They generally show up when you reach a certain fort size/worth...

I'm at 5 million dwarfbucks and the pop cap. No elven diplomat. Do I need a noble handy?

Seems I have the same problem ... pop cap is reached, can't get immigrants, can't get more nobles, can't get elven sieges.
Maybe this is why I'm not getting megabeasts or beakdogs or trolls either ... well there's only one thing to do.

What? modify the population cap so I get immigrants?
No no no of course not! I'm going to flood the ball room and the zoo, killing half the population.

try posting multiple dogs/cats/other animal around the edge of the map on chains as soon as an ambush comes the animals would see them

I did this... didn't work out as I had hoped since the goblins patrolled from chain to chain and butchered all the animals.

its more like seasonal thaws but yeah first time i usually play on a temperate map
and i don't have any magma/lava but i can try to freeze any goblins. any advice on how to make that trap?

do like I do. make it up as you go, fail horribly, lose dwarves, try again, cavein, lose dwarves, try again, workers are ambushed, trap is activated, malfunctions, goblins kill dwarves ... and then i get it to work so-so which is great. now i just need to forget to use it

Accidents should happen less to the more skilledfull.
O noes! your legendary armor smith just smashed his hand into a bloody pulp !!! and just when adamantine ore was discovered...
Although would be funny to have a tree fall on your fellow woodcutter or something  :D also I am seeing fingers in your dwarfs butchered meat supply  :-X
And your average dwarven skull should be enough for your miners ( except a full 7/7 block of stone)

Hey that's not a bad idea. I'd like to have a setting where I could toggle how cautious the dwarves are. As in they allow the MOST SKILLED dwarf go and build those war hammers the mayor wanted and not just whoever was on scene. A new weaponsmith walks into town, thinks he can help out, burns both his hands to a crisp... rather it'd be "hey Urist McWeaponsmith step back and let the city weaponsmith take care of it instead" and he could like, do things that are LESS dangerous only... assuming that no dwarf with a higher "skill" is present that is.

I'm pretty sure this is already in the new version.  At the very least, I know they can have different eye colors.

Can't wait to see it.  ;D

Cat bones? Lying around?

I make bolts out of all mine. I imagine the process is quite simple.

1. Load cat bone into crossbow.
2. Fire at target.
3. Laugh.
4. Drink.
5. Repeat until you're out of bones.

My brooker is also my hoardmaster. He spends all his time making sure that all accounts are accurate or sometimes tend to the wounded. That's all he does.
It takes alot of his time. In fact it takes up ALL of his time but what's a dwarf more or less? The nobles and admin live in the same place anyway. Dining halls, rooms and offices gathered around a nice well.

There's really no need to keep track of him. If he decides to take a nap instead of trade I simply replace him for the time being.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / The dwarven diet
« on: April 06, 2009, 09:22:43 am »
So what do your dwarves eat?

I look through my stocks and I find that most of my meals sound ... disgusting. They are basically: Biscuits made out of cat, biscuits made out of seeds, roasted berries and roasted seeds.

No wonder they drink such large quantities of sewer brew.

I can get behind this. I think accidents should be related to ALL jobs.

Woodcutters can hurt themselves extremely, fisherdwarves fall into water, miners have rocks fall on their heads (they should automatically equip helmets if you ask me), children fall over and bruise, haulers hurt all over, nurses... prick themselves..? i don't know man. Maybe not EVERY job. It'd be annoying to have my trader lie in bed due to carpal tunnel syndrome.

I fire ballistas at them every time they show themselves ... so far they tolerate me and accept it as accidents. I even trapped an entire party of elves and starved them to death once.

Tolerant bastards.

You're missing the point. Those "stone" swords aren't just flint or granite with a handle on, they're OBSIDIAN for crying out loud! also they refuse to make wooden swords. they just buy them from elves sometimes and use them when there's nothing else.
Wooden and bone bolts are used for practice.

In all honesty if a dwarf had access to a sniper rifle it is all well and good to practice aim and shoot cans or target dummies with. However if goblins attack no self-respecting dwarf would use a sniper rifle, they would use an inefficient and innacurate steam-powered catapult which throws flaming kegs of way too tightly packed and unstable gunpowder.
Bonus points if the construction originally was a drawbridge and you're drunk at the time. Now THAT'S dwarven!

I just thought of something.

To have multitile creatures would mean that ballista and catapult defenses would be not entirely worthless over-powered against them as they're easier to hit!

DF Suggestions / Re: Nobles (make them more than a target for murder)
« on: April 05, 2009, 11:40:23 pm »
i have never seen a reasonable noble except for my first mayor, he was a good dwarf armok rest his soul
maybe your worldgen went better than i could hope for that culled all the bad nobles in civil war but mine were mostly greedy bearded bastards.

well.. the mayor is a little annoying.
"make me warhammers!" and i make warhammers. "make me iron warhammers!" and i make iron warhammers. "make me something else made out of iron!" and i go do you ever shut up? and i make iron coins. "I FORBID YOU TO EXPORT THIS!" well what am i supposed to do with it then?? my military don't use hammers they use maces! they don't use iron they use steel!
so i mostly ignore her now
