DF Gameplay Questions / So I need to churn out some trade goods
« on: April 11, 2010, 05:30:34 am »
I'm used to the old version where I could turn out food in my early fort that was worth a bunch of dwarfbucks. In the new version I need an alternative.

I seem to remember reading that there's a certain craft that's good for making to trade, I just can't remember what or why. possibly mugs? one of my first immigrants was a high master stonecrafter, so I can start cranking some stone goods out, I just don't know what I should make.

EditEdit: Either I'm retarded or he really loves the military life, out of a squad for 6 months and continues training. I think I'll get him up to legendary then give him his own squad.

and so Rasczak's Roughbeards were formed.

DF Gameplay Questions / Cow tug of war?
« on: April 11, 2010, 02:35:10 am »
so I'm running a fortress primarily on cheese and beef, it's going pretty well. I've run into a problem now though:

initially I had all my cows chained up right next to the farmer's workshops. worked fine.

now, i've got a ton of cows, so I dug out their own room a few levels down and moved all the restraints (and cows) down there.

the problem is, as soon as one of my milkers goes to get a cow from it's restraint to bring to the workshop, another dwarf intercepts them and begins dragging the cow back to its restraint, and they end up playing cow tug-of-war for eternity.

atm i'm just moving the farmer workshops into the same room, but is there anything i can do to stop this behavior?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Difficulty with Stairs
« on: April 10, 2010, 06:42:22 pm »
I have another question now though. It's small and only related to the stairs in the sense that the stair conflict caused it. In all that time I couldn't figure out how to fix the stairs someone who was trapped starved to death. I thought they would take this guy's remains outside to the refuse bile, or to be buried, but they didn't and now there is a miasma spreading through my fortress. It hasn't gone far yet. It's contained in a 3 block wide corridor. How do I get rid of it?

'miasma' is essentially just the smell of rot. it'll eventually go away on its own after the body finishes decaying. as for dumping the body, go to your orders menu, i think in the 'refuse' section and switch the setting from 'dwarves save corpses' to 'dwarves dump corpses'. for burying him, i'm not sure. i think if you build a coffin somewhere they'll put him in it but i haven't actually entombed a dwarf in quite awhile. the wiki probably has info on that.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Embark Options
« on: April 10, 2010, 04:58:46 pm »
I haven't felt restricted by the new embark points. just delete everything and then start adding what you want... really the only necessities (except those imposed by your location, like no trees) are an axe and a pick, maybe an anvil. the rest is up to you.

afaik lacking any kind of justice infrastructure, nothing happens when a mandate is failed except the noble who wanted it getting an unhappy thought.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: stockpile for cages?

it's rather unintuitive, but cages go in animal stockpiles, regardless of whether they're occupied or not.

personally, whenever it's possible, I prefer to dig stairs rather than construct them.

also, if you dig an up stair, and later want to turn it into an up/down, you can designate the same tile that the stair occupies to be dug as a down stair, and it'll turn it into an up/down, without having to remove the existing up and rebuild.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Random Berserking?
« on: April 10, 2010, 03:24:39 pm »
not sure if this is the case, but dwarves can go insane from being extremely unhappy. if he was already unhappy and then got injured, it might have been enough to cause him to go insane, and berserking is one of the four or so ways this manifests.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Trouble Brewing

huh, I never noticed anything like this in 40d. are you sure the other dwarves are actually taking the plants he's currently working with, and not simply cleaning out the still? brewing plump helmets for example leaves behind seeds, and the dwarves will come and haul those off to stockpiles. it could also be that they're collecting barrels of booze from previous batches.

is it causing any cancellation messages?

yeah I just tested this and you should be able to dig new up/up+down stairs right below the constructed ones.

Z+0, with constructed up/down stairs

Z-1, couldn't see anything on this level, but designated up stairs to be dug

Z-1 success!

try -digging- out an up (or up/down) stair below your existing stairs. you don't actually need to be able to 'see' that wall tile underground in order to dig there.

And I've found that my dwarves are less happy because every time they continue working past thirst and hunger they get a bad thought.

yeah this is kinda annoying too. they really aught to abandon a task just prior to getting a bad thought. or it could be in the Orders somewhere, like "dwarves cancel jobs to eat/drink/sleep" or "dwarves work even if hungry/sleepy/thirsty" so if you really needed to get a job done you could force them to work overtime, but the rest of the time you don't have to manually cancel jobs to keep them from starving themselves

I don't think this is confined to plants. I've noticed this behavior with cooking as well, I had a dwarf making cheese roasts and half the time he'd end up making 7 trips to the food stockpile because other dwarves would remove the cheese he was working with before he could cook.
