No they don't.  The other nobles are all buried in shallow unmarked graves.
Except the Dungeon Master.

The Dungeon Master gets a deep exceptionally-decorated labyrinth tomb, with random chests of gold, silver, copper, and electrum coins placed in half the dead ends.  The other dead ends are more literally dead ends, complete with pressure plates.  The walls are engraved by a legendary +5 dwarf who is chained in a forgotten corner of his own creation.

I trade with the elves for the extra wood and for the cool creatures.  I suspect someday Toady will give us reason to fear elves... perhaps I'll mod the races such that only the elves have ranged weapons.  Then they will be worthy opponents.

I fill my Hammerer's bedroom with pretty upright spikes, with the lever right outside.  One spiking for every hammer blow.  I'm pretty sure they admire the well-craft spike traps, as a bonus.  Obviously the room can be used to execute other dwarves if necessary.

I like Tradanbattlan's method!

No farming?  In an evil biome??
I didn't know anyone else had tried no farming, it's not really so hard in a normal area, but if most of the animals are skeletal what do you eat?  Picked herbs and traded foods?

If possible, when trading, offer a lot more than you request.  I generally try to pay twice what the traders say their goods are worth.  This will quickly make the traders and their civs *love* you, and they will send huge caravans with large amounts of whatever you ask for.  After a year or two I usually get five-wagon caravans.

Cooked booze, even without a trained cook, is an easy and valuable trade good.  It's kinda sploity though and I hope boozecooking gets removed or nerfed eventually.

After the first or maybe second immigrant wave, I have three types of dwarves:

Haulers: Custom profession "HAULER" or "PEASANT", has all hauling jobs of course, plus non-quality jobs I'm not training a specialist in.  I often give this group masonry, while my only masonry workshop is set to only allow my real mason.

Planters: Often called "GROWTEAM", I only ever have like four of these.  I like to have lots of plants, and four legendary planters produce a *lot* of plants.  Too bad the "brew drink" command keeps cancelling itself.  They only haul corpses and wounded dwarves.

Specialists: Dwarves who do one job and do it well.  Like planters they only have "burial" and "health care" activated.  My engraver is one of these.  I only use one engraver, at least until she's legendary from smoothing and I want to level up other dwarves.

Dwarf Manager really makes this all possible at all, of course.

I'm really looking forward to the burrows stuff because it sounds like I might be able to assign haulers to specific industries or areas, that might reduce a lot of the pathfinding I hope.  I don't know much about it though.

It's for the best.  At least for the tentacle demons, their FPS-draining ability goes through walls.

Ah, FPS, the weak point of all my fortresses.  I only remember losing one fort to attack, but it was truly the most fun I've had with the game (:

I can confirm that you might need a non-magma forge.  I was in the same situation, getting a lot of use out of my magma forges, but had to build a regular forge for a moody dwarf.

By the way, regarding the story, I forgot to mention two other things:

1. The books continued to update themselves after my clerk's death (spooky) and him and wife's joint room remained theirs after his death.

2. When I created a coffin, it was assigned to him but no body was brought there.

Are you *sure* he's dead?  Sounds like his identical(ly named) twin brother or body double may have met the kobold, outside perhaps, and chased it away for the glory of Armok.  However, in his zeal to protect the hoard from thieving filth, he tripped and fell in a pond.  Nothing unusual there.

As for your real clerk, he's updating your stockpile records in your main dining hall, because he's trying to avoid his wife who, um, is into injuries.  Is she wearing leather armor?  You should probably put her in the military, everyone wins (except the goblins).

I love threads like this...

onulelik Stelidthestkig, Mirrorsingle the Washed Conflagaration, a Rhyolite puzzlebox.
This is a Rhyolite puzzlebox.  All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality.  This object is adorned with hanging rings of Rhyolite.  2400 monies.

Cool... a game in which you must dump water on magma before it reaches a fleeing dwarf!  What a clever contraption.  All we need now is a live-action roleplay of it... and I think the game designer just volunteered!

At least it wasn't another hauler asking for shells, but at least they're entertainment for my dwarfcutter, I mean woodcutter.

Can't you still kill caged creatures if they're in a non-magmaproof cage? I certainly executed one prisoner (a dwarf spearmaster who was part of a gobbo invasion) by setting his wooden cage in my incinerator and giving him a bath.

Which worked really well, because he had some really, REALLY kickass steel armor.

I haven't figured out the cage system but now I really want to, so I can:
1) Capture some gobbos in steel cages
2) Dump the cages in lava
Now that's high security!  And if they escape *that* (heh):
3) Have hatches in the lava, with water beneath, so I can preserve them in obsidian star-wars style.

First time I saw the trade screen, I saw a bunch of cool stuff I wanted (like food and wood), so I selected it.  All I had was a valuable anvil I didn't know how to use, so I offered them that.  With the offer command.  Ok, now how do I request a good in exchange... oh.  Crap.
