screw pumps are built on the rear or 'input' tile. the front/output tile of a pump acts as a wall. so they need to get to the floor just across that channel, and they can't. if you don't want to dig a more complicated series of tunnels, you can try building the pump tower from the top to bottom, using a gear assembly to 'anchor' the first pump.

so your top floor would look something like this:

P= pump exit tile
p= pump intake
G= gear assembly
and then build down from there.

however, i have a feeling the dumbass miners are going to channel themselves in while building this. usually when building a pump tower I have a separate staircase for access, so each floor looks like this: (flipped back and forth)

X= up/down staircase
W= built wall or door(because again the miners trap themselves when channeling)

there are no diggers. and yeah, currently, with a raised drawbridge and a channel around your fort you're completely (i think) invincible.

check if the archery range is set up so they can shoot from the direction that's indicated on the target (from the right, left, top etc)

do you have wooden/bone bolts? they wont practice with metal ones

the wiki only talks about the Armor User skill affecting a dwarf's ability to move around in armor. is this the only effect? (i.e. it doesn't affect their defense at all?)

Would be nice if they could work into this some sort of indicator of how far through the month you are. Like if it says your fort has stood for 4 years, 2.93 seasons, you would know it's getting pretty close to the new season.

err, maybe i'm misunderstanding the question but you can view the current date (month/day/year) on the z menu, upper right.

you can do this without any magma safe items at all (well, except no wooden magma pumps).

Mine was massive an intended for building a huge obsidian tower, but the principles are the same:

pump magma into the mold on the first floor
pump water into the mold on the second floor, which is floored with retracting bridges (much easier than tons of hatches), and the same shape as the magma mold (so there's no leftover water)
retract the bridges, bam. now just hollow out the obsidian via the second floor.

hmm, I haven't had any military dwarves really stand out much

So far my most badass dwarf would be the legendary miner of my current fort. I'm just starting out, he's been exploratory mining nonstop for maybe the first year, just barely hit legendary 1 in mining. then I hit the HFS (my first one). the pit, not the adamantine. a demon busts out damn near instantly and attacks my miner... who immediately pickaxes it in the chest, puncturing its lungs and heart, killing it, without a scratch on him.

Demon: RAOAWAR WHO HAS DISTURBED MY THOUSAND YEAR SLUMBER?! I WILL FEAST UPON YOUR SOUL
Urist McMine: F*$% THAT! *stab*
Demon: WAT? *dies*

as far as i know it's just random

[edit] also, make sure you have 'SHOW_ALL_HISTORY_IN_DWARF_MODE:YES] in your init, it makes things like 'the dwarves are surrounding the elf' in images talk about what they're pictures of

pumps -only- pump water up a level. or rather, they only take input from the level below them. like:
