DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Microline *shudder*
« on: January 17, 2010, 03:15:57 pm »
I have stopped trying to fight it. Instead I now seek it out in my fortresses. Then I dig out all around the microline formation. Then I dig out and smoothe the walls of my new living quarters.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How high till a creature explodes on impact?
« on: January 15, 2010, 01:26:38 am »
Dang, thats a bummer, especially since I now have a 130 foot hole that would be just as effective at a tenth of the size. Well whatever at 50 FPS it took 15 seconds for my test subjects to hit the ground, that seems like proper dwarven inefficiency.

So I have a somewhat related question. Is it possible for a creature to die in mid air?

I just built a 130 z level drop, and I'm thinking I might try and drop a creature down it that is about to die from thirst, or something that is bleeding out. Any suggestions on how to test this?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Fleeing enemies
« on: January 14, 2010, 01:43:15 am »
I have noticed sometimes that they do flee in specific directions. When I use an active defense sometimes the goblins will fleet west away from my pack of ravenous champions, but then will turn north or south and flee that way off the map, even if they were closer to just fleeing westward. It might have something to do with where they start out. This only tends to happen if they have a wide open area though, so the direction they flee should be easy to control if you are building an arena.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Swimming baby
« on: January 13, 2010, 09:31:26 pm »
I guess I've never seen a baby with any skills so I wasn't sure if the V-G worked. It didn't have any swimming skills sadly. I still find it odd that a baby could just float around -nearly- submerged for a couple days and be fine. Whatever, all of my dwarves will be excellent swimmers once my lake fills up and I can build my diving board (bridge).

I don't know how to see if a baby is skilling up. I nicknamed it swimmer so when it grows up I should know.

And the water depth was always 5 or 6, I know because I tried for quite a while to get the mother to rescue the baby but she would only go into a depth of three putting her way too far away to reach the baby.

The way I finally got the baby is I dug a passage alongside it. The second passage had floodgate protected channels connecting it with the main water passage, I let the water drain into my second passage and the baby got swept along with it.

So I was building my tunnel to flood the map, and I accidentally destroyed my safety feature. Well while I had my miners destroying my one ability to control my underground river a baby slipped out of its mothers arms. After trying a few attempts to station the mother down stream to catch the baby or maybe train the swimming skill up so the mother could reach it I had to give up.

I went about my business thinking of how I could engrave the mother's bedroom to keep her happy. But I never remembered seeing a notice that the baby had drowned. So I go check on where it is and sure enough there is a blue marker...but wait thats not drowning...its thirsty?
So after surviving 2 or three dwarf days in turbulent water is my baby going to be a legendary swimmer when it becomes an adult?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Elves not brining Animals

I pretty much have a zoo in my fortress because of the elves.  I have Breeding populations of black bears, wolves, elephants, hippos, chimpanzees, warthogs, and gorillas.  Plus a bunch of other random animals they have only brought once or twice.

Only drawback other then the FPS is that I occasionally get excited when I see the words "triplets" and "born" in the same sentence in the announcement screen only to realize it was one of the monkeys.

I Like to have organized stockpiles of everything, I'm weird like that.  So I always find at least a hauling job for my dwarves to be doing.

If you want to have them doing busy work then I suggest clear-mining large areas, then setting a 1 square "dump".  Have your dwarves dump the huge amount of stone into that one place (put all your stone work places next to it, or just anywhere that has easy access to most places in your fort).  Then fill up that space with stockpiles.  Also give your dwarves construction type designation...i usually have about 15 stoneworkers for a fortress of 100 and nearly constantly have some project running, though lately I have been running out of ideas.
If you want more food then give them the plant gathering and plant processing designations.  Its then very easy to designate large sections for them to collect plants, plus the plants grow back faster then trees so you can keep them busy at this for a long time.

Once you get too many dwarves who are legendary at busy work then you just draft them into the military and they become champions pretty quickly.
I've been running my fort this way for 15 years pop cap of 130.  Works pretty well =)

Did it with Note.

Thats awesome!  Thats just the type of thing I've been trying to do, except I'm using mayday graphics set so I'm not sure if all the same materials will work.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Dwarf art (need a bit of help)

So I've been having a nice time in my first successful fort.  Its lasted for more then 15 years which is incredibly long for me, usually i succumb to fun within a year.

Anyways I wanted a way to thank all my good little dwarves for working so hard, and I think I found a way.  I wish I could upload a picture to show you but I'm not too good at that type of thing.  Anyways its a giant image of a dwarf using individual floor tiles/walls/construction to create dwarf images.  My first attempt went ok, its a 16x13 image of a mason copying the mason image from the mayday graphics tileset.

I don't think its good enough though and I wanted something twice as large (around 32x32).  But I'm a bad artist so I was wondering if anyone knew where I could find 32x32 images of dwarves that only use the colors blue, brown, gold, red, (purple sparingly), black, and shades of gray.

Sorry its a very specific request, but surprisingly enough floor tiles weren't meant to create a wide array of colors for me to make my monuments.

One method that I might suggest for forcing single entry points but still allowing quick outside access along your walls are moats with bridges over them.  Connect all the bridges to a single lever placed in a high traffic area that you can quickly pull in the event of an invasion.  It may still leave some of your dwarfs trapped outside but it should protect the inner fortress area, by having your enemies funneled into the danger areas.

Also one thing you could do with the different fort areas you have going is to make them into drowning chambers for your enemies/elves.

How about you make a dwarf calculator that can compute some simple equations.

You could test the effects of a catapult or balista on goblin bodies by dropping prisoners into a narrow passageway ending in a fortification with a siege weapon on the other side.  Wouldn't be too hard to make I dont think, and you would have a nice gory passageway to revel in.

Aww dang they don't fight?  I have been collecting goblins for about two seasons now in the hopes that I can pit them against the Dragon I tamed.  Maybe I'll do it anyways, for shits and giggles.
