DF Gameplay Questions / Re: The DF2010 Little Questions Thread

If you turn off ambushes (say you're trying to get your fort and military set-up to handle things before having FUN with any "guests"... >_>), will turning it back on cause ambushes and seiges to resume? Also, can you turn off ambushes for an active game? I'm playing the Civ Forge mod and let's just say I now have a newfound hatred of sand raiders...and their magical "flying ants".  :'(

Yes to the first, semi-yes to the second, when you turn it off, whatever siege/ambush/thief that was going to happen that season will still happen, after that you're home free.

Is my artifact draltha bone short sword better than a steel sword?
I would say no, but I haven't done any research on these newfangled material values.

Tantrum spiral sparked due to losses from a goblin siege followed by ambushes, during which I forgot to keep an eye on booze stocks.
The death toll is rising as people pick fights.
Migrants.
The miners seem fine.

HALP WHAT DO I DO TO SAVE MY DWARVES.
Isolate the miners and the migrants, assuming the miners don't go insane you now have a small amount of dwarves to restart the fortress with without completely abandoning!
Basically once a tantrum spiral starts it's very hard to stop, unless maybe you have a newly installed mist generator. :P

Is there something I can make that works like a doormat? I just spotted a cat with ELEVEN PAGES of blood coverings on it's paws, along with some mud, flour, dyes, and sand.
If you're playing .16, simply make a channel in your entrance, have a bucket brigade fill it with 2/7 water, voila, instant washing machine for anything that walks into it.
The reason why I say .16 is that in .16 you have the option to turn blood spreading off I do believe, so even though the blood gets washed off, it doesn't get transferred into the water.

Always make sure your military dwarves have a non-military job skill, or else they will get unhappy thoughts when being taken off-duty.
Well, I think that's how it works at least.

Alternatively, dig back into your fortress, then build a wall to cover it up. :P

The traders aren't bringing wagons. There's at least one clear path to my depot for them. What gives?
It's a glitch ever since the introduction of .31, nobody ever brings wagons, the closest we have gotten is making wagons able to be pets, but that also makes them bring pet wagons, which doesn't turn out as well. haha

Anyway to make dwarves go inside?
It`s annoying during ambushes/sieges that they just keep running around.
Also with the introduction of .31 is the "burrows" system! this allows you to press r to define burrows for your dwarves to be confined to when an alert is set as such, most people commonly set the entire inside of their fortress as a burrow, this duplicates the "no dwarves allowed outside" order, but without the job cancellation spam and entrance dance!
To set the alert for the civilians, play around in the m>a screen.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Clothes as armor?
« on: October 11, 2010, 01:46:54 pm »
The clothing might offer more protection when used in combination with armor. That would be a good test to run if someone has way too much time on their hands.
In .12(though I doubt it's changed yet), wearing clothes under armor would make the game completely negate the armor itself, since the weapon has the ability to pass through 1 layer of clothing it gains the ability to pass through all, making wearing clothes very bad.

This would be really cool with something like the fortress defense mod, a group of 7 militia dwarves are hired by the queen to protect the mountainhome from every danger that lurks outside, eventually more and more dwarves looking to become part of the militia show up, hmm!

Yeah you can't clean them, I believe they disappear after a season though, could be wrong.

So I'm melting a bunch of useless goblin crap and I set all the copper mail shirts to be melted through the stocks menu.  Will the dwarves actively take them from the live goblins in the cages to the smelters or do I have to dump the shirts first?
You'll have to dump them first. (Don't forget to unforbid them too! but I'm sure you knew that.)

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Migrant issues...
« on: October 09, 2010, 12:31:26 am »
Sometimes migrants are just slow to come, also try checking your d-init's population number, you may have changed it without remembering!
But since you're getting dwarven caravans and that group of migrants in the spring, your civ is NOT dead.

The humans were caught because they fell unconscious on your cage traps, causing them to be caught.

They won't turn on you if you release them, unless you take too long to do so, then they might just go insane, but no civ will attack you over one fallen caravan.

I have a partial aquifer that's also partially connected to the caverns and is promtly flooding it. Since the intersection isnt much, it wont be able to flood ALL the cavern because of evaporation. However, it's killing my FPS and i'd try to deal with it ASAP although this also imply breaching the cavern early. Any suggestion?

if you aren't opposed to cheating, dfhack can simply paint an obsidian wall!
That'd be exellent temporary FPS fix. Can it also remove the wall later when I'm ready for !!SCIENCE!!?
Yes indeed, you can dig it right on down.
