DF Suggestions / Re: Mythological creatures
« on: April 16, 2009, 04:06:47 pm »
I am not very interested in the consensus about mythological creatures, as far as I'm concerned Toady may invent all kinds of weird and marvelous beings and put them into the game. If he copies mythological creatures, interprets them, deforms them or invents his own I don't really see as a concern.

However it WOULD be nice to have creatures that don't rely on brute force all the time, so I support this thread in the hopes of it finding new (or old) and exciting, versatile ways to torment my dorfs.
Projectile vomiting perhaps. (yes that WAS a serious suggestion)

While working on the external decorations of Liontower, I had a goblin siege spring up while about a dozen of my dwarves were outside.  Figuring they were done for, I drafted them all, bunched them up together and waited for the raiding party.  Sure enough, the dwarves run and do battle, poor little recruits that they are

Then out of nowhere, one of the dorfs decides to run away from the battle.  He has no wounds at all!  So he runs, runs, runs, all around my fortress, to the opposite wall, back south towards the entrance, into the main corridor, and back to safety.

Meanwhile, the rest of the improvised squad gets completely slaughtered.

My fleeing dwarf was the only survivor of the onslaught.  He didn't need a drink or any sort of food.  I have no clue what pushed him to hightail it and do a lap around my fort.

I made a burial chamber just for him.

He might have been tired. In one of my recent sieges I sent out 2 champions and 1 swordsdwarf to fend off a goblin squad. Easy enough, right? Well turns out I missed a squad that came from the mountains. 1 champion is off doing whatever and the other 2 have to fight on their own, they obliterate the squad but they're a bit tired.
The champion who was doing whatever arrives, sees that there's no need to help out and takes a nap. The second goblin squad attacks him and cuts him to ribbons. So what happens? The swordsdwarf attacks the squad head on and kills 2 gobbos ... the surviving champion is weary and runs away, leaving her ally to die at the hands of goblins.

She didn't go to bed afterwards, not for some time .. so maybe your dorf was just weary from something. Like cutting trees, operating pumps, mining .. and wanted to go "on break" just that since he's a soldier his status doesn't say "on break" it merely says "soldier" and that was that.

I don't see why you're rewarding him though. I punished my champion by stripping her off her weapons, armor and shield and forcing her to duel a captured goblin hammerlord for her place in the fortress. She snapped his elbow and then snapped his neck.
She has been honorably re-assigned to my army!  ;D

Children are fun when they play with wild animals.

so you mean something similar to the mafia/gangster families? with alliances and blood fueds and whateverothercraptheydecidedtodo.

This actually seems fun. I have about 5 families in my (ridiculously fertile) fort with +10 members. A blood feud between two of them, an alliance between two others and such would be pretty cool. Repeat offenders that my guards have to throw in jail over and over ...

... of course while the current justice system is in place it would be pretty futile to allow these things. The hammerer would hammer every family involved into the ground and my fort would lose 25% of the population.

Guys. It doesn't have trap_avoid.

We've established this. However, megabeasts marked as "Resident" automatically avoid traps, just like local dwarves do.

... man something's wrong with me. I'm not paying attention AT ALL in this thread. I'll just leave you to your own device.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: About the artifact limit..
« on: April 15, 2009, 04:09:45 pm »
I thought the only limit was the fact that dwarves can't make more than one...
No, it's limited by a number of factors. This prevents statistically improbable events like all the initial seven all creating artifacts before migrants arrive, or near-constant mood occurrence. Although if you keep expanding, I'm not sure if there's a hard limit. On a large map you could probably get more.
Destroying artifacts that have been completed doesn't work, I don't think. But if you get a fey jeweler or something forbid all your items he'd want to use, then wall him in his shop. If he managed to start working, collapse something on him. It's definitely not the number of moods, but the number of artifacts.

... why would you kill the jeweler?
I rather fancy the beautiful, perfect diamond he fashioned me.

Along this lines, I'm wondering if it would be sound logic to lock possessed moods and dwarves you just KNOW are going to produce something useless?

I had this possessed migrant lye maker produce a 3000 dorfbux turtle shell gauntlet... the only thing he grabbed was a turtleshell and my heart sank a little thinking of the artifact steel warhammer with 12 items that could have been...

That doesn't sound impressive at all. What'd he do? Punch a hole in the shell and walk around "look at my gauntlet!" ?

far as I knew he was driven away by the carp

The moment "interrupted by carp" or the word "carp" itself appears ANYWHERE in your game it is best to seal off the entire area or send in dogs. Lots and lots of DOGS! This is code ORANGE gentlemen! CARP orange! To your battlestations!

This ... might seem like a stupid question but ...

How do you expect to mine the ores after flooding the cave?

I like the idea, it also raises the question of what happens to bodies outside of fortresses though.

The chasm creatures eat them and wreck their graves for fun the moment it becomes unguarded. 100% of the time.

What's being referred to as a "medusa" is actually a gorgon; Medusa is the name of a specific gorgon. 8)

That's awesome.

You .. should probably use a floodgate instead of a grate though. Y'know. Marksgoblins.. shooting the kitten to death.. Urist McLegendary landing on his face.. that sort of thing.

If lady luck exists, i want her babies. :D.

I am offended by this. What makes you think her grace would honor you with her offspring? Give tribute and thanks for what she has already granted you and don't ask or even THINK that you want more!
