Life Advice / Re: How much are my old NES games worth?

Either Super Mario Bros or Super Mario Bros 2 had the most missing/destroyed units out of any game in history, and it still was a huge success like everything Nintendo does (how do they do it?)

You can certainly get a large return on things like signed baseball card or other sports memoribillia (sp), and you must have all heard of coins going for thousands of dollars in auctions, but you probably have better chances winning the lottery

Good point Muz.... investments in NES videogames are very likely to have a very slow rate of return and even the risk of damaging the antique games, especially through unpreventable data corruption.  You would get a better deal from your bank's CD accounts.

IHate, as you may have guessed I am inexperienced, but my advice would be to pick apart and study open-source programs, that is what I did with python (kinda), who knows you may even end up vastly improving the program.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Why is it free?
« on: September 19, 2009, 01:40:27 am »
why is it free?

lots and lots of testers who do the work for free.

we basically find bugs and provide feedback at no charge
A lot of games of about this caliber are free.  There are, at this point, more muds and mud codebases than you can shake a stick at, mostly free.

Multi-user dungeon games are afaik made by teams and are made all at once and possibly never updated, the number of inactive/deleted MUD huds on a program such a fire-client far outnumber the serviceable onces.

Anyways my point was Toady could probably work as a programmer or even software engineer (don't know his background) in a company and get paid big bucks.  Instead, he does what he likes to do (I would think) and relies on donations, which I admire and respect.

P.S. If Tarn Adam's sole source of income is Dwarf Fortress than it is a no brainer why he would keep the DF source code secret.

Regardless, I doubt he is making the same kind of money he could in a "normal" job (P.S. the [ quote] [unquote] were for emphasis beyond normal quotes, I didn't want to be offensive).

EDIT: Forgot to preview and mock code accidently got read

Some major programs scripted with python are kind of making me think of reverting back for a while, however Python is only used in entertainment from what I have seen (Civilization series, EVE Online, newest line of EA free PC multiplayer games, Battlefield Heroes being most promenent)  Of course I am only a hobbiest, I don't need to know the career-recomended language.

Anyways, my question was not what language to take, but if any programmer out there could tell me if I can learn on my own or if I need formal instruction?

Life Advice / Learning C
« on: September 17, 2009, 06:06:24 pm »
I have been interested in learning a programming language for a very long time, I have studied Python (script-based language), but I am more interested in the more usefull/powerfull/universal C and C++ languages.  I know many DF gamers and Bay 12 Forum-goers are professional programmers/software engineers, so how would I go about learning C++?  Individual study is pretty hard and the resources I can find on the internet and in the library are pretty scare and many are incredibly technical.  Should I just wise up and take a course?

I agree with Hippoman, however.....

a retro-ish game retailer in my area (Phoenix Games) sells some games for around $60 (Metal Gear), it is possible it was unopened, but I am not sure, then again you couldn't expect more than $20 if you tried to sell them the exact same unoppened game :_(

DF Suggestions / Re: Different Government styles?

Sounds cool, what would happen after the revolt?  A french-revolution-esque reign of terror in which nobles are hunted and cut down?  Followed by anarchy (actually same as before but without nobles)?  Would you create a new nation, vote in a new king?

Dwarf Fortress is still in production and already has a comicstrip/fansite?

To be clear, I was talking about whether arrows would pass vertically thru bars and grates, not that they defend against arrows.  That's the question as asked.

Bars and grates provide no defense.

I know....but reading the discussion gave me the whole idea, I am pretty sure that dark age castles had similar "kill holes"
