DF General Discussion / Re: Dwarf Fortress 40_08 Starter Pack r3
« on: August 18, 2014, 10:15:01 am »
So there were two problems I had with the old 34.11 pack that have resurfaced with the new 40.x pack now that DFHack has been reintroduced:

1) Sometimes (but only sometimes), when I hit 'r' to create a room (dining room, office, etc), instead of letting me size the room immediately I get 'No Owner Assigned' and have to hit ESC before I can size the room. I also get this occasionally when hitting 'r' to repeat a work order.

2) Sometimes when hitting 'm' for the military screen, I instead get a list of dwarves sorted by preferences for materials.

I can't figure out which script (or scripts) are generating these. Any help will be appreciated. I've tried resetting keybinds back to defaults (my preference), and looked through a lot of the available info on DFHack, but I'm clearly missing something. Any help?

In my stockpile I have dragon bones, unicorn bones, tiger bones, jaguar bones, black mamba bones. Point is, I have a number of fearsome or valuable skeletons littering my fort. But Oddom didn't want fearsome, or valuable. He had something else in mind. He had a GRAND VISION.

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, he made an ass hat.

DWARVES.

Has anyone got a seed that generates one (or more) embark sites with at least one soil level, a flat volcano, and a river within a 5x5 square? Ideally the entire embark site should be as flat as possible.

4
Build up a z-level. Construct fortifications along the entire wall, then station the marksdwarves on the next level up so they fire down on the goblins.

Though now that I think on it this might turn out to be impossible due to job cancellation as your civilian masons see the goblins while building walls.

Why the heck do aquifers have unlimited water?

They're powered by the tears of all the players who've tried and failed to breach the aquifer layer.

Exactly what goes into a 'liquid barrel'?

A stack of 178 Masterwork Quarry Bush Roasts composed of Quarry Bush Leaves, Cave Dragon Meat, Cave Dragon Meat, and Cave Dragon Tallow. It was well into the six figures, ~250k dwarfbucks.

My entire fortress must consist of 7x15 rectangles (and subdivisions of same) and 3-wide corridors between them, with up/down stairs at every intersection. Exceptions are only made for the tunnels necessary for filling my cistern (well) and magma trenches (if I embarked near a volcano).

Dwarf bedrooms are 3x3 because the 1x3 design looks ugly to me. I can fit eight 3x3 bedrooms into a 7x15 rectangle. Noble bedrooms, dining rooms, and throne rooms are 7x7, which is always more than enough to keep them happy (and conveniently fit 2 into the rectangle).

My Mason's Shops accept only Proficient or better Masons; my Masons don't have architecture, but my Haulers all have architecture and Masonry enabled. When I want a wall or floor made, IT HAPPENS.

Am I simply lucky when it comes to attacks from the river, chasm, and even magma? I can frequently hit the magma river by early autumn of year 1; I can't remember the last time I saw an attack from the river, and I can almost always fill the chasm with magma before I see more than the odd large rat or single giant mole.

It's a good thing, too; I don't maintain a military until much, much later in the game, and I don't even build early stonefall traps on the riverbank. Any serious attack would probably wipe my fortress, or at the least do serious damage...

I've never even *seen* a siege, despite some fortresses hitting the 10-year mark. Admittedly, I treat the caravans well (always letting them make a serious profit - it's a good way to get rid of clutter).

Am I simply doing something *too well*, here?  It's nice to have my dwarves living happy lives of peace, and all, but I feel like I'm missing out...

so the only things you can't run out of are food, drinks, and wood, and all those require some work to set up.

It's possible to set up arranged cave-ins through use of supports and levers or pressure plates - this is also an infinite supply of gray stone, though again it requires effort.

Generally, you should dig individual bedrooms rather than a single large one - unless you're building a barracks, your dwarves will be happier with their own rooms.

That said, a 7x7 room with a pillar shouldn't collapse. I prefer to leave undug sections rather than build supports, as supports can conceivably be torn down. Supports also prevent me from building a farm that overlaps them (annoying) and can't be decorated by my legendary Engravers.

My farms look like this:

| - wall
X - floodgate
. - floor
= - water
_ - channel
D - door

code:

||||||||||||||||||||||||||
==X______X.......|.......|
==...|...|.......|.......|
==.......|.......|.......|
==.......|...|.......|...|
==.......|.......|.......|
==.......|.......|.......|
==.......|.......|.......|
==...|...||||||||||||D||||
==........................

I haven't had a cave-in in ages.

Ingredients:

Gold Nuggets
Gold Nuggets
Gold Nuggets
Obsidian
Marble
Turtle Bones
Cave Spider Silk Cloth
Polar Bear Leather

Iltangerib, "Forkgorges", a gold puzzlebox
This is a gold puzzlebox. All craftdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is studded with gold, deocrated with turtle bone and polar bear leather and encircled with bands of gold and cave spider silk. This object is adorned with hanging rings of gold and menaces with spikes of Obsidian. On the item is an image of a dwarf and a dwarf in Marble. The dwarf is making a plaintive gesture. The dwarf is striking a menacing pose.

Possessed, though, so no Legendary dwarf for me. =(

Just how many rocks I had in my fortress. And not just rocks, but how many of EVERYTHING.

I disabled all of my Clerk's other professions, and told him to give me a perfect count.

He worked through autumn.
He worked through winter.
He worked through most of spring, and somewhere in there he became a Legendary Record Keeper.

Who was Mighty. And Perfectly Agile. And Tough. From WRITING DOWN NUMBERS. This perplexed me, until reason kicked in:

This dwarf didn't have paper. Or a pencil. He's been digging his numbers into BARE ROCK.

With his FINGERS.

He is, in fact, GROG, NEANDERTHAL ACCOUNTANT. That is one hardcore filing clerk.

I reported this one a while back. IIRC Toady discovered that it apparently has something to do with the job undesignating because the herbs are out of LOS of any of your dwarves.

This has been fixed for the new version.

Channeling uphill like that is a bug exploit.

The Romans managed to bring running water to half of southern Italy and sustain a population of well over a million using nothing but rock, concrete, and bronze-age manpower to build aqueducts and channels. Should be a snap for Dwarves.
