DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Coffins
« on: August 22, 2009, 10:47:17 am »
Same, I run a population uncapped temp-on fortress. I've got like 50 wardogs right now and i stopped counting cats a while ago. Overclocked Q9450 will do that for you. Unfortunately I transferred that game to my substantially less overcompensating laptop where I'll now likely need to produce a great many Lavish War Dog Steaks and turn off temp for the time being. So much for melting my excess stone, time to train up some siege operators.

You would condemn your dead dwarves to hell on earth?  :P

That depends on whether they adopted a cat or produced an artifact mug.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Damming a 22-tile-wide river

Could you take a brook and modify it to big-river size? as I understand it they're self-filling water sources so I don't see why that wouldn't work even if it would take a while. I'm contemplating rearranging the brook path to turn it into a river with a more convenient path on my fortress.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Adamantine

Is adamantine the most valuble metal? and what can it be used for?

It's so valuable you get a special message when you find it and the king/queen themselves will show up on your doorstep ("dressed as a migrant") to be closer to the precious material. Veins of adamantine span Z levels (they go up and down) so if you run out on one level try digging downwards to find more.

Just remember not to dig too greedily... or too deep...

Then the only reasonable solution is to turn any possible part of the mountain over the HFS pits into armok's hammers and pray.

Don't forget the engraved tiles all over the place. "This is a masterpiece by Minkot Inashasmel, it is decorated with a valiant image of Urist McHammerlord and several pieces of Urist McNewbie."

I've got a champion hammerlord with layered HFS metal goodies and a HFS hammer and an artifact buckler. I had to give him a squad all to himself to keep him from sparring with anyone.

They wont use ores or anything important like HFS stone or such will they?

Out of curiosity how fast does the Fun arrive once the chamber is breached? Is it possible with a legendary miner and some stone on hand to perhaps just wall off their arrival point or the lowest level of the chamber where that is?

Most tilesets include a special "champion" one from what I've seen. In the classic mayday graphics for example he's a dude with a gold helmet and no visible weapons, which is kinda a shame since it means you can't immediately tell who's what.

Who doesn't detest/fear/whatever the GCS's.

I've never actually run into a live Giant Cave Spider myself, only encountered the remnants of their webs.

Along these lines does having pieces of web in various places (especially places you've hollowed out yourself) automatically mean GCS or is it possible they're just regular cave spider webs or even harmless cobwebs.
