General Discussion / Re: Cop shoots a dog.

I swear, the 8 year old was coming right for me. For all I know, he could have been a biter! So put a couple bullets in him and made sure he went down!

...

yeah.

How about you not be a terrible fucking cop, and then you don't end up killing people's loved ones? This guy did this to me, well, let's just say I myself would be dead or in jail at this point, and it would be because this dickhole has no clue how to do his fucking job.

And judging by my experience with the police, his buddies back at the station are probably patting him on the back about it, too.

In other news:
I am pretty sure that I'm gonna get killed by a cop one of these days. None of my natural heat-of-the-moment reactions are conducive to not getting shot by trigger happy cops.
8 year olds can't rip your throat out, and dogs aren't equivalent to humans.

At the scene of a crime-in-progress, I'd treat a barking dog like a guy brandishing a knife.  If he's behind a fence, you can deal with him at leisure, ask him to stand down, take the time to pull out your pepper spray, whatever.  If he's running at you, you stop him.  Also, you can legshot a person...good luck with a dog.  Also, dogs run faster than people.  You can't maneuver to put space between you and a dog.
No cop will EVER legshot a person.  If you're at the point that you're shooting at someone, you aren't shooting to wound.  You're doing it because it's a choice between your life (or another person's life) and their life.  Leg shots aren't even non-lethal.  If your femoral artery gets hit, you can bleed out pretty quickly.  There isn't "non-lethal" place to shoot someone.

A dog may be faster than a person, but you'd be shocked how quickly a person can move.  IIRC, the range that a person with a knife can cover before an officer can draw his sidearm is 21 feet.  A lot of this stuff isn't as clear cut as you seem to think it is.

Is it just me, or is the latest Turisas album kind of crap?  I mean, what the fuck is this?  It sounds like the fucking rocky theme.  I want the epic back.

BTW, if you ever get the chance to see Arkona live, take it.  I don't know how Masha manages to keep up the energy and the vocals for 40 minutes.  Lots of vocalists hold back a bit when live, but she doesn't seem to at all.  They're flawless live.

Can't wait for tomorrow, I'm going to an Arkona and Turisas concert.  Should be awesome.

Dragonball was good, Dragonball Z is pretty bad.

My Chinese SKS has caused me nothing but problems, which is strange because I basically got it right out of the crate.  My friend has a few ideas on what may be wrong with it.  At least the bayonet works.

I've now tested it in IE9 on Windows 7, and it works in that too. What browser/OS are you using that doesn't support this?
Firefox 11.0 on Ubuntu 12.04
I've also run into issues with other programs.  My point is that it isn't something that can really be relied upon, and has caused me a fair share of grief.

Reading that, it seems unicode has non-printable characters for choosing between variants (e.g. chinese vs japanese style) of the same glyph: U+E0000 - U+E007F
EDIT: Actually U+FE00 - U+FE0F and U+E0100 - U+E01EF are the variation selectors for a single character, U+E0000 - U+E007F are language selectors for everything following.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Han_unification#Examples_of_language_dependent_characters
At least in chrome on Windows 7, each of those columns is visually different despite containing the same unicode characters as a result of the han unification. Therefore it would seem not to be the problem you make it out to be.
There's the problem: they all are all identical to me.
:edit: By the way, it isn't as if the characters are so different that you can't still read them, it just bothers me when things like that aren't correct.  The op probably doesn't have to worry about it that much.

IMO all text should be in a unicode format now, there's no excuse for saving text in any of the old encodings any more.
Unicode isn't all that great either...

Seconding the Mosin suggestion.  The ammo is dirt cheap too.  It's pretty much the most fun you can have for $200 (the rifle and a tin of ammo).  I have a 91/59, which is a carbine version.  It makes an absurd boom, massive pressure wave, and 4 foot fireball when I shoot it.  I actually shot it in a milsurp competition our range has and the people next to me told me they had to wait for me to fire before taking their shots because of the noise.

My favorite rifle at the moment is my #4 Lee Enfield.  It's a US Property marked Savage.  It's a joy to shoot, but the ammo is a dollar a shot.  As far as bolt action rifles go, the Enfield is my favorite, with the Swiss K31 a close second.

The whole "Japan is weird" thing is selection bias at its finest.  The western world only ever hears about the weird shit.

Quick, someone get a person from Japan to tell us how America is weird!
I've seen quite a few variety shows that take footage from shows like Cops for exactly this purpose.
Sounds interesting. Examples?
Well, that was an example :)

If you mean a youtube link or something, I don't have any handy.  I see this stuff on streaming television, and sometimes on ニコニコ.  If you snoop around long enough you'll see it.

Personally, I'd spend my time buying books, sampling food, and riding the trains.  Try some backwater ramen shops, things like that.

Which is why you can buy the Japanese version of Windows if you want to run it in Japanese. You only need the Japanese language pack if you want to be able to switch the one install of Windows between English and Japanese interface. I repeat what I said earlier: You don't need the language pack to be able to see or type Japanese text.

This is no different to Windows XP, btw.
Well, slightly different. You have to tick a box during the installation to install East Asian fonts in XP.

But yeah, Japanese support in general is pretty shitty.  Too many competing character encoding standards.  It seems every time I open a text file it's a game of "guess the encoding" to get rid of the 文字化け.  Don't get me started on the Han Unification...

At this rate we really just need to dump everyone out of congress and re-elect it entirely.
I think someone should start up a national Vote of No Confidence against Congress, personally.
Or maybe, I don't know, stop voting for these idiots in the first place?

People seem to forget that the reason these people are in office is because people voted for them.  If we dumped congress, we'd just get a slightly different one that would probably be just as bad.

I think we're going about this in the wrong way.  We need to go bottom up instead of top down.  If you don't solve the problem at the voter level, you haven't solved anything.

Hopefully we'll have Google and some other big tech companies on our side.  I don't trust Google in the slightest, but they have deep pockets, and if this hurts their bottom line they'll throw their considerable weight around.
