the only way you'll hit the HFS is if you dig through the adamantine, so just don't dig to low through that.

Uh, in my current fort it's been about 5 years since I discovered the fun stone, and I haven't seen heads or tails of a king, but I know my civ has one, so I think kings have changed in the new version.

Yep, looks like you have an aquifer, maybe you embarked on a multiple biome site, and one of those biomes has an aquifer? just maybe.

Thus far, corpses and the like don't disappear during season changes, you could just make a refuse stockpile outside for everything.

for further information, you can either do what deathworks suggested, or if you completely dislike aquifers, you can remove them completely from the game.

Definitely worth it. I'm usually looking for specific things in fortress sites these days, although I imagine that will change when the new version rolls around, as magma/underground water are virtually guaranteed now.

Until then, though, SHOW_EMBARK_EVERYTHING
Does anyone know if this works with the new version too? I cant get it to, but I could be doing it wrong? Driving me crazy!
The new version no longer requires you to search for all those things we valued so much in the last version, that's all I will say on that subject though, lest I spoil some discovery for you.

3.2ghz dual core, Vista 64bit.
4x4 embark with 1 small waterfall and 1 large waterfall(major river), 35 dwarves, no init changes that effect FPS, 60-100 FPS standard!

Be warned it's for 40d only, and you have to use it each time you start up DF if you want to make magma buildings.

1: any race with a gender tag(to make every member just one gender) won't spawn at all in world gen since they can't procreate!
2: Dwarf Companion is indeed what you would need to change any genders, not that I see why you would want to, one mother is enough for me!
3: using dwarf companion to change genders will also lead to funny side effects, as dwarf fort itself will only recognize that they've changed gender in it's code, and not in it's personality page and such, this will lead to samesex marriages and maybe babies too?

Well, I know this can also happen to melee dwarfs if there is a flying unit that's too dumb to go downwards, but that's as far as my knowledge of this problem goes.
