DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's with the brook lamprey?
« on: April 14, 2009, 09:24:53 am »
So my brother told me there's the off chance a cave spider will bite your forfs and paralyze them. Perhaps forever.

If it's true maybe the brook lamprey is a fish sort-of representant of dangerous vermin..? or something? I don't know.

No animals to hunt so I tell everyone to hunt - farmers, planters, brewers, fishers ... everyone who has hands carry spears.

That's how I run MY fortress anyway.

They do defend themselves but it might take a broken leg before they decide to do it. A farmer of mine found a goblin thief, the goblin cut him in the eyes and he fell over .. the goblin took advantage of this and severed his head before making a break for it. Thankfully he took too long and was caught and horribly mauled.

So only a few days later a SECOND farmer finds a goblin thief in roughly the same area. This time the farmer jabs a spear in the goblin (all miners farmers have spears) and runs away screaming. The goblin has a copper spear stuck in his upper body and a punctured heart .. that's bad, right? Well it died and everyone rejoiced.

My guess is that the goblin struck at the second farmer but missed, the farmer defended himself and that was that .. your marmot probably bit the woodcutter in the spine or something, incapacitating him immediately.
OR the woodcutter was taking a nap on the wrong side of town, that's pretty much a death warrant for even legendary dwarves.

How can you survive with only 50 dwarves? .. and if your merchants get killed off they oughta drop some nice equipment for you, right?
Stealing from the dead has saved my ass more than once.

Arrow towers.

Also what's with all the captured animals?

I need to look it up again, Think it had to do with giving the animal sever on breaks and some temperature tag.  Post an edit with the details soon.

Homeotherm 40000 and severonbreaks.  I never tried PLAN E myself it was more theory than the others.  Make sure to tell us how it goes.  I made some assumptions about the cages.  Cages seem to act like stasis chambers in most respects so I assume the cages will protect the animals from the temperature effects.  If it doesn't... well then that's just more "fun".

Sorry to bust your bubble but the cages don't protect.

I had a forest fire when merchants arrived with much needed supplies, the merchant, his pack mule and all the equipment burned to a crisp. I got the strange message "the horse has died of the heat" and went "what? I don't have any horse" .. upon later inspection one of the few things that survived the forest fire was a copper cage.
Inside of it? Horse bones.

DF Suggestions / Re: Auto Slaughter for kittens

Go up ramp, dump kittens into designated pit, fire ballista. Kittens die (you can kill HEAPS at the same time!) and your siege operator gets practice. Practice is important if you want him to be able to reload siege equipment and get more than one shot at gobbos.

That's the most horrible thing I've ever heard of.
Indeed. You said goblins instead of kittens in the last sentence.

Err... I think he meant gobbos. When you're shooting at immobile, defenseless kittens, it's better to do it slowly!

Yes ... yes I did.  ;D I meant you need to reload quickly when the gobbos come or they will scare away the operator before he gets off a second shot. Why fire into empty space when you can practice on kittens?

Over complicated? add "incredibly dangerous" and "high risk of failure" and I'll support this!

Hauling multiple items at once is a surprisingly difficult thing to do.

Yeah but SOCKS?

DF Suggestions / Just a little thread about OH GOD MY EYES!!!
« on: April 13, 2009, 08:39:36 pm »
So recently one of my marksdwarves got a goblin arrow stuck in her head. Minor brain damage, right eye gouged out.

She continued to fight. After the goblin squad was vanquished she just pulled the arrow out, threw it on the ground and joined her comrades in fighting a second squad... thing is after the battle I looked all around and I didn't find her eye. It wasn't on any arrow I found, it wasn't on the ground or in the "body parts" stock list.

So I assume gouged out dwarven eyes don't exist in the game. This has got to be corrected!

So, broken dorfs are likely to be completely useless. Into retirement the pit they go.
