DF General Discussion / Re: Dwarf Fortess or Minecraft?
« on: November 28, 2010, 03:24:09 pm »
Does anyone here ponder how epic it would be if DF MERGED with Minecraft?
I mean, imagine the interactive 3D nature of the game mixed with a bout 200 or so dwarfs running around and doing crazy stuff :D

Because for me thats the big differance. I'll admit I like Minecraft for its visual aspect, being able to walk around in real time 3D adds a lot.  But the fact that its ONLY you in the game, or maybe 2 or 3 other people, makes it feel so... Empty...
Part of the draw of DF is its mixed with a game like "the sims" you have an army of people to control, command, work, etc.  Of course those exact reasons seem to turn others off to DF.  I know my brother LOVES minecraft but has never liked DF.

Is there anyway to utilize this as a "world map" visualizer into a DF visualizer?
Everyone is still trying to cobble together a new viz for DF and other then stonesense nothing has been finished.

I don't like stonesense because it can't zoom in and out and the isometric view gives it a very limited number of angles to view your fortress from, so I can't see as much of my fortress as I want to with it.

The newer version is supposed to give full screen shots up to 30 z levels.
But I can't get the new version to work :/

DF Modding / Re: Stonesense - Official thread

I swear I have the worst luck running DF utilities >:(

I downloaded the most recent version of Stonesense, put it in my DF folder, loaded a game, loaded Stonesense, and it just spins its gears while saying "Connecting to Dwarf Fortress" I mean I am running the most recent version, why do these things never work right?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Partial Skeletons

Won't you get a skull anyway if the head comes off and rots separately though?

No...

I have this bane in my fort as well. I have a mountain of partial skeletons, arms, heads, and they are useless.
They will NEVER turn into bones no mater HOW long you let them stay there.  The worst part about it is that because "intelligant" races arn't butchered, perfectly good goblin corpses will pile up as well.  No more goblin bone items or goblin totems.  I remember bones being an almost unlimited resource, now I have to ration what few bones I get these days.

Untill Toady changes this or someone makes a mod that alows them to decay, bones have become a rare thing in DF now.

I still can't get my Dwarfs training into an army. they only way the  get experience is by telling them to kill every critter that shows up on the map.  Personally I am going for immense Trap laden entrance to my fort.

The plump helmet, it looks like a leaf, A LEAF!!!

Is it just me or are all the 'vermin' tiles been replaced by tree tiles?
And most "tree" tiles seem replaced by Ore tiles, (the speckles and wavy ore tiles.)
And the ore tiles have been replaced by Bats!

Its madness I tell you, MADNESS!!!

I was thinking about that eariler.  A mod to either "process" the corpses into skeletons, or a mod that was able to let them properly 'decay' into usable bones.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How do you deal with "Muck"
« on: November 26, 2010, 01:40:41 pm »
For now taking apart and then rebuilding the bridge "cleaned" it in as far as all the muck dropped down into the river.  The part I am dealing with now is the walls are still covered in several pages of muck.

You know, I am all for realisim and such, but this is an instance where I wish things weren't THIS real.  Or at the least, I wish there was a way to "clean". I mean, if a Dwarf grabs a bucket, fills it with water, at the least he should be able to wash stuff from walls.

Which sucks over all as it makes getting bones MUCH harder.
I remember in 40, having mountains of goblin bones, orc bones, etc.  Now all of those bodies just rot because they can't be butchered.  I don't even care about the meat, but the fact that a "partial skelton" will NEVER become a pile of bones is a pain.  Is this something Toady is working on for future patches?

Well i'd have to arrange it in such a way as to dummpthe muck into the river, can you make a bridge that opens on the "side" instead of up? that would dump the muck over the edge instead of wither in the front of the fort or into the fort itself.

DF Gameplay Questions / How do you deal with "Muck"
« on: November 24, 2010, 10:06:40 pm »
After finally building a "self cleaning system" that consisted of a waterfall that went over the entrance to my fort, I thought my days of Dwarfs covered in muck were over.
To an extent this worked, all my Dwarfs are clean and covered in water.  Bytr the bridge that the water flows through...

There are tiles with over 3 pages of "a splattering of so and so's blood" and mud and dirt and muck.  How the hell do a scrap it off the bridge and down into the river below?

which is a serious pain when you have over a dozen "partial skeletons" of trolls, elk birds, troglodytes and more...and it's all USELESS
