Okay, followup question, is there any good way to get all the military dwaves to drop the unwanted items and equip what I want them to equip?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Problem with armor
« on: December 21, 2012, 05:45:08 pm »
Hi all, sorry if this has been asked before, but I didn't find an explanation on the wiki or with a search here on the forum.
So, I startet a new fort a few days ago, and now I got my military up and running. Thing is, my two squads of close combat dwarfs refuse to equip certain pieces of armor. They will equip their designated weapons, a shield, breastplate and greaves, but not helmets, gauntlets or boots.
I am sure I have enough of said pieces of armor made and available, and all soldiers use the standard metal armor template, I've never had this problem before and I don't think I'm doing anything diffrently this time around. Does anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong, or if this is a common bug?

Insane dorfs will probably still defend themselves I guess. And he is still a vampire so he's in good physical condition, a training program does seem like more fun than my original plan. Think I'll try that.

Well since he's not melancholic but stark raving mad I don't think he will actively try to kill himself, he will probably get himself killed in due time though.

DF General Discussion / Mørul the Insane Vampire

About four years ago a vampire came to my fortress. After a few cases of anemic dwarves showing up to work and one dead child I found the culprit, lured him into a small room on the tomb level and trapped him there. And after I while I kinda forgot about him, until just now when I checked in on him and realized that three years of misereable imprisonment has driven him stark raving mad.
Now he paces around in his tiny prison, alone, naked and gibbering. That I have so thoroughly broken this bloodsucker makes me all kinds of happy, but I'm wondering, will an insane vampire still feed on other dwarves? Cos if he's no longer a threat to anyone I want to release him back into the fort to serve as a warning to other night cratures that might want to infiltrate my home.

I know nothing about psychology, but you said that you blocked the whole incident out for months right? Then it came flooding back recently, kinda seems to me like your brain simply waited some months until you became a bit more stable again before it started to properly process your grief.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: thirsty dwarfs ... killed by carp

Hmm I'm pretty sure the barrel needs to be moved back to the furniture stockpile before anyone will use it again. And yes even if a barrel only contains 10 units it still counts as a "full" barrel. To my knowledge there really isn't any way to get alcohol out of a barrel, but dwarfs drink quite a lot so some empty barrels should be generated fairly quickly. Of course if you don't have enough you can always make more. Keep the wheels of industry turning.

maybe fish eggs drift through the slot and then grow up? lol

You know I'm not sure, but I think that's entirely possible.

One exeptional goblin axe lord in an old fort. He was caught in a cage trap during a seige and I decided to turn him into an unwilling gladiator, and use him as training for my meelee dwarfs. However he proved to be a lot tougher than any of my best men, killing many of my elites in single combat. For a while I was just gonna gather a squat of marksdwarfs and have him shot, but I couldn't bring myself to do it. So he served as a kind of ultimate chalenge for my champions. He lived for a good few years until a legendary hammerlord (I think) bested him. I never gave his body any special attention, but his memory lives on.

I'm gonna call it a bug, but a very touching one.

I was severly dissapointed by this myself, used years to train some awesome seige operators, then when the first siege came they wouldn't go out and use the balistas I had made.

Ancient:
Thanks for that tip. Would have been real usefull a few forts ago where I ran into the same problem and lost 15 dorfs before booze production picked up again. But bow I know what to do should it ever happen again.

I have this one fella in my fort who refuses to use the dining hall instead opting to eat in my Mayors personal dining rooml. I'm sure I didn't assign the dining room to him by mistake. Nontheless he eats his meals there, every time. And the mayor has to clean it up.

Draft the mother into the military and station her in the carp chamber. Once she and her child is gone the father can have a room all by himself.
