I don't know. Maybe.

That's one interpretation of what Toady said. "Sibling migrants don't track relationships properly." .. god I wish they would marry already.
There's a siege outside the fort and everyone's locked indoors.

I've begun butchering dogs and cooking seeds to keep everyone fed.

Wait, damn. If it had been a son and daughter, more experimentation ahoy.

Are you implying incest?

That would of been impossible. The girls aren't acknowledging eachother at all. You know how the siblings get the "younger brother / older sister" or whatever relation? It cannot be changed. The bugged immigrants I have don't acknowledge eachother and the missing relation cannot be replaced. They simply refuse to even look at eachother.
Thus they cannot become lovers... or friends or even passing acquaintances. It's quite sad really. :(

So dwarves that are widowed don't remarry. But do dwarves find a new lover if the old one dies? The lover still stays as such in their relationship screen, which implies that they won't hook up with any other dwarf ever again.

Not neccesserily. The wife doesn't have a legends mode entry and no one acknowledges her in any way save for the part in her childrens' entries that simply state "her identity has been lost to time"
So you can't really draw a parallel to deceased dwarves whom have actually been confirmed to exist.

I've been away working for a day and a night so I'm only starting the game up again now. They have so far not married but I hope they will. I am itching to see what happens with relations when their children are born!

And yes, do the girls have a mother in their relationship screen?

Once again; no.

sounds like an issue with water pressure... though dwarves freak out pretty easily because of water and might be swept off the side or at the very least drop babies into the gorge even with mildly pressurised water

but who cares about babies amirite? i really can't tell you how to fix this though.

It's a rather ancient bug, dating back to before 0.28.181.40d:
# 001092 □ [dwarf mode][migrants]   (Report) migrant children that come with just the father don't recognize each other as siblings

Ah dependable Quietust. Whenever one fails to find bugs or previous threads, you are always there to assist! Thanks

Do they have the mother on their relationships?

No. It is a mystery who the mother is.. in fact legends mode says "The identity of her mother has been lost to time"

Out of curiosity, how do you think you would go about keeping the ghosts in their part of the fort?

I have absolutely no idea. Maybe build the necropolis, have everyone live there, seal it off from the rest of the world, let everyone die in there and HOPE that they will be content floating around their old pals corpses rather than haunting the immigrants who settled outside and never had any contact with them.

... this isn't going to work, is it?

Been quite a while now.

They've been here for a little over a year. Spending most of their time socialising .. nothing interesting has happened. The father earned two grudges and a bear stole some booze.

Looking at the children they don't remind me of the father very much. Pink skin, emerald eyes and an angular chin. Those are the only constants.. and since everyone has emerald eyes and pink skin in the fort I guess it's the chin and nothing else.

EDIT: HE DID IT! THE WONDERFUL BASTARD DID IT!

Single immigrant parents CAN hook up with the rest!

So far this has not changed the relations screen. The girls don't acknowledge one another and their fathers' lover is a "long-term acquaintance"

So I build a fort just to test wether or not windmills cause noise pollution, right? (the answer is no they do not)

and I'm about to abandon when migrants appear. It's a single father bonecarver and his two daughters. Okay, cool ... but wait a minute.

The girls don't recognise eachother as siblings. Is this normal?

I'm totally keeping this fort. Just to see if daddy can get married and make more children.

edit: the girls don't seem to get "talked to a sibling lately" thoughts and they aren't developing any new relations with eachother. They're just a blank.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Quern vs Millstone?

but the micromanagement is the fun part.

Edit:
I thought of ways to do the milling micromanagement easier. For myself that is, I know you already got it covered ... I love extravagant structures so building a windmill/millstone building is a must.
With a grate-fence enclosed stockpile that carries -only- the things I want to mill! and maybe a millers' quarters... it's right up my alley. You know? Only the dimple cups go in the stockpile and when I figure I got enough of them I lock the door and let the miller mill! Is he hungry? Too bad! is he thirsty? here's a well! I'm not letting you out before work is finished because you are NOT milling anything except dimple cups!

Since the wiki page doesn't state much about gear noise I ran a few tests. Dwarves don't seem to mind windmills or gear assemblies at all. Sleeping right below a windmill and next to the millstone isn't a problem! :) Doesn't that sound awesome?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: ... 'Creative' ... Elven Civ Names
« on: November 20, 2011, 04:22:27 pm »
New theory: Steam FBs are actually giant balloon animals.

I like this theory very much. :D

On topic.
Here are some elven civs from my game:

The molten boar. This ... this is awesome! Who said elves couldn't be awesome??
The elven saturninity... I had to google this. It either means to be gloomy or lead poisoned. In which case it's quite understandable that you're gloomy. Think these were night elves? ... emo elves?
The smooth flutes. I'll... leave that interpretation up to you.

I just thought of something ...

I would like to build a fortress that's divided. One area where dwarves live, one area where a tribe of olmmen or something similar lives .. and one area that houses the dead and where ghosts roam.

Building three forts is easy.
Befriending a whole tribe of olmmen is tricky and probably needs lots of pets being sacrificed. Herding them into their own wing of the fortress isn't too tricky but preventing them from leaving it is another story.
Making the necropolis is really difficult. Unless I'm mistaken I don't just need to dump the corpses down there but the dwarves actually have to DIE down there as well? I'd need to put drowning chambers and jails and hospitals down there just so chained tantrumers can kill themselves and infection patients die in the beds and such ...

I channel huge pits.

From these pits I dig exploration tunnels in all manner of directions. Once I find a vein I mine it out completely and then make more tunnels.
Eventually I get a massive complex of tunnels.
