General Discussion / Re: America is full of FAIL!
« on: October 10, 2008, 05:10:54 am »
Lol, China is powered on greed. It pays people minimum wages and sells their work to other people to make money from their greed. I don't see China being a happy place.

But you have a point.. plenty of people are much happier because of greed. It's one of the best motivational forces, next to pride and lust. Greed is a prime source of technology. The main problem with greed is that greedy people tend to see material wealth as a source of power. Material things don't make you happy, it's having things you want that make you happy(er).

I dunno.. I predicted that the American economy would collapse in the 21st century.. I just didn't expect it to happen so soon. I predicted it back when I was still in high school. It was just so obvious with all their foreign policies, yet the reliance on foreign products and workforce. It's a country with the biggest % of rich people, but plenty of homeless people surviving on all the excess luxurious food that the middle class are too snobbish to eat.

60-90% of people in any country are stupid. It's the job of the country's leaders to make smart decisions. When you get an idiot leader, for only a few years, he ruins everything and the country is often too stupid to do anything about it.

DF Suggestions / Re: Perversion
« on: October 09, 2008, 08:57:08 pm »
I like the idea. Sounds quite easy to implement too. That pervesion thing was awesome in the Total War games. It was quite fun(ny) having an angry, drunk, gay commander lie siege and enslave an entire town in Rome: TW. It was also fun trying to assassinate off some of my commanders and kings because they were ruining the entire town with their insanity. I had a King Leopold the Mad with 0 authority collapse my entire empire into civil war. After that game, I secretly tried to assassinate the heirs who looked like they'd make bad leaders.

With something like DF, I'd like to see how that'll go. It'll should be as common as artifacts :P

DF Suggestions / Re: Rotatable Floors :D

Rotating floors would allow ballistas to be moved around. It's an awesome idea.

Conveyor belts, etc would be cool as an initial placeholder too. I'd like to see a windmill-powered conveyor belt bringing food to the noble dining rooms :P

Or.. a conveyor belt where dorfs dump out recently mined stone/metals and it gets carried off to the smelter/mason.

Other Games / Re: MUDs

Yay, I was thinking about making a thread on this :) But on some other forum.

I dunno.. I've been looking at a lot of MUDs for years, but I've never found one that I like. Some are hopeless - fight for 3 hours, get gold, buy things, discover that everyone has things worth 10000 times what you could afford. Some are boring - wander around rooms x200, with all of them looking the same and only meeting 4 or so people along the way. Some just expect you to spend a whole lot of frigging time on the server, playing a few hours a day just to survive.

I want just two things in a MUD:
1. Being able to go around low level and not have people discriminate against me. Games with permanent death is good for this :P
2. Something that gives some tweaks of excitement, instead of just boring grinding with no socialization.
3. And yeah.. some people to play it with. Single player MUDs are boring :/

For this, I found HellMOO to be the only game that has suited my needs. It's definitely not safe for work. But what I like about it is all the sudden death and the non serious nature of it. I got killed about 4 times in the first few hours I started. And for those who think losing is fun, which it is, I think you'll like that. The first times I died from zombies, being stupid enough to run into an alley instead of on the sidewalks. Then I died from exploring dangerous areas and getting eaten by monsters. Also, there was once where I didn't look where I was going and fell into the water and almost got eaten by a mutant shark.

But it was all fun, not repetitive :)

Heh, I'd expect it such that only someone who is a very high Mathematics attribute could afford to make something like DF and still keep it not too unbalanced. Personally, I don't find most modern, "educated" game designers making revolutionary games - they mostly make a whole series of good games that add a little extra.

Hmm.. I googled up a bunch of other game designers I truly respect. Looks like anyone with a listed education have a degree in stuff like physics, engineering, history, etc. I guess taking engineering teaches way more about balance than taking design directly, and stuff like history and philosophy help a lot more with creative thinking.

DF General Discussion / Re: IRDC redefines "roguelike" - What about DF?
« on: October 05, 2008, 05:36:39 pm »
I rather like DF being genreless. I think it fits more into RPG-city builder as such terms go. A great game invents its own genre, or broadens an existing one :P What I didn't like about the description was the part where they put in the negative bits that roguelikes tend to have.

I think once proper cave-ins are implemented, this will be a part of it :P

DF Suggestions / Re: Digging Enemies.
« on: October 05, 2008, 04:27:57 am »
I'd like it to be like in Dungeon Keeper. The tunnelers will normally be worthless slaves that die as easily as kobold thieves (maybe they should be captured kobold thieves). They'd mostly dig against the walls to find a weak point, but if they couldn't find anything after a while, they'd dig through the wall. That made fortifying walls very important, but not the ultimate solution.

Antmen diggers would also be interesting. I know I'd be quick to wipe out an antmen colony if they were digging through my precious mountain.

DF counts as a roguelike under that description. It's got dungeons too in adventure mode.. they're just not so randomly generated.. and I haven't lived long enough in adventure mode to find monsters. DF does break the "numbers" rule.. most of the stats and stuff avoid numbers. It also breaks the "non-modal" one.

Which gets me thinking.. the one about roguelikes being ASCII, using numbers, and being non-modal is stupid. I am not happy about this description either. All the "roguelikes" I like are no longer so roguelike.

I'd like a cyborg dwarf with a prosthetic eye and a brain stolen from a dead goblin macelord.

Anyone ever played IVAN? I like how you could use a scroll of material changing to turn your arm into steel. My brother once accidentally turned his arm into a golem with a scroll in IVAN once. The golem killed the poor defenseless guy.

It would be awesome if DF had something like that.

After spending some time pondering on whether it's ethical to eat cats, I've come to the conclusion that feeding 10,000 cats to starving children is not at all a bad idea. Or selling them to KFC.. a cat is essentially a smaller chicken.

I think dwarves should donate bad clothes, which tailors would fix and re-sell.
