It's the penguin Tawa, it's hard to take a penguin seriously unless it is a wizard, has killed somebody, has some sort of weapon, is cool, or has done something awesome.

((No offense to our resident penguins of course, you all have done something sufficiently awesome from what I have seen I think.))

I must admit, I'm looking forward to the day I can get a 4k monitor, it's been too long since we've had worthwhile DPI.

I used to use a 1600x1200 resolution 19" CRT (most likely 18" viewable), which is ~111 dpi. My current work monitor is a 27" 1080p LCD, which is only ~81 dpi (and actually fewer vertical pixels, and only 8% more pixels in total).

Free/G -sync is another beautiful thing, but why no-one thought of it during the CRT era (when the graphics card *did* control the monitor refresh rate) I have no idea.
They didn't worry about it much back then cause CRT always had manual control over the Refresh rate plus i doubt people worry much about Doom 2 running 60fps

They are cheap quality, my old one the front panel broke when i tried to remove it first time, the window was easily scratched and didn't had much room for cable management, paint scratches off like nothing. I go for a Corsair or a Cooler Master case.

How about a Cooler Master Elite 431 Plus, or Corsair SPEC-02?
Both are great brands I lean with the Cooler Master for the rebate but those are good enough. Just be forewarned those glass windows scratch easily so don't lay the computers down on that side.

That said, there are numerous third-party programs (e.g. Stardock Start8 that put a real start menu back.
I'd personally recommend Classic Shell. It's completely free, unlike Stardock, and highly configurable. You can even have the old XP-style start menu.
Its a 5 dollar software with a UI design matching Metro, you aren't breaking the bank with it.

i5-4690k is the Devil's Canyon release so it has about the same OC capability as the old Sandy Bridges. Gigabyte GA-Z97X-SLI should be a good enough board.

Be aware of the tradeoffs with tablets, smaller you go the less processing power you have. I dunno if your dad complains with computer speed but even with the new Atom processors, combined with the lack of storage space and it can go downhill. Also check if he would be ok with the form factor, companies are still churning out netbooks so if the tablet is bust you can still get a decent netbook nowadays.

Reason why i picked the newer generation was the fact they come with TSX instruction support so for any type of heavily threaded software they can support it. the X79 Motherboard platform is aimed for enthusiasts and people with money to blow. It would be a waste to put in a quadcore and be a generation behind. You also go for a i5-4690K which is also the newest generation CPU just a 100 dollars cheaper.

Oh god Thermaltake cases, their fans are quiet but the cases are complete junk >__>

Netgear gigabit card is old and expensive, advised going with the cheaper PCIE compatible Intel NIC cards.

As for your CPU upgrade theres no point going to the extreme models if you are not going for a Hexacore cpu, advise staying with at most a i7-4790K with corresponding Z97 motherboard.

Seeing a corpse shouldn't give a -30 unless it was a colonist - surely looking at an attacker's body wouldn't be anywhere near as bad!
Apparently, people who are venturing out to the edges of colonized space weren't prepared for corpses!  It gets me that you can have an attack of 50 tribesmen, kill 49 of them, capture one, convert him, and suddenly he's REALLY upset about this one patch of dirt.
Being civilized has its downsides.

Isn't it also odd that the transfer student always comes in partway through class, when everyone is already sitting down and then gets assigned a seat? Does it actually happen like this in real life?
If they are late sure, usually though the teacher will have them stand in the front and introduce their self after morning greetings.

If you can find any evidence (e.g. a benchmark) of a "good" brand card having higher performance than a "bad" brand card (ignoring OC models) I'd love to see it!
Custom coolers by far are much better than the reference blowers. Check out the 290x at launch, the reference design choked on heat until manufacturers were able to build their double/triple fan coolers on the platform.
Manufacturers have free reign on the designs of the cards, AMD has reference specifications but they have allowed full range of custom work allowed like switching out components for higher grade materials, different PCB bases so you can get more space or fit into a ITX build. AMD will never officially support OCing their products but that doesn't mean the manufacturers cannot market to that group of people.

Performance-wise theres really not much of a difference with fancier parts but instead you have increased reliability. You can safely push OCs at a higher speed without burning out the card or withstand being in a hot environment for a long time. Including that can also be a manufacturer's warranty, ones that trust in their products can even slap on a 5+ year warranty on their products. Its the same with motherboards, Intel and AMD provides the controller chips, everything else is free reign.

For my experience, i equipped an office with a mix of EVGA and ZOTAC nvidia cards. The ZOTACs had a higher rate of failure due to the shitty fans they used so i bought more of the EVGAs.

I dunno, pirate mode seemed alot more fun than linear assassin dude.

*coughs vaguely* Solutions exist! Well, I guess you could try customer support or something. Or get ye' a map.

Even with the fabrication issues, AMD pushed in Vishera with Piledriver which did fix up some of the pipeline issues but still couldn't match 32nm Sandy and their final answer was releasing those ridiculous FX-9000s that pushed their clocks upto 5Ghz with a 200w+ TDP, my brother had a 8320 and that was a space heater in his room.

For Kaveri, the 28nm fab is not core efficient. Yes the density increased but the tradeoff was that AMD kept the TDPs down, they couldn't cram another computation unit to boost the GPU or increase the clock speeds over from Richland. At least they pushed their memory controllers to run at high clocks so the GPU didn't choked much from the memory bottleneck.
Honestly, I can't wait for a Kaveri laptop, AMD can definitely kill if they can get some manufacturers behind them. It may not match up against a full i7 and dedicated graphics but definitely cheaper for the inbetween as i don't want the stupid gutted ULVs or the pricey full processors+dedicated graphics.

Ever since Intel jumped to 22nm OCing spits out alot more heat and didn't help that they used a cheap TPM that made it very hard to push over 4GHz with the Ivys and Haswell (Devils Canyon doesn't count cause it was catered to the OC people). With Broadwell and the future Intel is just going to continue working on the graphics and small improvements. AMD will continue with the APU for the graphics and security along with hopefully a vastly better architecture reveal for next year.
