Life Advice / Re: General Dating Advice Thread
« on: February 24, 2015, 11:00:08 am »
Good luck, Spehss, and remember it's not a big deal if she says no.
She basically said no by not responding at all. Which is totally cool. Not like I would prefer at least getting a "no" or some kind of response. No I'm not bitter. yes i'm bitter

it is OKAY.

Having to refuse someone is bad situation - straight basic no is cruel, so she might not want to do that.

Anything less than firm "no" is encouraging suitor to go on pursuing her. Which means that it creating more problems with that suitor down the road.

And of all, there is panic of "Wait ... what ... he want to go on date? Why? How did he get this idea?"

Best action? Nothing at all and hope suitor does not take it too personally.

Lesson? If you look at situation with her eyes she was messaged by creepy person who took her accepting fiends requerst on facebook as sign that she is available to go out with him. What is number 1 advice in that situation? Do not encourage stalker by replying him.

Luckily I have a well of nearly endless patience...at least in most cases.

Unfortunately I am lacking in the friends department...so that hardly helps. I have found the community here to be far more intelligent on average than most places on the net...which is nice.

I am certainly more than willing to be flexible with my standards, and I am not so strict as to reject women who come my way; not without giving them a chance at least. That is a rare occurrence though...especially since I am looking for a local relationship. Long distance relationships have not been kind to me over the years.

I guess all I can really do is keep trying.

1) Do not get too flexible with standarts unless you want to do hooks up for one night. Small thing that are tradeoff for female company in begining will soon become big issues.

2) Why do you have few friends? Is it introversion or straight up assery? I have seen people who value inteligence trying to impress others with their. Which can backfire easily.

3) Good estimation of long distance. There is no point - just do not do that. Even with exceptional women - do not do that.

Mashup of things that helped me:

You likely have interests - act on them. Join local groups. Just avoid the ones with too nerdy atmosphere (I would beware joining SF fandom group for example - too easy to get into arguments that make everyone look bad). Figure out what appeals both to you and women in your demographic and which is unlikely to attract people who will make you uncomfortable.

Take some lessons (languages are great because you will be talking to people and only smarter people will be there, You can try caligraphy or history or somethig along theese lines.).

If you want brainy women, do brainy stuff. Also, get some distance and accept that wast majority of nerd/intj/geek/gamer culture is not really what brainy women consider brainy - and that woman not being into that or even hating it is not stupid.

I have met charming smart older woman throught "comunication and problem solving course" paid by my then employer. As in, 18 years older than me lecturer. So that can happen. Fun times.

You also need practice: You can easily ask out women on adult interest sites (sites where people share amateur nudies that are combined with dating sites). All you need is interesting enough message. Use this purely as practice. Hell, you can find quality escort to learn basics of bedroom date if you want to and get some serious confidence up.

What you need most is practice in social enviroment. That comes before getting practice in dating. You need to be able to go out and have a cofee or dinner without it being big deal or making you anxious.

Talking to strangers, being witty without being asshole, being confortable in crowd... all that is learned skill, and is not closed off for some people.

Read up on etiquete. You can easily be set apart from crowd with that.

Read up some books: "How to Win Friends and Influence People" is valuable, but there are others. You likely need it.

Recognizing other people being interested in you and showing yours interest in them is very valuable skill.

Avoid "pickup artist" stuff - it is interesting, but also very misleading and dangerous.

Basically:

1) Opportunity - you need to create opportunities to meet someone.

2) Practice and Skill - you need to be able to use those opportunities.

Allright, new version is up. I think I have figured out autoupdater not working correctly with files containing spaces. Everyone who had trouble with this - can you please try it?
Looks ok, it downloaded ~350 mb sound files without complaining. (OSX)

Awesome! Thanks.

(small update with some fixes is up)

Here: http://df.zweistein.cz/soundsense/soundSense_2015-1_194.zip

Also, I have added latest Simons music to pack and some newly recognized events.

35
As for people who are having trouble with autoupdate: you should try downloading full pack manually, most current version always here: http://df.zweistein.cz/soundsense/soundpack.zip

As for attributions: They are all in xml files. I am sure some xslt magic can easily create list of them. However, they are not yet completelly done.

Simon: Thanks for new tracks, will add them asap :-)

Hello! I've been looking around on this thread, as well as trying different edits of system.xml, but I cannot get music to play when starting the game. I'm trying to put my own song in there.

This is the top of my system.xml:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I have checked that I have a sub folder in /packs/System called "theme", and that the song is in there and correctly named. When starting soundsense and DF, all it says is that it's playing the weather channel. I tried changing the channel to "weather" just to see if that worked, but it didn't. The gamelog.txt tells me "*** STARTING NEW GAME ***", followed by an announcement that spring has arrived and that the weather has cleared. Anyone know what's up with this?

I apologize in advance if this has been brought up other times, but like I said, I wasn't able to find any info on that when searching the thread.

Probably also worth noting that I'm using the packSkeletons.zip pack.

EDIT: Upon further testing (by trying to change the sound when finding new ores, and adding siege music), I found that the only sounds I've found that will play are the seasonal songs. Help would be highly appreciated! The packs where my non-playing sounds are located don't show up in the Soundsense Pack Configuration window, but the seasons folder does.

EDIT 2: I tried using the official sound pack, all packs load in the Pack Configuration window and then deleting all sound files there, and I only get default.xml, seasons.xml, trading.xml and weather.xml to show. I also tried editing the .xml file and removing all entries that didn't have an actual sound file attached to them, without success.

Can you send me your whole custom pack?

I’ll try to debug it.

zwei, when you remove tracks, could you please tell which ones and have some sort of changelog? I've been a faithful soundsense user since its very creation and the pack has greatly evolved since. Some tracks I liked were deleted, some were added and removed again, etc. But there's no kind of list that keeps track of all the, well, soundtracks over time. I find it immensely frustrating to find out a specific track I liked but whose name I didn't know has been removed and I can't get it back when I autoupdate.

First, you propably want to uncheck configuration of autoupdate which allows it to delete old files.

Seccond, I have not really kept changelog changelog for individual files. However, xml files are in repository, so getting track history could be easily done by checking diffs for seasons.xml

I love this mod! Except for the pick up and drop sounds. Granted, pick up and drop sounds in any game are questionable given the item in question and the material upon which it is placed (or from which it is taken) rarely match up to the sound - but the current sounds are like 5 seconds long of LOUD skirts rustling (judging from the name of the mp3 and the sound) and it's that sound of scratching fabric that gives a lot of people jitters.

I will probably replace them myself at some point, but I would imagine that other people share my shuddering at the constant distracting skirt rustling when dropping stuff out of backpacks. I'd be glad to record some replacement sounds (I've worked on this type of thing for bugfixes for fallout: new vegas, not the sound in question but the items to which the sounds are applied) if you're open to replacing them. If not I'll just do it for myself. :D

And I don't mean to be rude about this or insulting to whomever recorded said sounds. Maybe this is just me that thinks this. I searched the thread with the search feature but didn't come up with anything, but maybe didn't put the right keywords in.

Rustling sound was chosen to simulate "putting into packpack".

If you want to suggest new sounds, it is very welcome. If you want to supply them yourself, it is even more welcome! :-)

Rustling sound originated from freesound.org, so there will be no hurt feelings.

I'm trying to get SoundSense working on OS X 10.10 and DF 0.40.17, but without luck. I keep getting this error:

Code: [Select]
philip:~ $ sh /Applications/df_osx\ 0.40.17/soundsense/soundsense.sh

I have java version 8 update 25, which is the latest.

Code: [Select]
java -version
outputs:

Code: [Select]
java version "1.8.0_25"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_25-b17)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.25-b02, mixed mode)

So that should be fine. I have tried a modified soundsense.sh also found in this thread, but same result. Opening the jar itself gives an undefined error without any details, and nothing is noted in the console.

Is it a problem on my end or is there something else at work here?

Did you by chance have old vesion of sounsense over which you copied new one?

Error seems to point to the fact that soundsense.sh script does not contain reference to jansi-1.8.jar in lib directory or that this file is missing.

DF Modding / Re: Dwarf Fortress eclipse plugin, wip

Yeah I would like to, but I am busy with other stuff too.

38
No,  It's the Greig track in the hall of the mountain king. I know the song is probably public domain but I'm not sure about this particular recording.

Yes, I checked ID3 Tags and its recording is not PD, even thou song is. Sorry about that.

I have deleted it from pack and it will be gone in next update, in meantime you should delete it from your pack and it will no longer spoil video music.

That should be the last of non-free music, but if you get any more matches, definitely tell us again.

I have just uploaded new version to play store:

- Added ability to import zip file containing legends.xml and related files.
- Added cancel button to file selection so that you do not have to navigate all the way up if you mis-click it.
- Fixed small typo in site death event.
- Improved better labels for exported/shared text.
- Fixed typo in skill list for historical figure.
- Improved error messages when importing files.
- Added relationship profile loading for historical figure.
- Fixed rare crash when displaying hf destroyed site event.

Just had an idle thought while considering my -rather extensive- collection of music suited to playing DF. Is it technically feasible to add support for playlist files like .m3u or .pls? That would certainly cut down the amount of typing involved in adding songs.

Yes, yes it is. And I have done it:

New release, 2014-1, http://df.zweistein.cz/soundsense/soundSense_2014-1_193.zip

New things: support for playlists. See packs/default/sample.xml for examples of usage.¨

Basically, you can reference playlist in soundfile tag instead of ordinary sound file, you just have to mark it with playlist="true" attribute.

I just found this complaint about the "soundsense.lua" script prematurely announcing ambushes as a vile force of darkness, and thought I'd repost it here.

Ill look into that, thanks.

Anyone have the 43_190 build laying around? (as others have said, it's 404 - source archive too)

It's not clear what revision on Google Code is the "right" one, here.

Yeah, releases were confused, now homepage should point to right file.

New update for soundpack is up! Both via autoupdate and via full download

Five new songs by Simon Swerwer!

And small touchups.

Cheers!

In data/init/init.txt, change [SOUND:YES] to [SOUND:NO].

Or you can just delete files in music directory :-)

I dont believe ive said it before, but thanks for doing this whole thing.
Also, thanks for poiting out that simon made some new df songs, seeing s im a big fan of the old ones.

Simon is owed huge part of success of soundsense, definitelly.

Thanks for the reply Poonyen,

But i am still wondering why they are shouting that everytime they are done with making pincushions instead of when being in fear :D

Aqua

They fear consequences of their actions? I guess behavioral code handles "out of ammo, hostile incomming" as situation requiring bravery - and possibly resulting in fear if dwarves have low discipline.

I'm hopeful that down the line zwei will be able to introduce the appropriate languages in Fortress Mode and adventure more, but it'll be a doozy it seems. He's only got the gamelog file to work with. I'm not much of a voice actor, I'm afraid, and I squirm a little when I send out hunters. The "ost" one I can do better, I think (and will, once I have some free time). But in adventure mode and for now, the voiceovers might be just a teensy bit useful if I may say so myself. I'm really hoping other folks volunteer their voices later on, though. *nudge, nudge*

Yeah, sadly there is little available to distinguish speaker of line.

For example:

Code: [Select]
`Soldier' Urvadrakust, Elite Wrestler: Death...  This is truly horrifying.
Race does no figure at all in message.

You can guesstimate some things - he has player assigned nickname, so that can be sign of being dwarf, but only could.

You can use job titles that are race specific - but that works only for some (Wrestler is not, but Axedwarf is).

You could go by racial names/surnames - but that is messy (so many combinations) and not guaranteed at all (i.e. dwarf raised under goblin ocupation would have goblin name).

One could use dfhack to querry game for information required, but that would likely be framerate killer.

Speech is big project.

DF General Discussion / Re: Are raws displayed somewhere on wiki?
« on: September 10, 2014, 03:16:57 am »
Well,  :o, then I cannot mod them...
Yeah it's one of the most annoying things about the raws.

However, to be fair, in order to put all the buildings in the raws, it's not just a copy/paste. Toady would have to add quite a lot of new tags to make them work. Things like masons don't work the same as soapmakers. They have more automated hardcode-type stuff that would have to be transformed into a customizable version.  And the loom for instance would need some sort of auto gather tag whats-it, etc.

That would be AWESOME.

Really, auto queuing job based on existing materials (like hide tanning or fat rendering) would be game-changer. Autobrewing with only modding and no outside tools?

44
I for one dislike having to go through Google to download apps.

I kind of gathered that already, but not reasons. Is Google new Microsoft?

Anyway, as with all apps, you can find it on scrapper sites, like this: http://www.appszoom.com/android-app/dwarf-fortress-historian-michm.html?ref=from-search-results

However, I have no idea how updating would work - it still shows first version, but two updates were already published.

Thanks, I didn't notice that materials also have their raw attached. But I still  cannot find raws for workshops...

Most workshops dont have raws.
