DF Suggestions / Re: Autoinclude low-level tasks in Job Menu orders
« on: March 03, 2009, 03:20:59 am »
Like I said, not total automation but something with a one-step limit in existing stockpiles would make sense. If you want to do something, but need to perform a lower level task with stuff you already have in your stocks, then automatically add that to be done by the necessary amount.

DF Suggestions / Autoinclude low-level tasks in Job Menu orders
« on: March 03, 2009, 02:53:17 am »
I searched for a bit and I couldn't find anything. Basically it occurs to me that the manager, being a live dwarf, ought to know that when I say I need 20 serrated iron discs if I've got unsmelted iron laying around but no bars then he ought to also order up some bars to be made.

It's not total automation, which would kill a good chunk of the fun, but it makes more sense than needing to add the two orders manually and then keep waiting for the smelter to catch up with the forge.

Introduced to the game by Mac Hall Three Panel Soul, gave up trying to dyslexically read the Matrix and found Mayday's combined graphics set.

From what I've seen so far flashing dwarves are either on fire or Legendary in something, get dwarf foreman and find out what it is so you can get them doing that as their primary job*.

Brooks according to the Wiki are just really shallow rivers with a special walkable tile on top.

Maybe I'm not getting something but why would you want to get rid of your nobles? Don't they provide a benefit or anything?

You could always do what I did and either make a doublewalled fortress with areas that are simply inaccessable except from your fortress but still outside.

Dont pumps transmit power up Z levels?

Artifact raw adamantine mechanism, artifact battle axe. I think it's time to use up my remaining supply of cheap materials to make as many crossbows as I can dwarvenly fit into that thing and call it a day.

With many diverse and Fun applications of the game's hazards. Or you could do what I do and get them before they make friends with anyone and turn them into a slave-class of hauler/recruit hybrids whose only purpose in life is to carry things around and then serve as a living punching back in the barracks.

And when dwarves get married they will share beds, which only reduces the demand.

The solution is obvious then. We must beg Toady for mormons.

I know, I just didn't expect to be so... lucky... and get everything sorted out so quickly. If I can just hold them off for a bit my magma reservoir will fill up and I can start my legendary metalsmith making adamantium plate mail and beating sticks for everyone and then we'll all be fine.

What's a crying shame is that apparently you can't deconstruct wooden objects to get logs back.

Can they spawn on the brook if I COMPLETELY wall off the outside of the map or would great wall of china actually work for keeping me safe?

134
(yeah I'm a graphics heretic)
Theoretically they could be coming in at the brook and going all the way down past the drawbridge and then working their way back up again but i've almost always got dwarfs there so you'd think I'd be getting ambushed up there instead of down where the trees are.

If they really do spawn at the edge hidden instead of cheating then I'm thinking my safest bet is to reclaim my original defensive line, trap the hell out of that, and just keep some caged animals there so the traps can deal with them.

DF Gameplay Questions / How far inwards do goblins' ambushes spawn?
« on: March 01, 2009, 01:04:31 am »
I've got a relatively well developed fort and enough of pretty much anything except coal to make pretty much anything I want, and with my magma forge area filling up soon that won't be a problem either. Only difficulty is that my wood source is outside and it doesn't seem to matter how well I wall off the edges of the map the bastards still spawn INSIDE my fortifications.

So, is there some limit to how far from the map edge they're allowed to spawn or will they just keep spawning closer and closer to my front gate the closer I set my defenses?
