DF Modding / Re: New Graphics set in the making

Just upgraded to this tileset thanks to mayday and while I like the dorfs overall I find myself constantly pausing and squinting at 1600x1200 to guess at what it is I'm looking at. Your dorfs have amazing detail and diversity but even though they're the same size as the old mayday's the lack of any immediately recognizable feature makes distinguishing many of them difficult.

For example take the dude holding the big emerald. I see him and i know what he's up to immediately. Guy with the anvil? obvious too. Same for a few others. But then you have guys like the miner where they could've been made a lot easier to spot, have the guy holding the pick up like he's gonna swing it or something and make its size somewhat exaggerated. Same thing with the soldiers, I didn't even recognize some of them and the legendary ones stick out a good bit less than the old stuff.

Mostly it's a matter of size i think. At 1600x1200 these guys are pretty small and some of their distinguishing features can really be lost easily compared to the straight colorcoded enormous chibi-heads.

Go whine to the elves.

@the OP: If you want to play semi-legit you could try tweaking yourself some murky pools if that's possible and then using those to collect rainwater.

Hmm.
What to do if they want glass on a map without sand?..

magma

This is actually the answer to all mandates.

64
Do what I did and solve the problem entirely by just channelling or walling out every means of accessing or firing upon your base from the edge of the map except for one very long archery and trap dwarven atomsmasher tunnel.

Also makes dealing with elves easier.

What Time Kitten said. The recession has effected hell's economy as well, layoffs have resulted in only so many demons being available to do very impolite things to your dorfs' orifices.

Just let their clothes go to ribbons and never get any more, they're quite happy as nudists.

Have you considered just pumping the bejeezus out of the ocean until you hit the floor and then dropping magma that way?

Make a 1 tile meeting zone and let everyone idle the bejeezus out of themselves there until they get massive stats.

No drowning, no atomsmashing, and I think they're immune to magma as well.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Which nobles should I always kill?

Hmm...I've got a bit of dilemma.
My Mayor/Accountant/Manager/Broker is pretty good, legendary in most of her skills, working up on Architechture, Mechanics, Masonry, and Engraving, and I she seems to like mandating bolts (a sensible dwarf).
Problem is, she also occasionally mandates Adamantine items.  I don't know if I even have adamantine on my map.  I've lost one metalworker to the Hammerer already.
I kinda like her, but I've got another mandate ticking down.  I think I might just run with it.

Will failing a mandate always summon the Hammerer?  Or do they bring beatings or jail time?

I'd lock the hammerer up and/or strip him naked.

Is it?  Huh, I seem to have stopped understanding processors.  Although it should be pointed out that DF makes poor use of duel processors, so you could consider my processor speed nearly cut in half for the purpose of running DF (Though of course that means I get to run all my other background stuff on the second processor so nothing interferes with DF)

Doesn't work like that either. Multi-core processors are not additive, you don't get half the performance because it only uses one core although using both properly can get you double the performance.

Half-Life 2 looks just as good on a Radeon 9000, which was obsolete when it was released, as it does on a Radeon x1800, which was released two years later, for example.

Google image search for "fakefactory" and see if you can say that again with a straight face.

Karadan a 2ghz core 2 duo is far more than twice as fast as a 4ghz pentium 4.

I'm guessing you've never had a noble.  You can't assign them -any- jobs and for the most part they don't -do any- jobs or have -any- skills.  We aren't talking about peasants who just need to be tasked to do something and they're useful, we're talking about people who do nothing but consume resources and cause problems and throw parties.

I was responding to a guy above me that was talking about non-noble immigrants. Pure-nobles are bloody useless, but I'd keep a hammerer locked in a room with a booze/food chute Just In Case and the specific-job guys.

There's no such thing as useless dorfs. Anytime I get someone with no skills I turn him into a miner and pick a hauling labor for him. I've got a lot of mass-miners for excavating areas for rooms and the like and I NEVER wait for a hauling job anymore.

Is there a limit on what can be used for a prison or could you just set a legendary engraver loose with a chisel and fill the cells with bling so Urist McMadoff gets a white-collar cell and doesn't worry about it too much?
