Interesting podcast as always.

I imagine a unskilled tattoo artist painting his clients greatest fear on his body and the resulting madness to be a good source of hilarity.

ascending 234 times in a seven month

That number makes me think that he is probably a very talented programmer that wrote a bot that can play NetHack for him. I mean seriously, wouldn't a human get bored with it?

This isn't trolling. I enjoy NetHack. One of my ambitions is to ascend it once.

I just don't imagine playing it so much and not going crazy.

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-

I've recently started playing NetHack inspired mostly by the threads on this forum and as of yet I suck terribly at it. Needless to say I suffered the most aggravating stupid death in my life. Longer story short my best character sofar, a telepathic Human Barbarian, known for consuming raw tigers and being accompanied by his pet killer bee, was trying to clear the final level of Sokoban. The reason the his death was aggravating to me was that I was dedicated to be super careful with him in the dungeons, using the blindfold to scan the surroundings for monsters before mindlessly jumping into rooms and corridors. I was determined to get him as far as i could(being a hopeless optimist I imagined him being my first ascension)

The death could have easily been avoided if I had kept the same habit of paranoid fear during my second visit at Sokoban. Or more harshly, if i have half a thought about what I was doing :P.

Anyway shortly before his death my Barbarian was walking around naked and blindfolded trying to push some boulders into position. I was calm seeing that his telepathy detected on hostile creatures other than a friendly unicorn. Concentrating on how to move the last 4 boulders I stumbled upon a question mark. And it hit my Barbarian! Furious about the arrival of an invisible foe i tried to run back to my stash that was just a few steps away to rightfully smite the assailant with my +3 Axe and -4 AC armor set. Then, even more furious and shocked I found out that the question mark had me pinned down! All my Barbarian could do was bash at the aggresor with his bare hands and well... that fail. Furious with rage about the unfairness of the game I look at my characters tombstone:

"Obelix the lvl 9 Barabrian. Killed by a Rope Golem."

I stare at the sign for about a minute... Well yeah, maybe that makes sense.

The death could be so easily avoided... and thats what makes it extra-painful :(

Now all we need to do is to get Orlando Bloom to sign a photo say "AAAAAAARG! The magma! It burns my flesh!"

Are you planning on keeping your rougelike in ASCII or will you be implementing graphic.

If Unreal World is what you are aiming at then you will probably want to make a tile-based graphics system perhaps with the help of someone with artistic skills.

Just one suggestion that you might find useful or disagree with it completely.

Please for the love of atmosphere restrain from using anime style graphics! The are overused and put me off of almost any game. When you say you want to make an far-asian setting it makes me shiver that you might go for a anime art style which would IMO ruin everything. The setting is really poplar these days. Don't get me wrong. Ancient Asia(especially China) is really cool but only if you refrain from using cliche manga style characters and bullshit fantasy ideas.

I mean magic is fine but once you come into GIANT ENEMY CRAB and ninjas doing everything except using stealth then the setting will become "just one of many".

I hope you understand what I'm trying to state here. I hope your interest in Asia i caused by thier long and interesting history and not by the stuff you saw in cartoons. ;)

Awesome. I really want that new soothing music in the game. It really suits the atmosphere.

Are there any zombie survival mods for this, and if not why not?

No, because the actual game is mostly zombie survival.

I'm in X18 trying not to crap my pants... I never knew:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

could be so scary.

I'm playing with only Oblivion Lost 2.2 on Hell difficulty and so far I'm having a blast.

Gunfights were frustrating until I raided the military and got all the Ak-74 ammo I needed.

Mutants give me the creeps especially Bloodsuckers and Controllers.

The only part that irked me was the Agroprom document raid in which after entering the base via the underground I get spawned IMMEDIATELY in sight of a guard that triggers the alarm... up to that point I tried to do insane assignments like these by means of a nighttime stealth approach. I ended up having to sprint OUT of the base with the alarm howling and then infiltrate it AGAIN by means of a completely unprotected hole it the concrete fence. Even with mods and Hell difficulty the game doesn't really force you to strategically plan combat like I hoped it would... Thats a shame but its still excellent fun due to the exploration and atmosphere.

I too am downloading now. I always wanted to play this game but forgot about it eventually. Now that its a bargain I bought it. I think I'm going to try mods from the get-go. For a beginner who likes challenging games, which mods do you reccomend?

I would like a 2d top view real time strategy game with units realistically based off real world weapons and vehicles that would let you select a battlefield using google maps from anywhere in the world. It would then use the photo to generate the terrain features. You would be free to choose the scale of battle. If you want only a handful of soldiers fighting for your neibourhood, then you got it. You want a massive conflict fought over entire continents with only two sided, both claiming a nuklear arsenal, you're free to go. The game would have strategic zoom that would let you close up to see individual solidiers and tanks duking it out on the streets(possibly only as dot and squares but its still awesome) and all the way out would give you the big picture showing divisions and command centres on the globe. It would also feature a chain of command. The amount of micro control you would have over units would be limited to the distance they are from your command centre. A division thousands of miles away from any command bulding would react to orders slowly, and only respond to broad commands such as "retreat" or "fortify". However if you are fighting a last stand for your command post or just a small scale scenario then you can mirco each and every troop like a zergling.

tl;dr : an RTS with terrain graphics taken from google earth and unit graphics like in DEFCON. Gameplaywise Total Annihilation but on a massive scale.

Man, I wish I could program cause my idea seems like it could be doable.

Curses / Re: Conservative Crime Squad
« on: October 17, 2009, 11:08:31 am »
Its supposed to be cliched!

Also,  for the conservative crime squad, the game would scale better. In the begging, you would only have access to melee and weapons you steal. Those are adequate for your early needs but as more heat come your way and your conservative agenda grows then gun laws become more C you are able to buy firearms to better resist arrest. Also in an L+ country the police force would favour nonlethal methods and as the game progesess they would also become better armed.

Also the character creation questions would have to be replaced with more consevative answers...

Really fun to listen to. Can wait for the next one.

If I may make a suggestion for the storyline. It would be cool if the whole story and ending could leave it unclear whether the patient is actually possessed by a supernatural entity or if he is simply insane and his "powers" are just a figment of his imagination stretching only beyond what a sane person could do. A madman could think he is ripping an mythological creature to shreds with the power of his mind where in fact hes just beating up a security guard.

The characters backstory could be exposed by the demon and point to traumatic events that led to the possession. It will be up to the player to decide that what he sees is real or is it just whats in the patients head.

I hope you understand what I'm trying to suggest here. ;D Think of the movie "K-Pax".
