screw pumps are built on the rear or 'input' tile. the front/output tile of a pump acts as a wall. so they need to get to the floor just across that channel, and they can't. if you don't want to dig a more complicated series of tunnels, you can try building the pump tower from the top to bottom, using a gear assembly to 'anchor' the first pump.
so your top floor would look something like this:
p= pump intake
G= gear assembly
and then build down from there.
however, i have a feeling the dumbass miners are going to channel themselves in while building this. usually when building a pump tower I have a separate staircase for access, so each floor looks like this: (flipped back and forth)
W= built wall or door(because again the miners trap themselves when channeling)
so your top floor would look something like this:
