DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Smoothing/Engraving Stone
« on: April 14, 2009, 09:05:28 pm »
It's funnier when the legendary engravers work. They depict scenes of history, of elves starving, gobbos being slain, dwarves drowning, dwarves creating masterpieces or battling eachother. Historical accounts most marvelous!

... whilst an apprentice will make an engraving of a dog.

I had a bug in which some dorfs of a squad ran around their OLD patrol route in spite of me telling them to cut that shit out.

What I did was I gave every affected dwarf his own 1-dorf-squad and deleted the patrol route .. because sure enough some of them refused to accept the patrol of their superior, somehow it only applied to him.

If this is a problem with patrol priority there might be something like that. Assign them all to their own squads, delete routes, undraft, have them hand away their stuff, re-draft, re-assign squads and try again.

Still no luck? Execute them all.

I once had a siege, that ended with the first ballista arrow i fired, it took out their leaders eye, leaving him unharmed apart from losing his left eye. He freaked and ran, everyone in the siege followed him.

You were sieged by only one squad?

If that fails, amputate her from the population. Stop the madness before it spreads - the needs of the many yada yada, blah blah blah.

The Many has grown to a massive size. It has wrapped itself around these two ships this fortress, preventing their separation. Their creation was my error. Their destruction shall be my delight.

DF Suggestions / Re: Different Mthodes to "bury" Dead
« on: April 14, 2009, 05:06:11 pm »
Your spelling aside I think this seems interesting.. I like the tantrum spirals and the difficulties they create however so I'm not sure I want them to feel good about themselves because they buried the bastard. If you put that kind of upside to it there should be a downside to.

How about if the dwarf DOESN'T get his burial the way he likes it.. it'd be awesome to have his ghost haunt the place. Not sure what the ghost would actually DO but ... I suppose it'd make noises creating "slept uneasily due to noise lately" and scare dorfs coming in to do other errands .. or flat out attack them.

Idunno. The whole "gold coins in eyes" thing open the door for graverobbers to visit your fortress doesn't it? That's awesome.

I am not talking about the amount of bolts in the quiver. I'm sure that is already going to be worked on.  I am talking about the fact that, when I send my shooters into the field, they start walking carrying the half-depleted stack of salmon bone bolts that they were just practicing with.  Ideally when set to active duty, the dwarf should drop their bone bolts, go and get metal bolts, and then report for duty.  Metal bolts are substantially more damaging, so if you've got them, you don't want your soldiers wasting time with shooting bone.

I think they do .. are supposed to anyway. It's about prioritising.

I ordered my champions into the field. They ran out, 5 legendary dwarves strong and awaited the gobbos who were laying siege ... then they flashed question marks and abandoned their post. I was like WHAT!?!? and checked them. Turns out they had forgotten to bring provitions so they went to get din-dins.
I'd prefered if they did this EARLIER but that's just the way dorfs work. Gotta tell 'em to hang around the stockpiles for a bit, let them prepare.

There's a chance he may one day wake up, and when he does he'll slowly make his way to the meeting area, passing out every 2 steps and spaming you with passing out messages, eventualy he may get to legendary in something and have the stats to overcome the pain.
In the end tho, its really much more merciful to set his bed outside for the next goblins eige to take care of, his mother would have wanted it that way.

See, this is the kind of thinking that comes from thinking of your Dorfs as means. Your Dorfs are means, they are ends in and of themselves. Crippled dorfs should be provided a comfortable living space until they go mad or die of old age, not exterminated like animals. This is an honest dorf peasant, not a thieving kobold or a horde of cats or a noble.

aaah.. the BEST sacrifice material!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Dwarven Drop Pods?

Look .. why not do this?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Link a lever to BOTH bridges. The kittens will thud against the ground and be stunned, since they are stunned they won't run away from the approaching gobbos. The dwarves will land on the kittens and be cushioned by them, alternately the gobbos might swarm the kittens and each dorf lands on like 2-4 gobbos. Huge advantage until the dwarves get killed easily for being stunned.

I don't know.

Maybe it's a little DIFFICULT to fire an arrow through three unaligned arrow holes?  That might be why only the legendary dude dit it. Replace most of the fortifications with trenches.

While I support being able to say "Only these dwarves smooth; only these dwarves engrave", I don't support giving the player control over what gets engraved. Encouraging dwarves to be less repetitive with their engravings is fine; saying "draw this on your walls" isn't.

I second this.

You seem pretty talented in the "cage" department. Use that.
