The elephant behavior is good, I agree. Fun and unpredictable. Its the merchant guards that are the problem. If they were less aggressive about chasing any bit of wildlife they saw till one or the other of them was dead ... That behavior causes all sorts of nuisances, corpses and items way out in the wilderness, elephants all over the map being disturbed and rampaging on our side of the river, etc...
If they just chilled out, and stuck with their merchant after giving a brief chase, we'd likely have less elephant chaos. Which may or may not be a good thing, but the guard's chase behavior needs to be reigned in. It is currently a little outrageous.

« on: June 05, 2007, 06:58:00 pm »The only time I had a weather related injury was when I built an outdoor mason shop on a tundra or glacier map and had the mason making blocks on repeat out there. He was wearing his brand new undamaged clothes complete with a cap, gloves and mittens. He was in pretty bad shape after that, dark yellow wounds all over and his toes had bright yellow injuries.
Funny I haven't noticed that in my recent game. I just sent woodcutters out in late winter for some lumber and I didn't notice any Rest jobs or injuries. Either its not cold enough or the injuries were minor enough to not have required Resting.

But the strange thing is that one of my miner, of which is now cave adapted and has never been outside since the game started over 20 game-years ago, has never worn anything other than this, and dont ask me why he's wearing three pairs of pants, I wouldnt know:
Its because all his original clothing, including gloves and a cap, has worn away to nothing and vanished. He has been getting new pants and shirt when they get x(worn)x so there you see the layers hes added over the years, with the original stuff having completely evaporated from underneath. He only replaces his shoes. Go to his bedroom and [t]look in the cabinets. Bet you'll see how many shoes he has gone through in those 20 years.

Hah. I got two maps going, my primary is a freezing forest (river only thaws for a month or two in summer) and we are early 5th year.
While dwarves come wearing caps and gloves and so on, the only items any of them have ever replaced are their shoes, pants and shirts. I haven't noticed anyone injured by the weather, and I keep an eye out for Rest jobs, so if they don't wear the gloves or hats I made for them it is no fault of mine.

The feet, lower and upper body are the main articles you want to get produced.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Strange moods and gems
« on: May 28, 2007, 04:09:00 am »Like I said I have raw Crystal Glass and raw Green Glass on hand. Raw Clear Glass is on the way. I don't know what the quartz is, unless you mean raw crystal glass or rough rock crystal (got that lying around too). I just got the spring immigration and needed to take a break.
Its that preference for Star Ruby that is gonna do me in. Even if he'll accept another star gem or colored diamond .. I guess I'll just excavate a couple more shafts and hope.
DF Gameplay Questions / Strange moods and gems
« on: May 28, 2007, 03:19:00 am »I am worried though because he's been Possessed awhile and when I read his preferences I see a fondness for Star Ruby. If the raw clear glass doesn't fit the bill, is this guy doomed? A very valuable dwarf, I spent alot of effort training him up. Rubies are available, but even with an extensive mining project, finding a Star Ruby is such a longshot. And I've seen plenty of times a dwarf choosing a materiel besides that he prefers, but with all the gems lying around, my smith either wants clear glass or something much more rare. I haven't found any star gems or colored diamonds. Damn.
