Judging by the shear amount of farmland for those villages posted in the screenshots does this imply any farming changes like making things take longer to grow?

Hi sorry for not replying for a while. I haven't got very far on the map yet only some outside and a custom skybox (its all black for a dwarf fortress feel) Im thinking of adding the dwarf fortress music in as background music for the map. And about it being a problem to be blocky like the pl_minecraft map. Like dwarf fortress all blocks will be big enough for a heavy to stand up in they are all 128x128 in hammer units (the map editor).

ooh carp infested river didnt think of that. And yes lots and lots of levers are planned. My source SDK just finished updating (haven't touched it in a while) Im gonna fire it up and see what I can do.

Im thinking of doing a blank black skybox and using default textures. I may use some custom ones If I need too.

Basically I was on an irc chat with some friends and I mentioned something about dwarf fortress. Then one of the types in "TEAM DWARFFORTRESS 2" that gave me an idea. Sorry if this is the wrong forum but I wanted to discuss design ideas.

Basically Im going to be making a dwarven fortress style fort in Tf2 as a capture the flag map.

And I want suggestions.

Flooding chambers, traps, lava, and basically anything else you can think of.

So first Idea I had were 2 forts identical with a flag in it.
Second Idea was 1 Big fort (more true to dwarf fortress) with 2 flags in it 1 at the top and 1 at the bottom.

Maybe an attack/ Defend map where attackers attack the fortress and defenders defend it. Obviously no bridges or cage traps :P.

on .10 I have experienced aquifers everywhere...very annoying cant be within like 5 miles of any body of water unless its a brook if you don't want one.

Is there a way to tell which way invaders come from on any given map?

I dont want to build my fortress entrance only to find they come from behind

so is there a way to tell or do they just come from everywhere

DF Gameplay Questions / Do you have to tame animals to breed them?

Ok so i caught a male/female pair of monkeys and I want to breed them for use in the upcoming Colosseum I am building. But say i get a new type of animal and i tame and breed that too...they wont fight eachother because they are both tame.

Is there a way for me to breed 2 types of animals that will still kill eachother? or am I just out of luck. When i doubt I could always just throw some goblins in there.....

there is a green tick now that I manually assigned the weapons instead of using uniforms...strange thing is my noble have been acting weird for a while now. Like my broker wouldn't go to the trade depot (everyone pretty much ecstatic so it cant be unhappy dwarves) and my manager just got around to approving those cages i asked for like a dwarf year ago. Its not like I give the nboles much to do and they have all there needed offices and stuff.

Everything is working now I guess...........

Ive done all these things and my arsenal dwarf is different from my book keeper dwarf.

I have a crazy idea ill post back with results

ok not exactly crazy but apparently assigning them the weapons one by one in the military screen works... i dont know why the uniform didnt work for them...ill keep this updated if i notice anything more strange.

Ok so I have a squad and in their uniform I have them set to training spears and I have an arsenal dwarf he has  an office my dwarves are in the barracks "training" but all they are doing is becoming wrestlers...they don't touch the spears.

What am i doing wrong?

It would have been even more epic if I had gotten him to seal off the fort from the outside...but he wanted to die cant blame him though over 50 corpses of dwarves everywhere the stench of them rotting blood all over the walls. Must have been traumatizing.

It started out just like any other fort.

Farms, Plump helmets, getting rooms for everyone, Moods people going insane because I don't have any gems, making barrels constantly to make booze out of. Until i started on making weapons for a military.

Just before I got any weapon making done I saw a goblin snatcher. Ok not so bad he runs away. Knowing there is goblins in the area I am worried and try to see if i can get a military up faster. Then I see another goblin snatcher and another one and another one. Then my broker decides its a good time to take a walk outside and then bam. 6 arrows in his chest. It was an ambush of 6 goblins. Im like alright then so i make a small band of wrestlers followed by 14 war dogs then they deicded hey lets go party instead of killing these goblins.

then someone else finds more goblins suddenly i have a total of 12 goblins attacking me.

They go in and slaughter a total of 53/54 dwarves. The only dwarf left is this small former miner now the mayor of himself.

He currently is locked up in a hospital room in the fort with goblins ravaging the fortress.

This is the current result.


And here is my long mayor locked away dying of starvation in his little hospital room.


So thinking my fortress doomed i wanted to see how it ended so I watch the mayor.
Then all of a sudden migrants.
I create a burrow quickly in a small corner of the map they brought lots of animals and there is water nearby for them to drink till I can think of something else.



There is currently 6 survivors (7 including mayor but hes probably gonna die)
Ill name one after you if you ask.



Edit Actually now we have 1 survivor the rest were chased and killed by goblins who knows when they get back but since last time they gathered a bit of plants. The goblins now are very spread apart and far away.

The jewler is now building various farms for food

EDIT: some stuff went donw since last i modified this post the jewler died but I had 1 dwarf left that i overlooked he ran back into the now goblinless fort FULL of supplies...also dead bodies...and im proceeding to try and seal off the fort from the outside

EDIT: unfourtunatly the time i wanted him to seal off from the outside he just stood outside with a barrel like an idiot till goblins came and killed him...the end


(note I would love it if the goblins weren't somehow psychic )
