Tantrum spiral will be hard to get out of.. maybe abandon then reclaim if you like your fort?

- Ambushing goblins

Any effective method of detecting them a long range/safe distance? Chained animals have minimal range and are basically one-use..

I recall seeing something like taht on the forums recently.. a dragon can be an ennemy of a specific faction; so chances are that the humans are of that team and they are "at war" with the dragon.. take a look in his profile.

In the story a tamed dragon attacked a king, because he was of X faction, and the dragon hated that team.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Caravans

while on topic..

How can i make sure i get a massive amount of wood in a caravan? Do i only select it at full priority and nothing else? Is the caravan still going to show up with large number of wagons if i do that?

Never tried it (since i always need a bunch of everything to keep my fortress alive, im in a treeless map).. with dwarves when i usually trade with them i get only 4 logs and a ton of unwanted super-costly stuff.

.. tantrum spiral? Boredom-induced berserk rage? Peasants AFAIK dont behave differently than your average dwarf.

- theft

One of my artifact got stolen early in my game (by a kobold i guess, the thief was never seen), some triket of little value.. (and yet thieves must have some Money-Radar to have stolen this one item out of the dozens of other around it)
What i was wondering is, am i ever going to see it again? Or its just forever gone?

In my experience they sometimes already have titles when they arrive.

At worst; Save, tame, see what happens. If everything burns, Ctrl-alt-del.
Or put the cage inside a airtight room, with a chained kitty in a corner, link cage up to a lever. Tame, then pull the lever, if kitty lives its good news. Otherwise just keep the room sealed shut.

DF Suggestions / Re: Alarm system

Not needing to micro the guard should be an asset, not a hindrance. I think this could be accomplished with designated guard posts, patrol routes and battle stations. Alarm would make them ignore patrol routes and guard posts for the time being while they man the positions you designated. Designations should be based on weapon carried for simplicity's sake. You could tick out weapon classes you don't want on that particular stretch of land you're designating, for instance draw a line across the battlements and tick off all the melee weapons. Assigning individuals seems good on paper but gets iffy when you consider the need for replacements etc. The entire idea is to reduce micro beyond the initial designation

Regular troops wouldn't have access to any of this as to make up for the fact you can boss them around on a whim

Would need an option to disable sparring, as is you can't give them any good weapons since they'll kill everyone or waste all the ammo. A mess hall and separate meeting zones for the troops would really help managing morale

interesting. Basicaly; guards as automated sentries guided by triggers and such, while we manually control our soldiers. I like.

DF Suggestions / Re: Nursery
« on: February 20, 2009, 10:26:07 am »
Well, since we're on this topic, one of the new Nobles I suggested in another thread was the Majordomo, and one of the Majordomo's jobs would be to look after any royal kids that came along.

So maybe not a physical, static, designated "nursery", per se, but perhaps there could be a group of dwarfs who's job it was to protect and instruct the younglings.

Maybe that role could be filled by the oldest and most experienced dwarfs in the Fortress?

i would see that as the philosopher's job.

well.. some random chained animals and wandering cats works very well for alarms, especially against kobolds in my experience.

It IS kind of preposterous that the military mothers carry their infants around, but I like it.  However, nurseries would certainly make sense for other races at least (i.e. humans and elves).  Perhaps you could create a nursery zone, kind of like a meeting area, in which people with the "Infant Care" labor would gather all the babies and try to prevent them from crawling away.  Or something.

And also, keep the kidnaping-prone kids locked up in there.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Champion guards

When one become a champ, you cant do much with them anymore.. except fight. They stick with their assignment (military, guard or royal)
For elites.. you cant return them to civilian life, but IIRC you can still switch them between royals, guards and military.

Keep the useless, crippled and brain-dead as royal guards.

As of now, i always tried to keep a captain and doing the mandates, but when the crazy-hard demands/mandates comes up, or the bans that cripple my exports... i really want to kill the nobles (or else they murder my dwarves!). That and they shamelessly steal countless valuable items.

Seriously, nobles.. They are all (except for the dungeon master) useless garbage.

For my guards and royals, they mostly serve as social-skills boosters, sparring partners, or sentries if i set a meeting point somewhere near an entrance.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Dumping clothing?
« on: February 18, 2009, 12:06:52 pm »
doesnt do any difference since all my military have fully-furnished rooms, thye just leave the clothes where they are dropped, foverer staying there, so they are cluttering the barracks, armor stockpiles and forges.
Same with collected items from nobles; juust my hammerer have about 30 narrow iron boots in her room, all on the floor.. yet she have two chests.

And flooding the place in magma to clean up isnt exactly my idea of "safe"..

same problem here too, the barrack is littered with clothes and so does the metalsmith forge (when they change equipment/clothes).. since they are "owned" items, they cant be dumped IIRC.
So i ask too; how to get rid of it?

-Traps

is there a way to prevent our braindead dwarves from jumping straight into a trap to clean it? The only way around it is to forbid access to the outside completely.. if the traps are outside..

edit--
 Megabeast count-

How do i see it? where? How many? I think its in the "legend" page, but it is a confusing and cluttered mess. Any tip?
