I've been trying to make a booze trap.

 Imagne a corridor, four tiles wide. Halfway down the length of the corridor will be tile-by-tile nooks carved out of the walls.

 The edges of the corridors will be filled with rows of barrels of booze (I plan to make a stockpile of booze, then forbid it when it fills up).

 Inside the nooks will be built cages, containing fire imps. These cages will be mechanically linked to levers.

 When the invaders enter the corridor, the lever will be pulled, the cages will open, and the fire imps will attack the invaders. In doing so -- if my understanding of dwarf fortress physics is correct -- the booze will ignite in a chain reaction.

Right now I'm a long way off -- I don't even have any fire imps captured. If anyone reads this and notices a problem with my plan (ie, do exploding barrels ignite other barrels?), let me know, ok?
The barrels exploding won't harm anything.

Naturally, the reason you need water in the first place is because plants cannot grow on rock unless it is muddy.
So logic will tell us that they grow fine in soil, and they do, from personal experience.

To both your questions, no, you can dig out as much space as you please, and you can use any water you please, as well.

I had one behind a forbidden door, that's about it. (breeding and butchery center, haha)
But yeah, I just removed CAN_SPEAK and they worked fine, though I think BONECARN was making them hungry/thirsty as well.

Ramps would work best.
You can't dismantle down stairs except through channeling, but, with the up and down stairs there your dwarves will be able to channel the down stairs just fine, no fuss, no need for access because of the stairs.

"Soldiers can go outside" means that everybody BUT soldiers has to stay inside, so yes, your soldiers can go there, they can go anywhere.
But if you have "All dwarves stay inside" on, no, your soldiers cannot go to that tower, any tile that has been touched by the sun before counts as a "outside" tile to that order, so if you have an above-ground fortress you're screwed if you want your dwarves to stay inside. haha

1: Change their orders, stuff like "Squad chases opponents" can get soldiers stuck.
2: There was another guy with a problem like this a while ago, where soldiers and goblins were just having a face-off, not fighting, try looking for that topic, I don't remember if they found a solution or not.

Do you have any kind of magma works? are the fire imps visible at all from inside the fort?
You should only be getting messages if the dwarves can see them, which would be understandable if your dwarves were on the surface, hmm.
If all else fails, give a champion a crossbow, tell him to attack dangerous animals, and station him near the pipe. :P

I would say just the one that bugged, but you may have to kill all of them, I haven't had a problem like this before.
Also, if you don't want the cave in to destroy floors below, just build some walls. :P
