General Discussion / Smart Phones
« on: March 06, 2010, 09:31:46 am »
So my aunt works for a cell phone company, Verizon, and I recently got a Droid smartphone for dirt cheap. I am posting this from a car, on the highway, in upstate New York. I love technology.

Discuss smart phones or related technologies here. Do you hate them? Do you love them?

I am starting this RTD/RP here after posting it on the MyWorld forum just because I thought you people here at Bay12 would be interested. Players can create a character and they will be placed in a random starting position within their town.

A Day to Remember!

Mechanics: It will be an RP/RTD. Players will need to find food and water. There will be random encounters. Players will have free roam of the world. Each turn is six hours time and players can cram as many actions as they think they can get a way with. Actions will be determined by the rolling of two six-sided dice, one for sucess rating, 6 being the highest, and one for luck, six being the highest. There will be a realistic wound/recovery system. There will be a basic overhead map drawn of the play area for each player. There will be NPCs with varied relationships to players be it enemy, friend, wife, child.

Backstory: You are a citizen of a city or village that has been recently decimated/looted. The invading force has long since left and you find yourself in your home/business/hole. You find on your person, two days food and water, basic clothing, and tools and equipment related to your skill. Players can set their own goals such as, your family was killed in the raid and you swear vengence.

World: There is no magic. Players can choose any skills they wish be it smithing, looting, fishing, swordsmanship. The world map will be drawn up only after a player finds a map. Your civ has knowledge of steelmaking and basic knowlege of gunpowder.

Character Sheet:
Name:

Goal/Aspiration:

Profession:

Skills (be reasonable):

Any extra equipment (again, be reasonable):

Background (entirely optional but reccomended):

Anything else (pets, family members, ect.):

I will start when we have five applicants and I will update as often as my schedule lets me.

1. RandomNumberGenerator (Anthony)
2. Diakron (Henry)
3. Yarnspinner (Barton)
4. Relm (Terra)
5. Fisac (Daroth)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
For the past year I have been getting scanned in my torso and such after I was diagnosed with cancer last January. About two months ago, they found a spot on my lung and foot. There are remmnants in my backbone but it may just be scar tissue.

Well, I just got results from a scan I had yesterday and I don't have lung cancer or foot cancer of any kind! Yay me! The spot on the lung was a minor infection and the spot on the foot was just an old injury. I am filled with joy and releif and now I may just have to have a celebratory swig of vodka or something. Yay me! ;D ;D ;D

DF Community Games & Stories / Zafalduthnur (Airguard)

So this is my take at writing a story set in the world of Dwarf Fortress. My writing isn't the greatest because frankly I'm out of practice. I hope you enjoy it and it will be written in multiple parts.

It wasn’t a particularly nice day. The sun was out but the clouds were rolling over the hills and the scent of ozone was strong in the air. There is a road going through the hills towards the mountains and on this road is a lone wagon being pulled by two mules. As the wagon rumbled along the cobbles underneath, the dwarf in the back woke.

We’re getting close” said the driver without looking back. “The gravel turned to cobbles a few miles back. B’sides, you can see the smoke from the megaforges. Not much further now.”

The driver gave the reigns a snap and the wagon lurched forward. The rider poked his head out and was awestruck. The mountains were in clear view now. The sun shone off the granite slopes as if they were made from silver. There were massive plumes of smoke rising from unseen chimneys along the slopes of the mountain. As he watched, the driver turned his head and chuckled.

“Impressive innit?” he said through a toothy smile. “I’m proud to call ‘er home.”

“Amazing.” said the rider.

The dwarf looked around the back of the wagon, frantically searching the various bundles. He lifted up a canvas and a growl was heard from underneath.   “Sorry pooch.” said the dwarf. He began searching his own bundle, digging through the various articles of clothing and stopped. He turned back to the dog, who had a metal flask between his paws. The dog was a hound, bred for hunting and tracking , his ears hung down past his muzzle in a lazy, aloof fashion. “Give it” said the dwarf. The doge let out a grunt followed by a low growl. The dwarf held out his hand “Give it”. The dog shuffled his paws to bring the flask closer. “All right then” said the dwarf and he pounced on the dog.

The driver turned his head and shouted, “Don’t break anything you two.” He let out a “Hyah!” and snapped the reigns twice. “I wanna get there by nightfall you lazy bastards! Hyah”!

It was dusk when the wagon rolled up to the gates, the massive iron doors opened inwards and the sound of grating metal filled the air.

“Welcome to Kadolkirar!” the driver said with a cheerful grin.

Didn't see a topic about this so here goes. I just started playing this again and for those who don't know what it is, here:http://firan.legendary.org/index.php/Main_Page

The RP is great, and I love the idea of playing characters that already exist in the game world. The family system is very in depth and there are many, many occupations for players to choose from. I myself am a carpenter who has an apartment in the woods with a goat inside it. I call him larry.  :P

I didn't know if anyone of the forum actively plays this and I was curious.

General Discussion / Terry Pratchett and Australia
« on: November 30, 2009, 01:31:17 pm »
Hello Bay12. About two weeks ago I got back from a trip to Cairns in Australia. It was AMAZING :o . Rainforest, SCUBA diving, massive swarms of fruit bats, fishing, a beautiful resort/hotel, and everything else. Oh and Discworld. I have an Amazon Kindle that I got as a birthday present from my aunt (get most of my nice stuff from her). I downloaded Small Gods and Men At Arms before I left and figured I would read them on the flight. I ended up reading them in all of my spare time between rugby games and a bit of nethack. :P  Not to say all I did was read but I did buy Night Watch, Thud, and Guards! Guards! while I was there as well. Amazing books and I just downloaded Feet of Clay (I like the night watch). So this thread is essentialy here to discuss anything related to my post.  ;D

Other Games / Unreal Kombat
« on: August 16, 2009, 07:55:51 pm »
So I got back into Unreal World and have been playing quite a bit lately. Today I tried the lonely settler starting condition because I find it easy. As usual I made it only a few weeks before being beaten to death by some random Scandinavian. But this death was special. I came home to my settlement to find a foreign trader present and he was sleeping. I quickly whipped up a club and began landing blows like mad. He grabbed his shortsword but I quickly disarmed him. I continued landing blow after blow on his squishy head and arms. He had been beaten to his last limb and still hadn't been able to even touch me when suddenly his buddy comes rushing from the trees. Now I turned to look so both traders were in my sight. As soon as I did that this crazy trader that hadn't hit me for over two hours lands a chuck norris esque kick to my chest. I collapsed and died. I could just hear his words as I passed out: MORTAL KOMBAT!

So, does anyone else have any truly surprising combat stories from games that aren't DF?

DF General Discussion / DF Meetup Suggestion
« on: August 07, 2009, 12:12:09 pm »
Big idea ahead. Big, unlikely idea.

I think I know a good, easily acessible location for the DF meetup next year. Now, bear with me. I live in an area known as the Hudson Valley in upstate New York. This area not only has a significantly interesting geographical history but it also has easy acess to all of the major highways that run through the Tri State Area. Now we could do one of two things before we meet up at a restaurant:

One:
Now I live about two hours from New York City and I figure if the meetup occurs here we could spend a day at the city maybe go to the museum, a baseball game, or the zoo.

Two:
This area has literally TONS of excellent hiking trails and parks that are filled with wildlife of all kinds. We could go up to Minnewaska State Park and walk from the woods on the cliffs and slopes to the fields on top of the mountains. Or we could go to a few trails with excellent scenery and excellent fishing.

After that we all meet back at one of two locations:

The Brauhaus:http://www.mountainbrauhaus.com/
I've been to the Brauhaus when I was younger and it has absolutely excellent food. It is however small and is more of a restaurant than a pub like this year's meetup. Therefore it isnt much of a place to hold a convention of sorts. It does however have nice views of the valley around it.

The Gilded Otter Brewing Co:http://www.gildedotter.com/home.htm
This is a very popular restaurant in the valley. It has excellent views of the mountains, great food, and they brew their own beer! Yes, there are stills and pipes snaking throughout the restaurant. The problem with this is the price. The food, however good, is pricy. This is a very large restaurant so no reservations are required. Again this restaurant is a good choice but it may be crowded.

So Bay12, tell me if you think I'm batshit insane for suggesting this but it just hit me like a large Armanian with a 2x4.

General Discussion / Pets.
« on: July 16, 2009, 01:50:07 pm »
I've been wondering what kind of pets people on the DF forums are harboring in their houses. I myself have a cat, two parakeets, three sun conures, five turtle doves, a patagonian conure, a smallmouth bass, two perch, and the biggest sucker (fish) I have ever seen.
