DF Gameplay Questions / Re: I struck Adamantine, now what?!
« on: March 22, 2009, 01:17:11 am »
I have a vague suspicion that the amount of adamantine mined determines how fast the demons spawn after breaking open the chamber.  I haven't had many opportunities to test this, however.  But I normally end up digging up a lot of ady before opening the pits and I never have enough time to wall them up again.

I've only encountered the pits twice, but the first time i mined straight down through several layers of adamantine before i got to them andt he demons took their sweet time to show up. the other time i hit the pits from the bottom of the map without even touching the adamantine, and a demon spawned almost instantly. then my legendary miner stabbed it through the heart and lungs with a pickaxe :D

so this may not be the case :)

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Long and inconvinient breaks?

right not putting them into the military is the only way to stop a break-in-progress. you can't prevent them from taking them, although i mean it's like a day off every couple months. them's some hardworking dwarves.

although the broker always seems to decide it's time to finish the massive digging designation he was working on, have lunch, get a beer, go on break, then sleep whenever it's time to trade.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Magma Garbage Disposal
« on: March 21, 2009, 05:34:06 pm »
1. find a place where the magma pipe/pool sticks out further on one z level than it does on the one above it (or use the top level of the magma)

2. dig a 1-wide tunnel until it almost connects to magma, with 1 tile leaving it separated (and doesn't connect to your fort)

3. build a fortification at the magma end of the tunnel

4. go to the z level above the tunnel, and channel out the tile that seperates the magma from the tunnel

5. build a wall or floor to seal off the tile you just channeled

6. you now have a source of magma that's sealed off from the main magma pipe. magma can get past the fortification but creatures cannot (except minor vermin like fire snakes will occasionally spawn inside the tunnel, but they won't venture far so as long as it's not near any important stockpiles it shouldn't be a problem). dig another channel into the tunnel (on the safe side of the fortification) and designate a garbage dump on the floor around it.

a garbage dump zone needs to be designated on the tiles -adjacent- to a channel/pit, and dwarves will throw garbage into the open space. you can go into the global orders for refuse (o->r) and set which kinds of refuse (if any) you want your dwarves to keep in refuse stockpiles, and which will get automatically marked for dumping.

blocks are worth 5x the material they're made out of. also constructions built out of them will not be called "rough".

it's traditional to put a spoiler warning in your title, i guess some people want to be suprised by the HFS (hidden fun stuff)

I just struck adamantine, no signs of HFS yet or demons. I'm with my 7 founding setllers and its my first year... I don't have any weapons but a steel battle axe. I know enough about the demons and so I guess I'm pretty doomned if they show up. What to do? And what if they don't show.. How can I process adamantine

http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Adamantite#Processing

the demons are in a pit under all the adamantine (adamantine veins span multiple z levels), if you don't break into it, they won't get out (and if you do accidentally you might be okay if you re-wall it immediately)

I know you said you set them not to have bucklers, but check their inventories, sometimes they'll end up with a piece of armor they pulled of an opponent in one of their hands (sometimes this can be hard to spot, for example they're wearing a right glove and -holding- a right glove, and it's quite easy to scroll past 'blahblah right glove - right hand' and not notice that there are two).

or for the quick way, just set them to equip no armor/shields/weapons whatsoever, wait for them to drop everything (and watch your idle dwarves swarm them to take it all to stockpiles heh), and re-equip them.

if that doesn't work, it may in fact be bugged (or more bugged than the holding-armor one), because normally a dwarf with a crossbow will never spar.

definately much less efficient than most of these, but does give individual dwarves nice rooms.

I might be really stupid but you didn't make 3 different horizontal axels like this right?

It has to be 1 axle pointing in the right direction like this

what he said.

Quote
none of the horizontal axles
when you go to lay down a horizontal axle, you choose whether it goes north/south, or east/west, and how long it is. it sounds like you built several east/west axles instead of one long north/south. East/West axles will only transfer power from/to one of those two directions, same with north/south

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: A few beginner questions

I suppose my next question would be... how serious is the framerate problem gonna get? So far I have no problems at all, and run a fairly recently made gaming rig (about a year old now, was high grade when it was built) but I've been seeing a LOT of talk about framerate hits, etc... doesn't seem like a particularly graphically intensive game, so I'm wondering if the framerate is only a problem on older machines or if even the most modern of gaming rigs is gonna be brought to its knees by the insistent labors of the dwarves?

graphics are not the issue with framerate, in fact 'framerate' in DF isn't referring to FPS as with most other games. framerate in DF is the speed at which the game plays (As in how fast time passes/dwarves do stuff). lower framerate = dwarves slow down. the major limiting factor in this is processor speed and has little to do with the graphical capabilities of your machine. The major thing that makes DF a resource hog is dwarven pathfinding, as in them figuring out how they're going to move from where they are to their next destination. many dwarves doing this at once gobbles up CPU like nobody's business. that being said, a newer system like yours will probably not have signifigant issues with slowdowns until you get well over 100 dwarves (or dwarves + lots of animals), and even then there are ways to speed things up

Oh, it's not the heat? Huh.

Well, regardless, you need coal with or without having magma.
yeah, the oddity is that regular forges don't need a second piece of coke to use as fuel (somehow the 1 does double duty)

This is news to me.

I've always clumped all my levers into a "control room" near my main meeting hall and had to try to lay down color-coded floor tiles or furniture nearby to help me remember what that lever was supposed to do.

yeah, generally I keep all my levers (that aren't right next to the thing they control) around the edges of a single room, and have them 'pointing' towards the thing they're connected to.

yeah, they'll only start growing once you officially discover the underground river. a surface river that happens to go through a hillside or anything like that doesn't count. underground rivers can also be very hard to find
