DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: November 23, 2011, 08:50:09 am »
Neocloister.

Mid way through the 2nd year.  One elven and dwarven caravan (elves just left).  Nothing too special; just got enough migrants that I can start focusing some on specialized tasks to train up skills (weapons and armor smithing).  Got loads of ores and just realized I had hit a layer of marble, so I've been stocking up on iron and flux for steel gear a bit latter on.

Have enough iron for my 12 troops ATM.  Still trying to figure out the squad system so they train... been on the look out for gobs, but nothing so far.

Oh, and also stocking up on raw adamantine, as my exploratory mining has hit the edges of some veins.  Holding off on the FUN, for now, and plotting some piping so I can cool the lava on the lower levels to, eventually, get all that ore.

And I have an artifact.  A green glass gem.   ... yeah...

Hrm... Well, I have a plan that should work... Won't fill the top level... But should be able to cast a ring to enclose alot of it... no telling how long it would take though.   Might do a test this weekend just to see if it can be done in a sane time frame.   And that it won't melt my pc...

On an unrelated note, I noticed an opening to the caverns... Level -96 iirc, right next to a lake.

EDIT:
It's doable.  Took me the better part of a year to get the plumbing in, but alot of that was due to mistakes on my part (been a few years since I touched DF).   Still, I only got to the point where I was getting fluids going in, so still hard to say just how long it would take to fill each layer.

Casting Hell in Obsidian IS doable, but labor-intensive.  You have repeatedly alternate between manually pouring magma and water layer-by-layer for each level.  You'd also need to build a wall around the edge of Hell to seal it off and keep the liquids flowing out, but I mean, who'd be crazy enough to wall off Hell?

Eheheheheheheeee...  well, I am that crazy... but not quite that impractical.  Maybe.

I didn't factor in the off-flow at the map edge though, and I've been away from DF in general for so long I'm not sure how to compensate for that ... for now.  But my gears are turning... so I might just do something...

Well, at any rate, I'm going to download the last save and see how this monster runs on my PC.  If I can get tolerable performance, I may yet put in for a go myself, but with my scheduled I only get 1 free day a week, so it has to run well enough I can crack out my whole go in one sitting.

Man, I'd jump in... if I had *any* free time these days.

On a related note (having skipped about 30 pages of updates):  This makes me ponder the feasibility of casting Hell in obsidian.

Or would that be to cheap?

Okies, after looking over my damaged raws, I see 2 things happening:

  • In my Minerals, any tile I set whose number ended in 7 'lost' a number of characters after the 7, from 0 characters up to 5 lines of text.  I see no pattern as to how much text was lost in each case.
  • In my Plants, some entries I had set to tile 13 and 18 ended up as 133 and 188, respectively, but no other 'damage' was caused in those cases.

I'm using a 16x16 BMP tileset.

I'll keep poking at it to see if there is some kind of pattern to it.

FYI, in the cases of those errors, the program showed the tile set correctly and saved & closed with no (apparent) problems, but some of the damaged raw entries did cause it to crash when I loaded them again.

Well, I love this to death, but I'm having all kinds of issues:

It won't run at all on my Vista laptop (it shows up in the task manager, but never has a window show up) and even after I kill the process windows thinks the files are in use.

I can get it to run on my XP desktop, but I'm seeing lots of bad data saved.  For example; I use tile #7 for a number of entries in inorganic_stone_mineral.txt, but in all cases of that tile, it fails to close the []; so I get:

[TILE:7
[ENVORMENTAL:SEDIMENTARY:VEIN:100]

and the like.

I'm seeing the same thing now with tile 147; so it may be an issue with tiles ending in 7?

Also, in at least one case, it not only failed to close the [] set around the tile #, but it ate the rest of the entry for that mineral.

In another entry, it ate the data between the end of the [TILE:7 till the middle of the melting point line, so it ends [TILE:7POINT:11017]

The smallest raws seem to do just fine, I'm only seeing issues with the bigger ones ATM, but nothing all that consistent about it.

Still, even with that, it's less work than doing it manually.

Kudos.

I try to check the dev log on fridays, and, well, bobs-your-uncle. ;)

Looks good.

I'd say hard to start with, for the lolz.  But change if it makes you not want to play, for sure.

Slithzerikai priest.  Custom build focused on spellcraft, anatomy, first aid & nature lore.  Otherwise built for as decent as possible defense.  Mabye the Pure Spirit and/or Divinely Touched traits, if possible.

Polearms weapon wise.

Pic #4 (pink hood).

I vote Final Fantasy, just cause I never played that one.

However, I foresee a victory for x-com.

Great to see this is still cooking; I might just have to figure out how to fix my broken instillation here soon.  ::)

UFO hunting in about an hour, yes?

Yes.

We have no BMUs, so we can't change anything right now - if it's not on the floor with us, we can't get to it.

Deon - We already found and ate that bug, IIRC.
