On the wall is an image of the noble Urist "Dick" McCheney and a Pheasant.
Urist is making a plaintive gesture.
The Pheasants are laughing.

A good indicator of arable land on the surface is the presence of grass.

Dwarfs CAN walk through a waterfall AS LONG AS the water doesn't pile up. A proper drainage system should be implemented just in case.

And they'll LOVE it too.  :D

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: How many people use an orc mod?
« on: January 04, 2010, 04:56:56 pm »
I use orcs. Every time it gets to the point where a couple champions can handle the siege I add a tougher civ, currently at terrifying goblins.

Which orcs are stronger? The ones from Orc Mod or Dig Deeper?

Dig Deeper orcs are stronger, but Orc Mod orcs sometimes arrive on creatures like Wolf Spiders. Dig Deeper orcs have a stronger melee attack and use crucible steel weapons. Orc Mod doesn't give the player a lot of the new metals like Dig Deeper, but you rarely strike mithril before the first orc siege, and after two or three I had champions in iron taking down whole squads.

They are WAY stronger. The only way that I've been able to diffuse orc sieges in dig deeper is by enclosing myself or trapping the orcs between retraced bridges and bringing out the marksdwarfs. It takes a long time to kill them all, even with iron arrows.

I've never experienced this before, surely the rest of his clothes should be lying around someplace nearby.

I can only think back to my first experiences with fire and having absolutely no idea what to do.

This story is pretty epic. Is the farmer depressed?

I hear if you combine them with dwarven syrup you can make rhesus pieces.

Rated D for Dwarf.

Cacame was awesome because he was an Elf, the mortal enemy of a dwarf, that not only adopted the dwarven mentality but became the embodiment of it.  He led his nation to war against their hated foe, avenged his wife's death with the destruction of an entire civilization (how's THAT for a tantrum?), and though incapable of growing a true beard, his soul had a beard that would have put most dwarves to shame.

Though it's unusual Wraith became a dwarven leader, Goblins don't really inspire the same loathing as elves, being primarily regarded as the third iron ore and a little more than a minor irritant to skilled leaders.  Although the death rate among goblins makes his 2000+ year lifespan somewhat impressive, one can't help but be reminded by the fact that this was likely due to the fact that he just didn't do much.

Which, I suppose, makes him Dwarven, so long as you're thinking about the nobles.

I can't resist:

Note mildly violent content.  ;D

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Why can't abandoned forts survive?
« on: December 15, 2009, 11:43:01 am »
The feature i want the most is world generation type events still happen while playing the game... events outside your fort... like other civs taking over other civs, or births, or deaths, or megabeast attacking THEM...
Would make for some intresting news that merchants could bring...

This would be my 2nd most wanted new feature to be added...
Serriously, all the other dwarves forts are crap and are only twisted mazes and such... unless you mod them to be like humans and make towns n that..

Like hundreds of goblins and elves duking it out right in front of your fortress.

heh, kinda strange. When I genned this first, I didn't realise it, but as I searched and found more and more obsidian, I started going "hmm" and decided to check with reveal.

Turns out I had OBSCENE amounts of obsidian. I had no flux, very small amounts of iron, but giant supplies of gabbro, andesite and obsidian.

I was using maydays tileset when I genned that, so I decided to try out what happened when I genned it in a clean DF copy, and sure enough, I get the same site as the OP. I had no mods at all except for the tileset, which just makes it strange.

anyway, thanks for this! it's great :D

I genned it with a heavily modded game and came out with a map that caused me to a double take. It was substantially different, but still good enough for my purposes.

Of all the idiotic things dwarfs have been known to do, this is by far not even close to being among the worst.
