DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: A Conundrum Regarding Vampires

Excavate a nice little forge area for her with some magma beneath the forge...and a room off to the side, where her products would be undumped to the waiting dwarves below.

Same with the needed ore and other goodies coming in...

Maybe the occasional sacrifice of a baby/child to speed the vampire up...

A single spore lands, finds nourishment in decay and attains maturity..
In turn it exhales a cloud of life, a thousand spores land... so progresses Juffo-Wup.

No stranger than a kitten killing a bronze colossus...

Though in this case, the baby might be hungry...

DF Suggestions / Re: custom graphics per item
« on: March 27, 2012, 07:33:52 pm »
I'm not even playing the game but just heard some raves about how awesome it is. I just read a little about it and it's the kind of game my 12 year old son would LOVE (civilizations, history, story line, geography!), in short, it's nearly perfect.

Based on what I'm reading from everyone, this game _should_ be the next Minecraft.

But when I looked at some maps, a feeling of being overwhelmed came over me, and I know my (impatient) son probably won't even give it a shot. I wonder how many (millions?) of others haven't given it the chance because of that 2-second impulse as well? Minecraft has shown graphics don't have to be great...

Are there/could there be tile sets to replace the ASCII with very simple graphics (like the original Civilization games for example). Just so an outside newb like myself can tell I'm looking at walls, grass, trees, etc. It doesn't need to be pretty -- just representative so I don't need to try and memorize what I'm looking at (my memory is NOT what it used to be -- memorizing what a square root sign, ampersand, etc are (and different colors of each???) just ain't gonna happen).

Anyway, just want to offer some (probably oft-repeated) constructive criticism.  Is the ASCII art the most important, or would allowing 100x the fan base in to discover the richness of the environment and game play be better?

There's tilesets and the lazy newb pack is supposed to allow the switching of those and other things on and off.

Personally, let your son give it a try.  Irregardless of the graphics.

I can't even understand the fuss over tile sets, since any tile set used outside of ASCII just leads to images I can't understand.

Yeah, since clay can no longer be turned on/off for some reason it goes into every "stone" stockpile, irregardless of what it is.  I had fire clay in my cotton candy stockpile.

Guess I got lucky if sunberries are rare, I just downloaded the new version and found sunberries at my first embark.  I did do a custom embark with a Proficient Plant Gatherer.  Not sure if that makes a difference.

I'm about to abandon this fort anyway though.  Forgot to check for neighbors and I'm all alone.  I miss my gobbos.  Now it's just me and my 87 peacocks.

I'm going to count this as confirmation, and my 15 or so plant gatherers can go back to smoothing stone instead of gathering more bloody plants.  Thank you. :)

Much later, but an edit for it, since nothing shows it like a picture...you might have to squint a bit though, since I shrunk it down a touch...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

If yo've ever looked at ThinkGeek, they sell "unicorn" meat.

Aye, I know, watch my forum image.  <_<

Heh, I'm not really worried about it myself, if they exist they'll appear, somewhere.

I'm cleaning off the map more as curiosity due to the OP's question.

I always embark on good regions by preference.  There's something about unicorn soap and unicorn meat roasts that makes me smile.  Maybe they're both magically good.

Heh, then we shall see.  Since I'm denuding the whole map.  I'm kind of enjoying the Invaders:Off bit.

This actually got me looking, so far about a 1/4 of my 4x4 embark has been de-shrubbed without luck.

Of course, I may just be out of luck, since I found out the place freezes in the winter.

Is this a return of the mighty steel bin with the !!lignite blocks!! inside?  Though I think I remember this wondrous creation incinerating anything that got within a several tile radius (or killing your FPS if you dropped one in an ocean).

Still going I see...one...

Oh well, it serves a purpose, giving everyone involved some lighthearted fun...

Her spine isn't severed from what I remembered reading, so once her legs are set, after a while, she'll be up and back to mining again....

But then, I'm oddly enough not a fan of senseless death, when there are potentially years more of blood, sweat, and tears that could be rung from the subject, with just a little repair work....

Now if she liked elves...it would be a mercy killing...

I underestimated the # of ballistae operators...though I am amazed they hit something, even if it wasn't the target, since the ballista seems to be about as accurate as flinging a brick at a barn from a mile away with a 30 mph crosswind.

I'm vaguely jealous on a level if the map is completely dry, without any ponds o' stagnant water, brooks/rivers o' stagnant water, or caverns with stagnant water.

On the flipside, I'd have to deal with this mess.

True, I expect once he calms down (if he calms down), we'll find that his undying dwarf is still alive and all 4 of his ballistae operators are now dead, due to large bolts jamming the skull through the brain....

Yes, this I do disagree with myself, however his works in regards to the judicious application of war hammers to the skull, the profound impacts of chambers filled with water on the psyche, and many other tantalizing glimpses of the profound inner workings of the mind are simply fascinating.

I do find it more believable than the irrationally optimistic bends in the psychological field that rose from the works of Ramu ni-Rogers (an elf).

Poor Loud seems to have walked off a cliff into....the twilight zone....
