DF Suggestions / Re: Air Pressure
« on: September 24, 2009, 06:11:07 pm »
I'd mostly like air pressure simulated when filling a closed chamber with water and such.  I'm not sure about actually compressing air, and using it as a weapon is a bit of a stretch in my opinion.

Of course, this could easily lead to you being attacked by goblins that are on fire.

That sounds like tons of fun.

There is nothing more dwarfy than alestorm.

Was that... Accordion Metal? That is just incredibly awesome.

All the songs are about drinking too.

Rammstein is the perfect thing for DF ever.
I had just finished listening to the one somebody posted.
Any other good metal that sounds more epic than heavy?

Blind Guardian probably.

Hmm. You guys find DF more metal than I do. I think it goes better with stuff like Smashing Pumpkins, the Pixies, and Scorpions. Slower stuff, more punky. Metal isn't really base-building or strategizing music, to me.

There is nothing more dwarfy than alestorm.

Or, just dig out the area around your fortress, suspending it in the air.

Air isn't nearly as fun as magma.

It wasn't part of the original discussion, but I'll go on record as saying I think dwarves dig way way too fast (I think they do everything except walk way too fast, but digging is especially bad)

Living in Moria that took 100 years to dig is much more impressive than Moria we knocked out in an afternoon (or two years).

I know I'm in the minority though :)

Moria was a lot bigger than any dwarf fortress I've seen.

No way in hell.  Dwarf fortress is barely even playable on my eee.

Tempting but all my dwarves are super busy! I need them all including the children.
Don't see a problem, just use a noble.

Making digging slower for the player would adversely effect gameplay.  They need to be able to dig rapidly for early defense on less safe maps.

Well dwarves are great miners.  Goblins probably aren't.

DF Suggestions / Re: SVN Repository?

I don't really see the need for it to be honest.  The dwarf fortress install is only 5.5 MB, and that's the big version with the music.  It seems like it would be more a pain in the ass than just downloading the latest version.

While it would be interesting to look at the intermediate versions, they probably wouldn't be very playable.

DF Bug Reports / Re: [40d] *spoilers* HFS metal not surrounding HFS
« on: September 13, 2009, 12:44:17 pm »
the HFS does not have to be in the best metal you can find it does have to be in the same location though

Er, the entire point of the HFS metal is to hold the HFS captive. If there's a way out then it sort of defeats the purpose.

Maybe the HFS just don't have any picks...

Well adamantine to demons could be like holy water is to vampires.

So is there a single reason to make your fort underground as opposed to above ground if enemies can just teleport dig through any wall?

I don't really care about polls when the idea itself makes no sense from realism or gameplay standpoints. "My standpoint is more popular than yours" is a poor justification in it's lonesome

I do think that something needs to be done balance-wise.  The way I would prefer the situation to be handled is to have dwarves be less self sufficient.  Not so much that it is a pain in the ass to keep your fort running normally, but I don't think that you should be able to survive indefinitely underground.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Government
« on: September 13, 2009, 09:30:28 am »
I think you'll have the option to change some of this in later releases (not this next one).

I don't think it would really fit with the spirit of the game if it just had a menu pop up asking what kind of government we want.  I would prefer that the dwarves chose their own government to some extent.  It would be pretty cool if one of your military dwarves went off and killed a megabeast, and when he came back the current fort ruler was ousted and the hero put in his place.  Of course to make this really interesting, there will need to be things like corruption and scandals.
