DF Gameplay Questions / Re: What do tower-caps grow on?
« on: August 05, 2009, 03:37:08 am »
I can confirm, shrubs grow on muddied smoothed _ENGRAVED_ floors. And they destroy masterwork engravings:

"Urist McMaddened's work has been destroyed by the impertinent vegetation".

Took me a while to figure that one out.

Goddamn nature, always growing on things. It's all the elve's fault you know, we should teach them a lesson for this.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: 100 Dwarves
« on: August 01, 2009, 08:00:47 am »
I'm with teldin mostly. I tend to aim for getting one guy legendary with a workshop all to himself and then a backup for the non-legendary guy and then try to have about 2 dorfs per proffession with hauling only for their specific fields, a decent sized military, and then everyone else is split evenly between being miners and pure-haulers.

In a fortress of 100 or higher this usually winds up with me having only a handful of dorfs doing various trades, a sizeable army, and a ridiculous number of crosstrained miners and masons of various skills.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Elven town
« on: July 13, 2009, 08:23:18 am »
So I figured it could be cool to embark on an Elven town and have two civilisations building alongside each other.

Turns out the elves just stand around doing NOTHING.  No building, farming, mining or even eating.
Bug or not yet coded?

That's because elves have no purpose in life except to piss of dorfs. Seriously, what were you expecting from them?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Reveal & HFS

Use Dtil and just rehide the HFS pits and stuff afterwards, for me it triggered the "PRAISE THE MINERS!" message. I'm not quite ready to Have Fun yet though so I don't know about the pits.

Every rock is to magma what ice is to water Psychoceramics.

Just turn his labors off?

i suppose if one is playing with a pop limit where every dwarf counts, then ensuring urist mccheesemaker becomes a valued member of the military rather than moping around limbless, taking up a bed, does become important...

Retire him to civil service with a bed and a desk and slowly train him to be your accountant and manager so that he may live out his days in noble service to the mountainho-oh fuck it give him a bed and a lever under an atomsmasher in the middle of a field of cagetraps and tell him to pull it if anything green or with pointy ears gets near him.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: No Sand!
« on: June 11, 2009, 07:55:25 pm »
@Derakon:  I would, but my map is Dangerous, thus all trees are dead. No more will grow, which is pretty annoying- on a map where I need towercaps, I can't get them.

@inaluct:   True, true.

@Shadowex3:   Do you know the name of any such tile editor?

If you're using 40d11 then no but otherwise Dtil and Tweak (especially with the ForEachTile addon to tweak) can take care of everything. I use them both and they both can serve non-cheating purposes. Dtil for example has an option to turn off YOU HAVE STRUCK MICROLUMOLIVINNABAR!!11111 messages and For Each Tile can make some things, mass designations for example, a LOT easier to pull off.

theres always the semi-legitimate route of using a tile editor to pick a spot on the map that could fairly realistically be turned into a lake with some sand layers around it.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: avoiding cave adaption
« on: May 29, 2009, 02:14:32 am »
The other option is to just make your dining hall so amazingly awesome by placing every non-weapon/armor artifact in there and letting your legendary engraver loose like a maniac with a dremel that nobody cares about throwing up anymore. Cave adaptation isn't necessarily evil, it adds a little color to a fortress. Sometimes several colors.

Or just lock the door when he's asleep.

We don't do things like that here.

I say kill the noble in some demented way, and if anyone has a problem with it... kill them too. Cull those noble lovers and purify your fortress!!! BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!!!!!

Build bridge, retract. Place lever beneath bridge, attach to bridge, assign to hammerer. BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Waterfalls and caution pays off

Wouldn't it be simpler if using an infinite source (river/brook) to just have the water automatically drain off the edge of the map through grates?

You should butcher it and eat it. It's Fun.
