Life Advice / Re: How difficult is computer programming?

I want to learn C and C++ for a career or a job in computer programming.

Those languages are going out of fashion quite rapidly. Comp Sci courses in one university around here don't even teach C and pointers anymore because it's considered an unemployable skill. Even though IMO it's an important skill to learn how computers work. But you probably won't need it unless you work in something low level like operating systems or electrical engineering.

Try to pick up something like Java, .NET, Python, PHP.

I'd say it's almost necessary for everyone to learn programming these days. Doctors, designers, engineers, architects, accountants... you name it. It's the new literacy. And much like learning to read and write, don't concern yourself too much about grammar and spelling (code styles and syntax). Concern yourself more about communication and getting stuff done. I'll probably teach my kids to program whether or not they become software engineers in the future.

Are there cheap and effective ways to learn, or is it a "you get what you pay for" sort of thing?
Yeah, plenty of cheap online courses. My personal choice is WiBit.net. Good humor, gets right to the important points. I graduated from a good college familiar with C. WiBit taught me a little more than I learned in college, and secured me my job for the last 2 years even though I started not knowing a thing about Java.

Udacity and EdX offer some very good interactive courses too.

Also, how likely is it that there are people in China and India who want my job? I live in the US by the way.
Oh, very likely! I actually pay Indian programmers $5 for a week worth of work. You can probably go with the Tim Ferriss style of outsourcing components you don't like and selling it for more, though.

Nothing wrong with playing the semi-active IMO. But you'd have to be maxed in both AP and MP. It's hard for anyone but Chao to reach inactivity. I find it a boring way to play though and as mush, I've seen way more harm to the ship done by people being 'helpful'. It becomes pretty clear that you're mush when you don't help the ship. In some ways, helpful mush will also get a free pass out in that people are more likely to 'rescue' them with the serum or not kill them unless they're absolutely sure.

Also reporting won't get anyone killed. SDF reviews reports after the ship is destroyed. If anyone gets quarantined in the middle of a game, it's only because of something they did in previous ships.

Pfft... walking on water. Around here, building megastructures by hand show who's blessed by Armok.

I don't really believe a stealth win is possible. Mush are going to out themselves somehow like failing to eat food, not reporting morale, or damage from showers. Most ships have a health/morale tracking system by Day 13. But later in the game, damage sources are harder to track. By that stage, people will probably cure you instead of killing though. And then there's the mycoscan and spore sucker.

Just infecting a few other people means that you have some political weight to throw on the ship so that someone can cover your ass when you mess up. I find that when there's at least 3 living mushes, the mush have usually practically won.

You might be fine sporing the cat (if you're not Finola) or encouraging people to cristalite zones if you want to lurk.

Heh, I never actually sabotage anything on the ship. It's way too easy to track with good players. Maybe possible in later stages (post day 10) when everything is breaking down anyway, but be careful, since NERON doesn't announce sabotaged breakages. So if things like patrol ships, O2 tanks, fuel tanks, grav simulator break down, it's a dead giveaway of sabotage.

... Custom ship.  Everyone starts with paranoia, cannot be cured by shrink.  You don't start with any pills that cure it.

Here is why:
Sometimes, the stuff you type out is hijacked.  You can and will say fun stuff.
If you carry a weapon.... you may randomly decide to use it on someone in the same room.

Would love a ship like that. I'm getting bored of vanilla Mush :P

Everyone fails. It's a learning process. How many syllables did it take for you to learn to talk? How many times did you fall before you could walk?

Nobody gets it perfect the first time.

Success is a series of failures. Just try to minimize the cost of failure, that's all. The easiest way to minimize it is by starting small and doing it in some online forum where they can't bother you the rest of your life for embarrassing yourself.

Besides, I've embarrassed myself plenty when I was 14. Me and my friends just look back and laugh at it 10 years later. No permanent damage, but plenty of permanent skills and good memories.

So how did this turn out? Any tips in case the rest of us find ourselves in the same situation?
Get rid of the bodies as early as possible. I hear the best thing to do is feed them to pigs. You got to starve the pigs for a few days, then the sight of a chopped-up body will look like curry to a pisshead. You gotta shave the heads of your victims, and pull the teeth out for the sake of the piggies' digestion. You could do this afterwards, of course, but you don't want to go sievin' through pig shit, now do you? They will go through bone like butter. You need at least sixteen pigs to finish the job in one sitting, so be wary of any man who keeps a pig farm. They will go through a body that weighs 200 pounds in about eight minutes. That means that a single pig can consume two pounds of uncooked flesh every minute. Hence the expression, "as greedy as a pig".

I mean if they're not dead.

There's just enough oxygen to exceed that time if we can fix all the oxy tanks. Our health and morale's actually really good for this ship... on my other ship, we had far more serious health issues because of constant expeditions and everyone was spending AP scanning for cristalite. But we'll probably just end up top 50 in glory because of the lack of glory research and expeditions. Except that Roland who'll likely end up like top 20.

Yup, same ship! XD

FYI, we have an above average activity ship because we did a group jump together a few days before the MMM. I think these group jumps are the only way to get a good chance for a long lasting ship.

my current ship is on day 16 as well ( wonder if it is the same). keeping everyone alive is quite hard, especially since we have no medic/nurse, but we are doing surprisingly well. perhaps we will be able to break that D18 C6 record.

Sounds like my ship. This the one with the Janice who outed herself early and troll Terrence?

Lol, I love my first post. It's like I had no idea this was going to be a decent game.

I think what the game first needs is proper item management. I.e. clothes that don't weigh several kgs, stuff like more realistic leather tanning, sewing skills, etc.
Or better yet, less bugs or an autosave. The game isn't really playable yet as it crashes too much and there's nothing to really do but beat up trees.
THEN maybe an option to build buildings, then other stuff.

I usually try to convince people that I'm doing the infernal kube just to troll people into reporting me. It's become like a secret signature move :P

My favorite attempt was when people were pulling coffee for me every cycle and I kept asking on the chat how to know if I solved the kube.

Life Advice / Re: How to be a better offline conversationalist?
« on: January 14, 2014, 04:12:15 am »
There's a course on Public Speaking on EdX if you're interested.

You can also practice talking to yourself. Like the Sims! But do it in front of a webcam to know what you really sound like. Talk at full volume.

Also what LordBucket said. The best advice I got on conversations was "Don't be interesting. Be interested." Ask more about people and try to boost their ego and you'll have hours of conversations.
