DF Gameplay Questions / Re: A Couple of [noob] Questions
« on: March 25, 2009, 04:50:10 pm »
I think you NEED an actual cave rive to grow tower caps, a river diverted underground wont help. You can still use it for irrgation, it just wont grow trees.

This is correct.  The game checks for if you've found an underground river/pool or not.  If you don't have one, you can't get tower caps, if you do have one, any water you put underground can form it, not just water from the underground river.

Personally I've been a fan of stone fall traps ever since the first dragon I encountered was killed by a single stone fall trap.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: dining room design.
« on: March 25, 2009, 11:10:41 am »
Legendary dining rooms are quite easy to obtain as far as I've found.  I always get them without trying just by smoothing everything.  I do a simple
Code: [Select]
#########
#        #
#        #
#  CTTC  #
#  CTTC  #
#  CTTC  #
#  CTTC  #

and generally make it about 20 tables long, so a total of 40 tables and chairs.  I get legendary before I even get around to engraving.

And yes, adding a glass celing will help prevent/cure cave addaptation.  Just be sure to dig it out and celing it before you put the room into use, otherwise you won't be able to use it while it is uncovered.

A waterfall in the room is just bonus unrelated happy thoughts which helps the dwarfs forget their huge work loads.

and have no idea ... if building buildings out of water is a bad idea.

How could that possibly be a bad idea?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Is afraid of trees?

Wow, I did.  No idea why, I haven't been attacked at all yet.  Must have hit it by mistake when I was trying to set up sand gathering spots or something.

DF Gameplay Questions / Is afraid of trees?
« on: March 24, 2009, 11:33:40 am »
So, I have a dwarf all set up to cut down some trees, but for some reason she won't.  It took turning her on and off the woodcutting labor a few times to even get her to pick up the axe, but now that she has it, she won't go out and cut down the trees I've designated.

1.  She has a battle axe and not some other axe, I checked.
2.  She definetly has the wood cutting labor enabled.
3.  She has no skill in wood cutting.
4.  The designated trees are reachable, one being about 2 tiles from my main entrance.
5.  Not getting any announcement about the task being canceled, just not going and doing it.

So is it impossible to train a newbie to cut trees down or what?  I'm fairly sure I've done it before.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Quick magma question

Ok, was just worried that any new additions I made would be considered part of the pipe.  Thanks for the help.  You've made my weapon/armor smith very happy.

Or for fun you can designate an area a barracks, then smooth out the walls, engrave them, add statues and such, and the lack of owning the bedroom should be easily matched out by it being so darn nice.

DF Gameplay Questions / Quick magma question
« on: March 23, 2009, 10:18:26 pm »
Because there aren't already a million of them running around.

Anyway, just set out and there is a lovely magma pipe that runs all the way to the surface about... way too close to my starting wagon actually.  I just wanted to confirm something before I kill all my dwarfs with lava.

From the wiki I know that 1. magma doesn't have pressure and 2. magma pipes fill themselves up to the top.  My question is quite simply, if I dig a side tunnel into the magma and make myself a little artificial pool or something, will that then be considered part of the magma pipe and thus start flooding my fortress, or will it just act like draining off a regular magma pool would?  Thus allowing me to channel into the magma to use for forges and other good fun?

(Answer quick please, my weapon/armor smith is getting bored)

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Sudden new civvies without migrant wave

Children can run around and do stuff without your consent, so it is possible for them to grow up with a profession.  Had a child complete a mood not too long ago, and grew up to be a legendary stonecrafter.  My guess would be that is where you are getting your new people from.

Other then that, removing your meeting hall shouldn't allow for teleportation.  Try checking through your announcements (with the a key) and see if you missed a new wave.  They can come during any season except perhaps winter as far as I know.

147
I haven't found any reason to let a field lie fallow at the moment, so for right now, I fill up every season with something.

I have... Having too much food.  On my last fortress I had so much food (100 dwarfs, ~2000 prepared meals, ~8000 seeds, ~way more beer then can be reasonable) that I couldn't keep up with it, despite having a 20x30, 15x30, and 10x10 food piles, so I just turned off all my fields and allowed my farmers to help out by hauling all that food into barrels and bringing in the few hundred wood my legendary wood chopper had created.

-Edit-
Also, if your having trouble figuring the game out http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=31928.0 might well be worth looking at.

148
Thanks very much for that.  I already used the abandon/reclaim to figure out where it was, because I didn't realize the worlds where persistent and so I wouldn't be able to simply pick out the same area again to make a new go of it.

149
You let your dwarfs go outside?  There's your problem.

No dwarfs outside = no chance of ambush.  Just stick a bunch of traps at your entrance, then a lone war dog after the traps to catch any thieves and your invincible.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Late Game questions

It *is* possible to control what is encrusted and with what, it's just annoyingly difficult and time consuming. Basically you set stockpiles and a workshop in a room, lure the dwarf you want to do it inside, lock him in and give the production order. Or, forbid anything and everything else that he could use. As said, extremely aggravating.

Yeah, I think this is the one feature I'd most like to see in DF right now, is the ability to specify what your encrusting/adding images to/building blocks out of.  It'd be really nice to let my legendary mason build marble statues without having to turn off all other stone using projects so that precious marble isn't wasted in being turned into rings and crowns and other junk that I have 50+ bins of already.
