That works.  It is rather clunky though.

It happens to even the best of us.  I did some really dumb things, but I forget what they were.  I had several lizardmen not be able to do anything because they start adventuring naked.

The wiki article on it outright states that there is only three states of wear.  I would like to see this conflicting source of yours.  Sounds like it is time for some experimentation!

If your dropping them, in my experience 4 levels is usually (but not always) fatal to goblins - they might survive for a few turns but they will die from their injuries soon after.

10+ should be enough to kill the vast majority instantly, and spectacularly.
Make sure you can get down there! You want their bones!
