Yes, all of the thrust of an airplane is from the jet or propeller.  The wheels would just turn twice as fast.

No, we've got it. Our ability to get probes there proves it well enough. Mars only has a third of Earth's gravity, so you only need a third of the force to escape. It isn't as much as you'd think.

It might be somewhat of a design challenge for the space agencies, but we have the technology.

Probes don't need food or water.  Probes don't need living quarters.  Probes don't need oxygen or exercise equipment, nor do they need suits to go out into the environment.

The way to do it would be to send a bunch of crap to mars ahead of time, but getting the actual crew there alive, and keeping them alive on mars is going to require a lot of doing.

I'm skeptical of having the tech to get there.  Maybe in 10 years if we made an effort like we did for the moon landing.

Screw it, I'm doing it.  First part is encoding now.  Should I lock this thread and start another, or just keep this one?

Russians are nuking us. UVB-76 just went off the air a few hours ago.  Many speculate that it's a dead man's switch.

Jameson, Jack Daniels, and some girly marshmallow vodka.

It's actually my first time having Jack Daniels and I don't see what the fuss is about.  It just tasted like alcohol and wood.  Maybe my taste buds were just blown out by the Jameson.  I just find it surprising that such different drinks can both be called whisky.

I liked the Jameson just fine, but it had a funny aftertaste.  I think I'll stick with my Scotch.  I've been spoiled.

Ah Grandia 2, another of those games that I made it all the way to the end boss and never actually finished. Loved the characters at the time though.

Anyone want to watch me powerlevel, metagame, exploit, and min/max the fuck out of the Grandia series?

I've ulillillia'd both games hard (especially Grandia 2) and I'm starting a new playthrough.  As an added twist/challenge I will be playing them in Japanese.  Before I set up all the crap I need to record and stream the gameplay, I'd like to know if there is any interest.  Post if you'd watch it.  Feel free to ask questions as well.

The series is pretty easy (especially Grandia 2) so I'll probably be imposing various challenges on my self.

I'd probably start with Grandia 2 because I already have the emulator all set up.

Spoiler: Eric Powell (click to show/hide)

Definitely one of my favourite artists. :) His paintings and his ink drawings are all just so beautiful-- and his writing is excellent to match!

Some of the art in this thread is great.

Finished off the Old Pulteny last night, time to start on the Glen Grant.  Smells like vanilla and nuts.

Celebrations are in order, it was my last day at my terrible job.  On to bigger and better things.

I typically use spotlight/the start menu to launch any programs I need.  Going to the desktop is an extra step.

She still has a much better chance than if she was unarmed.  Especially since it's here home turf and she'd have a defensive advantage.

If the burglar has good reason to assume she's armed, they'll go to the next house.

That's simply not how it works. When people are going to rob someone, they'll typically bring a firearm unless they're meth heads without a plan. I speak from experience; having a gun doesn't do anything in a home invasion unless you happen to defend your house military-style at all times [or are lucky enough to be in a position to respond immediately to a threat]. I got out of my shower to my friends being held hostage at gunpoint in my basement, waiting for me to get out of the shower so they could rob us all at once. I own two rifles and I'm trained at self defence. I consider myself more than prepared; but often you do not want to give the criminals a reason to kill you. And I doubt your grandmother would handle such a situation as well as I did, without getting someone shot.

Telling people to fight fire with fire in such cases is argueably more dangerous, since you'd be losing your life or getting injured instead of simply losing stuff.

That's why the arguement is a good example of an Occam without a real answer. Simple may not be the best solution in the case of gun regulation. I advocate more people arming themselves, but it's a double edged sword in the case of violent robberies. Hence why the issue is such a tangled clusterfuck of opinion.

That sucks, I'm glad nobody was hurt.

I think we could probably agree that sometimes having a gun would increase your chances of surviving an encounter, and that sometimes it would make things worse.

The focus on robberies is misplaced I think.  There are dozens of other scenarios where someone has come into your house uninvited.

Thing is, once a burglar is armed too, your grandma is figuratively screwed again, since physical fitness, in this case reaction time (as in who shoots first) is very much a factor again.

What defensive advantage?

She knows the layout of the house and doesn't have to move around.
