I don't think it is that.
Unfortunately I use a Mac so many utilities are not for me. I can't use DFHack or Therapist or several others. So I can't pinpoint whats going on.
As an experiment I copied the map and let it run for a while.  Left on their own the Dwarves die in their sleep from lack of food.

Now it says "SLEEP" next to each one, and they are all sleeping their assigned beds.
The went to sleep, and just not woke up,.

AFter a run in with a megabeast I THOUGHT I was in the clear...
But about 3months latter I noticed large groups of Dwarves asleep.

At first I thought it was a coincidence, but after a bit more time, over 90% of the fort is now asleep, people are getting thirty and hungry, and I'm afraid going to start starving in their sleep. There is no sing of infection, wounds or other illness, just sleeping

Well, I know they are used, but usually full scale forts.

My idea is making a shaft stright down, and nothing else.

Just leaving tiny embar sized forts with shafts going in and out of the underground all over a map. Since they are saved as "forts" they are easier to track then caves.

I think the question thenm becomes, How..If at all.. could you "restar" history happening?

Since goblin forts, and by extension their leaders... Are not yet in adventure mode.. Is tehre any chance of genning the same world in an early version to explore this? Or to force mod in the seed to create a town? We really REALLY need to somehow embark on this site to bare witness to this monster.

Not sure if this has been hit on before, but while thinking about ways to exit the Underground, I remembered one of my abondoned forts was near by, and I could just go up it.

So THAT made me htink, "HEY! in fortress mode it's easy to dig a nice shaft all the way down to Magma really simply!" Soooooooo

The idea presents itself, Founding mass forts, building a shaft through all three layers, and then abondoning.

You make the fort last just long enough to do this task, should take less then 30min or so really and there you go!
Repeat on a mass scale, and soon, you have exits all over the world!

Really? I had never thought of that before.
So If I ship out hundreds of master work Wep and Armor, it will bolster Dwarvs world wide?

Grr wait... The king already is here, doesn't that end Dwarf Trade?

One would think that the easiest "fix' would be to have Dwarves carry any belongings with them. So your Warriors would leave clad in the best weps and Armor before going out into the wilds

But yeah, I can see this being a huge issue.  I guess it goes back to the concept we have had since adventuring started, that of the dream of your fort going on after you leave it, not being "Abondoned" but becoming an ongoign Dwarf settlement.

Didn't Toady say that was next to impossible to code or something?

I dont understand... how can you see more then one Z level in your world with lower ones grayed out.

I was wodnering that myself.
Also epic spawn, will downlaod when I get home from work.
