DF: proof that you can lead a horse to water, AND kick it in.

Of course nobles give you benefits.

They give you the benefit of an extra dwarf to kill. ;D

DF: 100% realistic!

I can confirm from experience that mass-dump-designating over cages does catch everything inside. Definitely easier than marking every individual narrow giant cave spider silk sock through the stocks screen.

I have a map with rhesus macaques, and I tend to just leave the clothes from dead goblins where they fell. The macaques clean up for me, and it keeps them busy so that they don't cause trouble.

1: Select creature (using V or the creature list).
2: Go to inventory by pressing i.
3: Scroll to and press enter on item you wish to dump.
4: Press d.
5: Press Spacebar.
6: Repeat steps 3 4 and 5 if needed.
7: ???
8: PROFIT!

Pretty handy for getting stuff off merchants for free.

Hi!

btw, 2040? Jesus christ.

It is actually not that bad. Being in a playful mood, I ran world gen till 2008, so the fortress started in 2009, so it is only the 31st year of the fortress. Right now, I am at 2051 :) :) :)

I didn't dare propose the missing text, but with the words actually hugging each other, the problem was really blatantly obvious to me.

Deathworks

Toady DOES think of everything eventually. The forum is just here so we can help him think of things sooner.

Yeesh.

I like the Twilight books, but i don't snap if someone says they don't like them.

NOW BACK ON TOPIC!

Alright, so I've got a tunnel taking water from the underground river, which then dumps it through my dining/meeting area.  Despite the fact that the water spreads out to un-fishable levels further on, for most of this tunnel it is 5/7-7/7 deep, and the fish swim around in this area no problem.  Over part of the tunnel I placed a pair of grated fishing areas.  I've got fishing zones over them both, and zone-only fishing turned on.  For some reason, when I look at the zones with "i," it says there are 0 valid fishing spots, despite the fact that there are cave fish swimming around right under the grate.

This isn't a vital issue, as I have enough food even without it, but I like keeping the dwarfs' diets are mixed as possible, and this also leaves me with two layabouts who I'd rather not have contributing to my idle count.

I added water wheels to that river just recently, could that be it? If not, anyone have any idea what's wrong?  :)

Try without a grate.

Or, have it so the zone is over a water AND floor tile.

Or both.

Not really a superweapon, but still.

If i'm on a fort with
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
and a brook/river, i'll build a bridge over a block of channels. i then dig the z-level under the bridge, and tunnel down to the
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
. When siegers or Elves (after i've traded with them) arrive, i pull a lever that raises the bridge and opens the floodgates keeping the water out of the
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
(and therefore keeping my framerate up), so they all get flushed down the
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
;D

I'm about to collapse several layers of mountain at the same time(a good 13 z-levels).

Does the resulting collapse expose any ores that were in those layers? Say there was a gold vein up there somewhere, am I going to find Gold Nuggets sandwiched between diorite?

13. Freaking. Z-levels.

Forget about the gold, will you still have a fort after all that?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Emptying the map of trees due to Archery
« on: February 21, 2009, 01:12:04 am »
There is no reason whatsoever to not do this.
Redundancy, for the case of some disaster killing your only male and leaving you without any.

completely preventable, even if it were possible. last  time i checked ninja assassins don't attack your fort to target your male livestock.

in fact you probably should do the following anyway:

1. find a dwarf who likes that type of animal
2. chain up the male in that dwarf's bedroom
3. ???
4. profit

Fix'd.

Channel out the area behind your archery targets, so when they hit the wall, they just fall down safely instead of shattering. Same with catapaults and AFAIK ballistae. Just remember to make a path to the area below so they can actually recover the bolts.

So

# - Wall
+ - Floor
. - Channel
X - Archery target

DF Suggestions / Re: Embarking Problems, and The Lack Of A "Back" Button
« on: February 17, 2009, 02:59:13 am »
Once your party decides to venture out and arrives at the spot, you can't just go "back," excluding divine intervention.

So make your divine intervention. Print screen. Save scum.

If I'm reading his post correctly, he's not getting THAT far. He wants the back button on the screen where you choose the skills of the dwarves and what to bring and whatnot.

Sorry if i'm mistaken about the thread, but if you're in the "Prepare for the journey carefully" screen, you can hit ESC and go back to the main menu.
