Thanks for the responses, figuring out what the stuff was that was causing it was the hard part. It appears that the Elves decided to leave via the third cavern layer, which I hadn't even opened up yet, they found a downward passage, and it was there they met their end. They had a load of stonecrafts I had traded them and figuring out which ones they have has been a tedious chore.

 I was about to suggest something along these lines because a similar thing happened to me. Dwarves were spamming because they were looking for spears. I had killed a bunch of lizardmen in the caverns and unforbidden all the spears in the stocks list. Turns out that another group of lizardmen had been attacked by an FB and slain in an uncharted area of that same cavern layer.
 It was driving me nuts!

If I remember correctly, if you have any free tiles around your depot, if you build a cage that has a creature in it next to the depot, then just dismantle the cage, it should then be in the depots trade screen. I've done it with gobs and creaturemen, but I don't remember getting much for them.

 OH REALLY? I must experiment with this!

I usually don't make death machines, I prefer to rely on dwarven muscle and dwarven steel to fend off invaders.

 I do build things to punish my dwarves though. Dwarven law might not have anything to say about Urist McBroker deciding not to work ... but I sure have something to say about it! and I say Urist McBroker goes into the spear room! He will recieve X stabbings before he is allowed to come out. With X depending on my mood.

 Other than that I come up with constructions like a miasma chamber, which is basically two sealed-off rooms connected by a fortification or grate. Room 1 holds the prisoner and room 2 holds food. The food will rot and spread miasma through both the rooms.
 The chamber will also contain a well so that Urist McCriminal has the ability to drink - and will end up starving to death. All the while choking on miasma from the constantly-refilled rot room ... and if he can't take it he is welcome to kill himself by jumping into the well.

Build a maze.

Sounds easy? It isn't. Dwarves know the pathway out of the maze instinctly ... the only way to confuse them and keep them inside... is to make an automated and continually changing and HUGE maze. Disappearing floors and walls, opening and closing grates, traps, unleashed monsters, trap doors into water (drowning dwarves will prefer to path into a dead end than stay and die I think) ... this sort of thing would be very complex and take a long time to make. I might not employ all 120 of them but it will sure keep YOU busy!

I don't know how he died but he hovered several Z levels above ground .. just outside the gem window of an appartment... this struck me as very creepy for some raisin.

When playing a serious game and not building forts for the purpose of !!science!! I never have this problem.

Know why? It's because all migrants are viewed in detail and those that have no real place in the society are simply told to do carpentry, masonry, hauling and stone detailing.

 This way I always have DOZENS of untrained hands working on my projects. If I decide I want a tower erected there will immediately be dwarves swarming all over the construction site! The foundation will be up in no time at all!
 If I dig for gems or metals or just stone there will be haulers waiting for every single rock that's picked from the wall! and around the stone stockpile 10+ masonry workshops will be churning out stone blocks 24/7.

 The legions of mindless hauler/builder-drones are the very essence of the fortress!

Okay. The son has become a child and a new daughter has been born... and I think this little experiment is over.

It's a bit Messy so let's put it like this:
 Daddy Muthkat immigrated with his two daughters. Their mother is unknown (ungenned). So he has no relation to her. Instead he married Tirist and had two children with her. In his eyes there is a wife and 4 children. Happy family of 6. Easy as that.
 Mommy Tirist fell in love with Muthkat and, after isolation, became friends with his two daughters. She figures they are his and doesn't adopt any mothership role. She only considers the ones that passed through her body as her children. Her relationscreen even states "only son" and "only daughter"
 The children are: Avuz & Logem (immigrants) and Tekkud (male) & Meng. Avuz & Logem don't take any notice of eachother or their real (non-existant) mother and move around like normal dwarves. They don't take any notice of neither Tekkud nor Meng either.
 Tekkuk & Meng are happy in, what they consider to be, their family of four. They don't acknowledge the immigrant girls .. and don't seem to build any new relation with them.

 Since the fortress-borne ones hang around Mommy Tirist all the time and the outsider girls prefer to stay in their own rooms .. the kids don't interact that much.
 I put the girls' beds into the master bedroom, to make the children speak to eachother and spark up a friendship. So far there has not been any change in their relations, despite them hanging out all day. I don't think there'll ever be dwarven incest.. because it seems the girls are indeed siblings to the fortress-borne and cannot make new connections, it's just that they're ... bugged. and thus they don't understand family values.

edit: Oh god. I read my post and it sounds like I consider incest to be normal family values.

Alright! Their first child has been born. It is a baby boy!

The girls are NOT acknowledging the baby as their brother. I'm going to let him grow up a bit and see if they can become acquainted with him.. and IF they can, then I'm going to isolate them, let them grow up and try to make them marry eachother.

Finally They married!



The other dwarves in the fort have also been reproducing so since I want to see more children from these two I have begun herding rival children into a small room where they will starve to death.

There has been no relationship change between the children and the step-mother. They are "long-term acquaintance" and "passing acquaintance".

Seems about right. Who gets along with their step-mom anyway?
