Waterfall thoughts require only the sight of the waterfall.  Windows do not block sight.  Dwarves do not need to touch it.
Might have changed in a recent version, but that's 180 degrees from what the Wiki says, which is that dorfs get thoughts from walking in the mist.  I only know what I read, no ability to experiment with windows... yet...

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: "Office" not registering
« on: March 29, 2009, 10:17:04 pm »
I'm in my second season, just start of summer - no one is picky... yet.

And the door seems fine.

But update - I now am getting spammed by multiples of that same message between others - including the winner...

<Leader> cancels Update Stockpile Records: Need office. x65

The others are listed repeating x19, x4 and x 28.  Time to reboot?

(Edit - Oh, and the book keeper Settings are at "Low")

DF Gameplay Questions / "Office" not registering
« on: March 29, 2009, 10:02:43 pm »
So, built my Leader a tiny 3 square office, put a chair and a table in and made the office off the chair:

q chair/throne, r (Make Throne Room or Study), size, & assign (a) to the Leader. Then spacebar = done.

But then, much later, I get this message:

<Leader> cancels Update Stockpile Records: Need office. x14

Go and check the room, and it's all still there - the size, the assignment, the works.

So... what gives?  Is a "study" different from an office?

If it's just one or two stone, that dwarf who's building the structure will just move them.  If it's a lot more, they apparently get boggled sometimes.  (And if anything in that area is Forbidden, fuggedabowdid.)

As related questions, if you channel a river far away from its course and then loop back "downstream", will that be considered "fresh"?

Will that flow enough to drive waterwheels?

If you pump water into a dead-end channel (or one that has a floodgate shut), will back-pressure back up and leak out (and up?) somewhere, or just stop at "full"?  A pump wouldn't pump water higher than the level it's on, it doesn't create "water pressure", just delivers it to a new z-level, right?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Avoiding Hammerer punishments?

If one can (re)assign the position of Hammerer to someone with no hammerdwarf and low stats, they'll be more inept at their job but still carry out the punishment.  It's still risky, but it doesn't sound like something you want to keep doing indefinitely.

Edit: Ignore, badly confused apparently, nm.

It seems to be working - I think I had some occasional stones on the building site that *were* forbidden, and they could not be move, and so the cancellations.

But I still thought... meh, whatever.  So long as it works now. Thanks!

? - if you say so.  But I coulda sworn I saw "numbers available" before the slash earlier - tho' that might have been another screen? (Or another past life? Who knows...)

Meanwhile, projects keep canceling themselves due to "item lost".  Not all but a LOT lately - thanks, we'll see, I'll post again either way.

DF Gameplay Questions / Stone for Building is all 0/#
« on: March 29, 2009, 03:09:59 am »
Dunno what I did, but altho' I have ~tons~ of stone lying around, but suddenly Building projects won't recognize any of it.  When I go to Build something, it lists all those stones, but shows "0" as available out of the total.  They're not individually Forbidden, and my various stone workshops are finding it just fine for their projects.

I probably bumped the wrong key in the wrong screen at the wrong time without realizing it - but which and where is beyond me.  Any help?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Preventing water from evaporating?
« on: March 28, 2009, 05:46:14 pm »
4. open the gate connecting a murky pool to bite size section #1. now you have ~3/7 water across both these areas
5. let this new area fill back up to full
Will water @ 3/7 or greater not evaporate? Is that a threshold or something, that it needs to be "drained" instead of let alone?

What if you're in a "hot" environment - does that have an effect on pools or wet moats?

Did I read somewhere that it was also related to how the Emmisaries & Traders viewed your fortress, the type of deals you gave them, and not just what they saw/what you have??? (Not sure - a lot to read, a lot's been read.)

Migrants usually don't come until after the first caravan has spread your fame.  As such, a higher fortress value when then visit will impress them more (apparently, or something like that.)

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Getting back to embarkation?
« on: March 27, 2009, 02:55:15 pm »
If you haven't saved, you can just turn off the computer with a hard kill, and the file won't get updated as when you "abandon fortress".  It's inelegant, but it works.

Or, if you were clever you might have saved the original pre-embark file with a diff name or in a diff place so it wouldn't get changed/saved over, and the game would still believe it was virgin.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Bridge strangeness

... Dwarfs and goblins both fly to the east side of the all injured...

That's your clue - sounds like it's a drawbridge.  They were flung when it flipped up.

Did the bridge do something funny?

You may not think so now, but you'll laugh about it later.

I'll leave it to others better qualified to explain pressure plates.
