I stand corrected.....how the hell did you find those, I searched quite thoroughly before posting
I apologize I misquoted, I meant to reference
There's nothing here to discuss that is new or productive.   You're bringing up a subject that has been flat out rejected several times.   You want people's opinions; instead I have given you the facts.

My idea is unique from what I have searched for and that is a fact, and the point of my previous post.

Who knows, with more supposide open source this may be possible in the future with no co-operation from Tarn Adams.

I am sorry Capntastic, but to be fair they are quite old, and outdate my forum lurking by far.... this was my last 'original' (or so I thought) I planned on suggesting.

It is wholly unrealistic because Toady's stated that multiplayer of any sort isn't part of the game's plan.   It's not what the project is about in any way; and not every game needs to be multiplayer to be fun.

And the reason people might be ignoring this thread, as you say, is because this is one of dozens of threads about the same exact 'suggestion'.   There's nothing here to discuss that is new or productive.   You're bringing up a subject that has been flat out rejected several times.   You want people's opinions; instead I have given you the facts.

I disagree, people with no technical knowledge whatsoever, nor any concept of what DF is intended to be have suggested that some rich guy use up his resources to host a real-time server, usually with some references to how awesome games such as Runescape and World of Warcraft are...

I suggest a method for exchanging information in between Forts, how it is implemented is up to the user....  Currently we have the ability to exchange entire forts, which players have used to create Succession Games.  I propose the ability to exchange selected parts of fortresses and append different peices of 'fort' together to make a unique fort, such as Fort 1 adds its dwarves to Fort 2 as hostiles

Aren't successions games a form of multiplayer?  And not much different than my idea?

This sounds fun, especially the sabotaging part  ;D, a living tree that can utilize wrestling grapples would definitely take the cake for most rediculously deadly organism.

Pre-1400's was not so primitive as to see war as the only answer.  Wasn't it a Roman who said "War is an extention of politics..." or something similar

EDIT:  Plus, as seiges get more difficult (or at least stop being a frickin joke) the sanctions and diplomacy will likely become a prefered alternative, I forsee elves becoming incredibly bad-ass somewhere in the future, as the projectile physics takes shape cross-bows will fall behind and  the elves will likely excell

*bump*

Sorry, but there are many more where that came from....imo this idea is huge, even if it is bad it would still be revolutionary while still plausible.

Please, post your opinion, I don't mind if you say outfront that the idea absolutely sucks or is too unrealistic, that would be a thousand times better than simply ignoring this thread....

Actually, I think this is an amazing idea. I just wouldnt use it the way it seems to be intended.

I'm imagining having fun with another person by making modded super cheaty forts, putting together a huge goblin invading force, and then sending it to a friend who would be doing the same, and have it attack my normal fort (ignoring sending it to a friend, it would be cool just to create sieges that would attack your own fort! So I could even "email" it to myself :P)

I would imagine the "seige script" would simply be just a couple lines of text, so yeah seiging/cheating with your own forts is definitely possible, this would make exploitation far too easy, which can be good or bad dependant on your opinion.

@Puzzlemaker: please explain, I would like to get a rough copy out soon to show it off/ encourage brainstorming on more implementations with this, my crappy list can't possibly be all of the neat things people could do with inter-fort interactivity

Bump

All my topics end the same way, I defend one of my points and it just dies off...soooo

obviously things like a dwarf or a list of caravan goods can not be that much information, the embark_profiles describes much of the dwarf in a rather succinct format.  So does anybody with more technical knowledge than I do know how probabal this is with DF in its current state?  I was guess there are some hardcoded obsticals, but I doubt anything that can't be fixed with a little co-operation with Tarn Adams

In addition, why doesn't anybody have anything to say?  I am not some World of warcraft fruitcake who thinks that all entertainment must come over the internet.

I have only been able to come up with a couple applications, but I am positive that others will come up with more

So far I have suggested:
Dwarven Fortress "battleship" where two or more forts take turns sending dwarven armies at each other (with the next update I believe the dwarves will be given orders other than total anihilation

Uploading Dwarven import/export/activity statistics into a fort @ embark to create a simulated economy (interaction would only consist of the uploading

Caravan sponsorship- Sending other fortresses items that which are traded with the current caravan script, you might also want to send an escort to prevent easy seizures

Send diplomats that deliver demands such as one fort taxing another or a declaration of revolt where one subjegated Fort rejects previously accepted contracts

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: "Unfortunate Accident" Devices

The force of the water shoves them into the door hard enough to injure them, I admit it is hard to throw all the switches fast enough to keep him from drowning, especially when your designated Thrower-of-switches decides to take a break or have some lunch

I can't find anything similar so.......pendulum

sorry for the necro by the way, a pendulum would be so crucial, similar to the above it could act as a switch that activated every few seconds, it would have to be powered

I always have used a water channel linked to a resevoir to repetedly beat my dwarves against their room door, bonus points for striking him down instead of drowning

I use it more for my permanantly crippled vets than nobles, I is da evil  ;D

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Eccentric player behaviors
« on: October 05, 2009, 08:54:46 pm »
I always make my fortress based around a spirling caravan pathway (7x7 needed to turn) which means that I build from the ground up and I remove my ability to lock invaders above ground, (maybe not so bad)

Notice it just says "B12....anything to do with"  ;)  I suggested that information such as caravans, dwarven squads, nobles, ect. be coded and emailed to others, similar to the way maps are seeded http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=42874.0

Isn't any established currency usually made of a material that is in fact useless?  For example, wooden beads, shells, specific stones, lead, paper

Of course those damned spanish had to create the golden Bullion, but you get the point

In no way is this similar to a real time MMORPG, this is no different than the seeded maps, it is simply on a smaller scale.  If this were to ever take shape it would work like the succession games do now, organized in-forum without Tarn Adam's supervision or consent (well I guess he could put an end to if he wanted to).

1. Hacking. Some people enjoy screwing up the game experience for all the other players.

This would be a non issue, I personally would back up any fort before I insert information into the game, note that everything is with consent, I could refuse to insert a competitor's information and then even lie about it in the forums, but what would be the point, it is just a friendly, untracked game.
