DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Fear of Ramps?
« on: April 18, 2009, 11:58:45 pm »
Yes.  Doesn't matter if the ramp is actually defined by the upper level or the lower level - if both aren't working, it fails.

Weird shit, Maynard.

In my gen, the black sand was the second layer under that grassy area at the top of the magma pipe, very convenient for glass making.

I think there's more to gen'ing worlds than just the seeds.  I downloaded the Reveal from above (earlier in this thread), and while the physical topography is identical down to the last tile, the stone/ores/gems are not.

Do the math.

No one even starts drowning until the water is 5/7.  If you fill the entire area up to 5/7 (or even a little more), but have the pump already working, then 4/7's will appear almost immediately, and they'll just learn to swim that much faster.

A door and drawbridge connected to the same lever (or more than one), one the exit and one the fill end of a reservoir, will deliver a measured amount of water every time.  (When a lever is thrown "open", the door opens and the drawbridge raises - shutting the hall it's in front of.  Throw, empty. Throw again, fill.)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: I am not pleased, Dwarf Fortress Forum

BAM an error pops up in my face, and Dwarf Fortress just turns off (I don't remember what it was, it just happened, and I am angry >=-O)

Somewhere someone suggests using <ctl+alt+del> to quick-close the program - but somewhere ~else~ it's noted that that can cause fatal bugs.

Been there.

If you enjoyed the game before, you will again.  It's a learning curve - just not the one you expected.  (Who does?)

3515
Erm, yeah... I've found it already.

You already made that clear - but maybe next time it won't be such a challenge.

3516
No clue yet... I did some digging under the obsidian formation to the south hoping it'd be that easy, but no such luck.
Unless you consider using the embark map a cheat, you can find magma with 4 shafts.

Region icons are each a separate biome, and each 48 tiles across (you can call them 50 for quick navigation, 5x <shift+direction>.  If you find the approximate center of that biome mega-square, and dig a shaft 10 tiles to the NW, SW, NE & SE, you're bound to hit it.  It's just too big to miss otherwise.

At ~50% the damage/protection of steel, copper sucks, who are you kidding?  Copper is for chains, flasks and practice forging.  I got a masterwork copper finger that menaces with spikes of disdain for you right here.  ;D

Now, it's only in sedimentary
Although ther is no iron on this map, I'd just like to correct you...

Odd - that section was cut off, thanks for making that clear.

Yes, iron ores are found only in sedimentary and igneous extrusive (Andesite, Basalt, Felsite, Obsidian, and Rhyolite), which on this map is only the rhyolite, since there's no sedimentary. That was going to be the point of that sentence I guess.  Lots of rhyolite, lots of other ores, no iron ores at all.

Still a dealbreaker for me.  Shame, the map's great otherwise.  I had dug in toward the pit from the very top, temporarily opened it via the black sand to the 1st year of trade, then sealed that and re-opened toward the river.  Both glass and obsidian were in gear early... oh well...

You can't all be morons, so I must be babbling.

A ramp exists by itself, unlike a stair, which needs another stair either above or below it.  With a stair, the critter enters one, moves to the other, and they've changed level.

With a ramp, the critter enters the ramp, and then they must go somewhere on the next level - that "somewhere" cannot reverse their direction.  They cannot be heading north, step on the ramp, and then step off the ramp heading south.  They have to keep heading north(-ish) on the next level.

You can just equip everyone with platemail and shields... why wouldn't you?

Because heavy armor slows a non-Armor-User down, and they get far fewer "actions", and that would slow down both their training and combat.  That's why.

And their movement speed, if they're chasing someone, or running away from it.

DF Bug Reports / Re: [40d] Nemesis Unit Load Failed
« on: April 18, 2009, 04:09:56 pm »
This error can occasionally happen when you force the game to quit via, for example, the ctrl-alt-del task manager. Not an overly common error, but when you get it, it's not fixable.

Wish the game would exit on command a little quicker - seems to take forever sometimes.  But good to know.

I think a hard kill (holding the PC on/off switch) will not corrupt the file, as it has no time to do anything to the saved file.

It might be an idea to build in a couple of narrow-ish "ledges", and route traffic out there and then back in to avoid cave adaptation.  It would also save time on channeling out every last tile below there.  Kinda cool to have walkways up that high too, where nothing but flying critters could worry them.

But if your goal is a vertical plane, then nm.

Or just rebuild once the skill is up to par.

But an architect is only involved in a few types of buildings - and it's not clear how much effort even a masterpiece building is worth.

I gen'ed this world, it seems exact, found Heaven with no problem... but after 2 years and a MESS of exploratory mining, shafts looking for veins (spaced 6 apart) - NO IRON!

Now, it's only in sedimentary

I then resorted to something I'd never done before - downloaded and used the reveal cheat.  Not one tile of iron.  Hella copper, and gold and tetrahedrite up the wazoo, valuable gems like sand on the beach - but I'm just not prepared to fight everything with copper or steel recovered from scrounged weapons.

Heaven just turned into hell for me.  :P

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Magma Cannon plan

You sir, do not understand pressure.

And you, sir, did not understand Variance.  He's right.  He's just using the word "pressure" the way it's used in DF, which you are not.

Water one one level does not have "pressure" - it has "flow".  a 7/7 tile will flow out to tiles with less than 7/7, but that's not "pressure".

The only time you have "pressure" is when water (not magma) comes from a higher z-level than the area it's filling.  Then it tries to fill back up to that same z-level, up stairs and ramps and wells and leaks.  But a screw pump (or a diagonal) will stop that pressure, and only let the water "flow", possibly filling that one level, but not working its way back up to the source level.

A "screw pump" is not really a pump - it's what's known as an Archimedes Screw.  It lifts water, it does not push it at all.  Poor choice of terms - a "water screw" might be a better choice, more visual, to avoid preconceptions and confusion in terminology.  In DF, water "pumps" don't "cram" anything anywhere - they dump it.  It's on its own from there.
