I did a Sinister no-trade Tundra and skilled out to the max.  The only equipment I brought was two picks, ~40 booze, 14 turtles and a handful (9 total) of seeds.  No one missed a meal.  Dwarves included 2x Skilled Miner, Skilled Wrestler, Armor User, Shield User.  Steel is almost ready and I'm gonna have the two miners tank the sieges and demons with steel picks and armor.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, points are worth much more as skills and worth less as plump helmet spawn and deer meat.

The elephant behavior is good, I agree.  Fun and unpredictable.  Its the merchant guards that are the problem.  If they were less aggressive about chasing any bit of wildlife they saw till one or the other of them was dead ... That behavior causes all sorts of nuisances, corpses and items way out in the wilderness, elephants all over the map being disturbed and rampaging on our side of the river, etc...

If they just chilled out, and stuck with their merchant after giving a brief chase, we'd likely have less elephant chaos.  Which may or may not be a good thing, but the guard's chase behavior needs to be reigned in.  It is currently a little outrageous.

Could the ice room just be at or very near the summit of the mountain?  Or dig it out of a Glacier.  Refridgeration, in lieu of motorized heat exchange or caged ice demons, might not be possible.  Install ice statuary in naturally frozen locations for best effects.

The map is a forest, either Cold or Freezing.  Temperate Forest?  Pine, Willow, Cedar trees.  The river as mentioned only thaws for a month or two midsummer.  I love it when it does though, because its usually around the time the human caravan arrives and the whole map will be green and blue for awhile after months and months of snow and ice.

The only time I had a weather related injury was when I built an outdoor mason shop on a tundra or glacier map and had the mason making blocks on repeat out there.  He was wearing his brand new undamaged clothes complete with a cap, gloves and mittens.  He was in pretty bad shape after that, dark yellow wounds all over and his toes had bright yellow injuries.

Funny I haven't noticed that in my recent game.  I just sent woodcutters out in late winter for some lumber and I didn't notice any Rest jobs or injuries.  Either its not cold enough or the injuries were minor enough to not have required Resting.

But the strange thing is that one of my miner, of which is now cave adapted and has never been outside since the game started over 20 game-years ago, has never worn anything other than this, and dont ask me why he's wearing three pairs of pants, I wouldnt know:

Its because all his original clothing, including gloves and a cap, has worn away to nothing and vanished.  He has been getting new pants and shirt when they get x(worn)x so there you see the layers hes added over the years, with the original stuff having completely evaporated from underneath.  He only replaces his shoes.  Go to his bedroom and [t]look in the cabinets. Bet you'll see how many shoes he has gone through in those 20 years.

Hah.  I got two maps going, my primary is a freezing forest (river only thaws for a month or two in summer) and we are early 5th year.

While dwarves come wearing caps and gloves and so on, the only items any of them have ever replaced are their shoes, pants and shirts.  I haven't noticed anyone injured by the weather, and I keep an eye out for Rest jobs, so if they don't wear the gloves or hats I made for them it is no fault of mine.

From my experience, even on cold maps my dwarves just want something on their feet, upper and lower body.

I do use the manager and queue up 30 shoes, 30 shirts and 30 pants. I mix it up a little, vests and cloaks.  I made lots of gloves, but no one is wearing them.  I made lots of caps and hoods but they've been ignored too.

The feet, lower and upper body are the main articles you want to get produced.

I think this is just a "luck of the draw" thing.  Some sites don't have access to the full, err meat catalogue.  But don't forget the Turtle!

Don't forget there are several pre gen worlds available for download.

Even my dialup can get a 7Mb world file faster than my laptop could struggle through worldgen.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Strange moods and gems

Yeah, well past the chasm.  Got a span over the magma too, but just to fortify a position to meet the demons another year or two away.  Longer if I have to retrain a smith to make my steel armors.

Like I said I have raw Crystal Glass and raw Green Glass on hand.  Raw Clear Glass is on the way.  I don't know what the quartz is, unless you mean raw crystal glass or rough rock crystal (got that lying around too).  I just got the spring immigration and needed to take a break.

Its that preference for Star Ruby that is gonna do me in.  Even if he'll accept another star gem or colored diamond .. I guess I'll just excavate a couple more shafts and hope.

DF Gameplay Questions / Strange moods and gems

My day one Armorsmith has gotten possessed spring of the 4th year.  He started gathering things so I left him to his own devices, but he never began his mysterious construction.  He is stalled out on Rough Color.  Some kinda gem he needs.  Naturally, I have gems lying all around, I haven't started stockpiling them and I have all the glass but clear (and its nearly complete).

I am worried though because he's been Possessed awhile  and when I read his preferences I see a fondness for Star Ruby.  If the raw clear glass doesn't fit the bill, is this guy doomed?  A very valuable dwarf, I spent alot of effort training him up.  Rubies are available, but even with an extensive mining project, finding a Star Ruby is such a longshot.  And I've seen plenty of times a dwarf choosing a materiel besides that he prefers, but with all the gems lying around, my smith either wants clear glass or something much more rare.  I haven't found any star gems or colored diamonds.  Damn.
