But that would be no more than a placemarker wouldn't it...

Why bother until late into the production of version 1

Alright, fair enough..... I now have a new appreciation for Tarn Adams, working on a solo-indie project that is supported by unreliable donations must take a lot of determination.  I have strong doubts I could dedicate so much to a project such as this, especially if I had the experience to take another better-paid route.

With the game's current mechanics, it seems like no matter what kind of government you implemented, it wouldn't matter. In the end you make all of the executive decisions for your dwarves, and the nobles really only implement annoying mandates.

I could only imagine something like this FAR into the future, a whole voting process would involve a dwarf actually having to "think".

Grates, yes. Fort'ns, no.

That's how they're designed.  Bars too, both vertical and horizontal.

Learn something new everyday, that is pretty fricken awesome, I am going to have to try that, in fact that might even be yet another unbeatable defence, have a military level above or below an area of a fort and build grates to turn your entrance hall into a marksdwarf's playground, the very idea is pretty cool.

I (a non-donor, sorry) was wondering why this whole project piggie-backs on the paying donors, yet is played by mostly non-donors, that doesn't seem right, why is DF free?  Or at the very-least, why is it free of advertisement, both the forum and the game-client.  It is my understanding that the game pulls in $1000-$3000 a month (maybe?) but considering the fact that this is Tarn Adam's full time job (maybe?) but-(as little as I know about donation-income)-but isn't that both insecure and pretty darned near close to minimum wage?

I know nothing of Tarn Adams's background, but couldn't he be making a lot more with a

normal[unquote] job?

In short, afaik Tarn Adams is shorting himself to do something he likes (perfectly fine, even advised) but why doesn't he make use of advertisement, or even a retail version in order to make up the difference?

The principal dwarven vices seem to be throwing things, fistfighting, breaking stuff, and being friends with the guy I just accidentally squashed.

However druggies in our culture get nowheres, fistfighting and breaking stuff can be very important skills that Dwarves likely put on their resumes :)

My understanding of democracy is that it doesn't require universal sufferage...  In fact, in my bitter old age, I'm starting to doubt the efficacy of universal sufferage.

True that  ;D  Honestly, all that hard work for women's suffrage, black's suffrage, and nobody votes, and/or votes unintelligently, simply picking the party of their father or mother.

Athens was a true democracy because all of its voting citizens voted directly for their candidate, everybody was required to vote and there were no representatives.  US is a representative democracy.  There is my rant.

Now...Although different governments would be cool, there is a problem, like I mentioned in my thread on government, the current system is a placeholder, the nobles don't actually "do" anything important.  The dwarves themselves don't differentiate between noble and non-noble, skilled crafter and lowly peon.  Dwarven culture is 100% equal and unbiased, all nobles are figureheads and you (meaning the player) are the totalitarian boss.  If you decide that everybody must be drafted and jump into some magma, they will do so willingly.

In short... DF would be better off as a "god game" rather than sim city meets Rome Total War

Parkour in a pitch-black underground cavern sounds pretty suicidal to me as well.

Maybe dwarves have such calloused hands they can climb walls like spider-man?  ;)

or

Dwarven beards are so coarse and rough that it can hold the dwarf suspended in midair as long as it is attached to a rough surface.

Christ!  Just because they eat once a month and organize a party once a season you have got to get so upset?   ;D

Honnestly, although the breaks are long, they are sparce unless the dwarf has a personality flaw, my dwarves spend the vast majority of their time either in a workshop or hauling.

In order for something to be a vice it has to be frowned upon by their society, and, well......dwarves are pretty amoral beings.  Besides working 98% of your life is virtuous enough to make up for any kitten mishaps

Here is where I got my inspiration, I was digging out my fortress when I came across valuable ore, so I dug it out and was left with a severly lopsided central traffic shaft.  I got to thinking wouldn't it be great if I could rebuild a wall that matches the rest of the shaft and then the carved out space would disapear? (but not fill in of course)

I would conjure up an ASCII diagram but I am not a magician, I would use a third party movie maker but I am  too lazy  :D

P.S. by traffic shaft I mean a centrally located room that is filled with staircases and empty space to increase the ease of transporting large groups of dwarves and resources up, down, and around each z-level.

The government itself is pretty much an aristocracy.

However...
Dwarven society as a whole is basically a dysfunctional Borg-type... thing.

hehe, -typethingy is the greatest suffix ever, it is so useful  ;D

Serriously though, I should have renamed the title to Dwaven Society, it would have lessened the confusion...sorry

Query:  If mind-altering drugs don't exist and alcohol keeps Dwarves sober than what turns them into psuedo-pirate partiers?  Jeez do dwarves have any vice at all?

Could somebody explain why climbing is important for dwarves anyway?  They aren't the ones that need to climb up and into enemy fortresses (except adventure mode, but many of the arguments are related to fortress mode)

Plus if the goblins can climb on top of structures, then maybe floors can be destroyed by gobos but not walls.
