DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Just how wrathful are the elves?
« on: March 31, 2009, 06:44:49 pm »
keping the elves happy

Now why would you ever want to do something like that  ::)

I've been intentionally trying to goad them into attacking me. Apparently trying to trade them wood stuff and ignoring their requests to limit my logging aren't enough. Next step, seizing their entire caravans, and attempting to kill their diplomat...

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Dwarf won't put down "named" Weapon
« on: March 31, 2009, 04:17:21 pm »
Artifact weapons and armor get an enormous bonus to their effectiveness.  I think he's probably best off with his death-grip on that sword.

Is the bonus enough to overcome the original quality of the material though? I've got two legendary armorers thanks to strange moods now, so I can put out masterpiece steel armor. One of them made artifact platinum greaves. According to the wiki, the defense modifier for Platinum(presumably listed under the 'other' section) is only 50, while steel is 133. So, masterpiece steel greaves would have a modifier of 266 since masterpiece quality modifier is 2. Would artifact platinum greaves really have a higher modifier than that? If so it's time to strip my 89 kill champion again...

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Legendary Communal Bedroom Questions
« on: March 30, 2009, 02:30:46 am »
A single legendary communal bedroom can make everyone sleep like a king if planned right, but there's one problem: When the economy kicks in, most of your dwarves will be homeless, i'd say.
Don't know how the rent of a communal bedroom works, but if each bed counts as a legendary room, then it should pose a problem.

I'm stuck with that exact problem. Numerous dwarves can't even afford a meager 2x2 room with just a bed. I really need to figure out a solution soon...

An interesting side note about waterfalls, I've noticed that since installing mine a handful of my dwarves have mysteriously developed dabbling skill in swimming...  ::)

I just noticed this thread and also have to thank you for all the work you put into your tutorial. I've known about dwarf fortress for years now, but every time I tried to sit down and play it I was just totally lost. Now, my first fort that's grown out of the examples you laid out is going into its 9th year of slaughtering goblins(and humans...and hopefully soon elves too) and making shiny things ;D So thank you, for finally giving me the motivation and starting tools to get into this thing for real.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Dragon killed with 1 steel bolt
« on: March 24, 2009, 10:40:05 am »
My first megabeast was similarly anticlimactic. After my first goblin siege I set up a three row deep line of weapon traps in front of my entrance. Each trap was armed with three steel spears, because, it being my first fort, I rather unwisely wasted my steel to try grinding my weaponsmith's skill, and thus had a TON of steel spears lying around. Anyway, I get the message that there's a dragon coming, I quickly lock all my dwarves in inside, and try to station my, at the time non functioning, marksdwarves...and before I know it, it's over. The dragon went down to a single weapon trap.

DF Gameplay Questions / Dwarves not showing up on the Assign Bed list
« on: March 23, 2009, 07:01:31 pm »
I noticed the other day that I have dwarfs, who aren't injured or military, sleeping in my barracks. After checking them I see they don't have their own rooms, which I go to fix as I have some empty ones...and find the guys aren't on my list when I go to assign the newly activated bedrooms. Any ideas why this might be the case? Is it because the economy has kicked in and they just don't have enough credit to pay rent? These are pretty meager rooms, 2x2 with just a bed with sandy silt walls...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Your most badass dwarf ever
« on: March 23, 2009, 01:47:04 am »
Maybe not quite as awesome as some of these other stories, as this is my first serious fort, but here goes.

For about a year there had been humans laying siege to my fort. I finally decided, running low on wood, that enough was enough. The siege force was 20 humans, all wearing iron armor with no ranged capabilites, with one of them mounted. I figured I'd take a stab at sending my squad of high quality steel equipped Legendary speardwarves out to mop them up. So I set military only outside, lower my drawbridge, and station said squad on top of the human camp site...and quickly notice something wrong, one of my marksdwarf squads is moving, and I realize I've dispatched the wrong group! Immediately changing their station orders I breath a sigh of relief as they turn around...all but one.

Amost Furnacehealers, lover of my captain of the guard/legendary speardwarf squad leader, is still marching towards the enemy, apparently on a mission. Wearing middling quality steel chainmail, and with his crossbow in hand, to what I thought would surely be his death, as he was only midway up on his hammer skill in the event he ran out of ammo. In what is probably an important thing to note later, said captain of the guard apparently decided that killing some random criminal dwarf was more important right that moment than her husband marching to his doom, turned around back into the fort, taking the rest of her squad with her. So, one marksdwarf versus 20 armed humans...and a victory!

5 humans shot or bludgeoned to death, the remaining 15 routed, and no wounds to my now titled hero, Amost Furnacehealers the Helmed Comet of something, the rest of his title is cut off. Epic enough story for my first 6 years in my first fort, I'd say  ;D

I went ahead and stripped their armor and they're practicing now, I guess I'll have them put it back on once they're ready to actually fight. A quick question, I know dwarves with nerve injuries won't spar again, but they can practice with crossbows and gain skill? One of the guys I put in my new squad, I just noticed, has a brown neck injury but is still shooting at the range.

I guess I'll have to settle for that. I do indeed have walls, I built a second tower with fortifications on the second floor specifically for these guys to shoot from. Guess they'll be getting on the job experience  ;D

To expand, why are the dwarves I've assigned crossbows sparring and beating each other with them instead of practicing at my archery range? This is my first fort and it's going well so far, except for weird issues like this I can't figure out. I have:

-Made sure they all have crossbows(nice exceptional/masterful quality steel ones too) and quivers, and that they're not trying to hold two things in the same hand, I've turned off their bucklers

-Made sure that the archery range is set up properly, as my other squad of marksdwarves uses it properly(though, truth be told, some of them have the same issue...)

-Made sure there's tons of wooden and bone bolts around, and that they're not forbidden for pickup

-Made sure the squad is standing down.

I can't figure out what else I may have wrong. All they do is eat, sleep, and club each other with their bows. If it makes any difference, I had them wrestle to the point of champion/elite wrestle level before I switched them from unarmed to crossbow, if that has any impact on things. I've currently got humans laying siege, having a few more dwarves who know how to shoot before they decide to attack would be wonderful, so help is appreciated.
