DF Modding / Re: reaction raws gone mad!

(yeah, if there's not a "gameplay question" here, you might get better feedback in the modding subforum.

As OP, you can move this thread via a link in the lower left.)

Depending on the layout and friendliness of your map, you'll need an "escort" if your megaproject is outside (or within 20 tiles of) your perimeter wall.

But yeah, I was going to go with blocks, miners + megaproject.  The blocks train the masons well.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Newbie Smelting question
« on: October 25, 2009, 01:17:26 am »
The wiki is there to answer basic questions like this - esp late at night (here, anyway), might be a good resource.

To do smelting you need... something to smelt - ore.  Like copper nuggets, or hematite (iron ore).  These usually (but not always) show up as a "British pound" symbol - £ -  in the side of hills, and later in stone layers as you dig down. You need a skilled miner (or a little luck) to dig out one intact, but even unskilled will get one after a few tries.

Once you have that, a smelter will use one ore and one charcoal to produce one bar of metal. (Edit - oh, and at least one dwarf with the "furnace operator" labour enabled, and not much else to distract them - doesn't have to have any skill in it, just tell him he's good to do the job.)

Once you have that, one bar and one charcoal at a forge will produce ... whatever - a tool, a weapon - the end product.

Try wiki "ore", and "smelting", for starters.  Maybe "guide to rock" if you're lost looking at the map.

Apologies for addressing the question you didn't ask, but I don't know how to mod this reaction either.

Won't help w/ this, but for the future, take a look at the wiki "starting build" - there are some suggestions for what to bring for different playstyles and considerations.  Some include "in case of moods" - take a look at those mixes, and see if you can adopt/adapt something that will help.

Since they don't, it's probably worth getting a couple of soldiers stationed... clear them whenever I get a chance.

Build/carve./use a small wall, and restrain a disposable animal there. Have your soldiers hidden nearby. Jump the li'l bugger and carve 'im up into imp steak.

Just to be clear, you do have your standing (o)rders set to "Dwarves gather f(u)rniture", right?

Albedo: as a minor correction to your earlier statement...

(I didn't say that... this time.

Nice catch on the Orders.)

(Just kill off the imps early. Monitor them occasionally, and when you see your chance take the time off from whatever project to recruit a few dwarves and go pound them. Solves the problem at the cause, not the symptom.)

They're talking about goblin mayors and queen consort/mayor in the civ list, not in their actual fort

Ahhhh... been lost a lot today.  Maybe I'll go drink heavily, so at least I have an excuse.  :P

Is it possible you mis-labeled the empty barrel stockpiles, somehow? Turned off quality or material, or "barrel" from the lists?   (grasping at straws, now.)

No one(?) has experienced every possible scenario, but I've read what I can, and never heard of any "wood destroying" vermin.  Nor have I ever heard of booze being found as a puddle on the floor.

My first reaction is "this is a glitch".  But I just don't know.

You won't find vermin on the z-stocks or units list, you'd have to do a visual  search for little dots and then ID them w/ <k>.

Has it happened more than once?

Your plan seems to lack... planning.

For (semi) creature-proofing, you dig to 2 short of the magma.  Smooth that 2nd to last, then carve it into a fortification. Then, from above, channel out that last bit.

If you mine straight in, say b'bye to the miner. Only a superdwarvenly agile miner can outrun that, and then only rarely.

You have to find a spot where the magma you want to tap extends out beyond the layer above it, to channel down to tap that - only safe way.

You can channel down into hot rock - the magma won't well up (possibly unless it's been pumped to where it is, and that's a more complex discussion.)  So if you're talking channeling (<d>, <h>), that's safe. If <d>, <d>, that's a death warrant. But your magma will flow.

If you have an entire "plan" counting on this, then 1) you learned an important lesson, and 2) you're about to learn another - either how to sacrifice dwarfs, or how to use pumps to move magma.  8)

I didn't think you meant literally! The barrels, just the wooden container, is disappearing? And the booze is in a puddle?  That's very odd.

Sorry, new one on me.  :-\

"She is getting used to tragedy."

That's in her profile. Is this a precursor to "Really doesn't care about anything anymore" for a combat dwarf?

Emptied barrels are being carted away to food stockpiles for storage?

(Magma is handy.  It's like early man and fire - once you understand it, it's your most powerful tool.)
