DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Obsidian Swimming Pool
« on: March 07, 2009, 09:27:31 pm »
It got it into my head the other day that I must make an obsidian swimming pool, but not just any swimming pool.  I want there to be grass growing along the edges at the bottom of a long obsidian tube leading up the the surface, sorta like this...http://www.mkv25.net/dfma/map-4758-newcastle (go down z=levels until you find the bottom of Chamber T)

Though that example isn't filled with water and doesn't have obsidian walls.

I also want 4 giant obsidian pillars leading up to the top of the shaft which will be smoothed and engraved (just like the walls) with engravings of the highest caliber.

And finally, I want there to be 4 water falls starting from almost the top of the shaft and falling down to the bottom.    The pool will be regulated by pressure switches which allow for the water to flow in or out as needed to keep it at around a depth of 3-4.

Finally, I will have magma under the pool warming it and making the meeting hall a pleasantly warm area to be.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The pool will serve to clean, mist, and train up both social and swimming skills at the same time and in my mind's eye, just look really really cool.

The real question is, can I drop down the grass from the ground above and have it land exactly where I want it?

Won't leave behind anything else, either, though.

One could combine the two and build a obsidian farming station in the entrance to your fort.

In the process of clearing up your fort entrance you get valuable obsidian

You can also use magma as this won't leave behind muddy floors.

I love having a chasm when I'm playing with water. It makes drainage so much easier-otherwise I have to use huge open rooms for evaporation. Which isn't THAT bad, since the huge open rooms are a great source of stone and ore, and I can plunk catapults down there for operator training, but still.

You can return the water back to the river you got it from if you want some way to get rid of it.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: How do you break an aquifer?
« on: February 27, 2009, 11:01:44 pm »
If you have magma, you can likewise dig out a large chunk of the aquifer layer and dump magma into there, turning it into obsidian.

Be sure to NEVER EVER dig directly under the aquifer level. It will flood your fort.

The problem with messing with magma to try and get through an aquifer is that you often don't have access to magma proof materials until you can get under the aquifer, making the stuff rather unweildy and dangerous if you screw up your design.

I personally think the cave in method is the best.  Just build a support column and mine out everything else in the area, attach that column to a switch and clear out the area then pull it.  All you need to accomplish it are 3 rocks to build the mechanisms.   Everything else, including the column can be built out of wood.

From a fresh 40d9 or whatever, so... I copy over the file, abandon, then  check out legends and reclaim modes?
Go to legends and "export map and gen info" to get your seed.

What's the seed number of this world?  And can you post a picture of where you located your fortress.  It seems like it has every feature I'd want for a starting area.
