DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Which nobles should I always kill?
« on: April 03, 2009, 12:36:27 pm »
Just train him up, eh?

Why burn metal on him when I've already spent the absurd amount required to get my real smith up to legendary status?  I do admit I let him run the kennels, mostly because I can't spare any of my other 100+ dwarves that have actual work to do. (Moving all my flux next to my furnace for ease of mega steel works projects thanks to lava and literally hundreds of iron ore on a single level of my fortress.)

fairly sure only tame animals can go on chains.

Hmm, so it is possible to collapse an entire z-level?  I thought it would always have connections on that outer rim that you aren't allowed to mine, or does that not count for holding up the world?

And don't forget to entomb a noble inside it, otherwise it isn't a real pyramid.

Disclaimer: not responsible for the health of said noble after entombment, or his level of 'already dead' before entombment.

Once your weapon traps are forbidden, they will require unforbidding after a siege to clean out any paper goblin jams.  "PC LOAD ROCK?  What the @#$% does that mean?"  For instance, I'm on a map where I am at war with the Elves (spring invasions) so I do most of my housecleaning and siege prep in the winter and summer.  Each time you see "summer has arrived!" make sure to unforbid your traps for cleanup; each time you see "winter is upon you", re-forbid them to be certain they'll work.

You have to clean your traps to keep them working?  I mean I knew you had to resupply rock-fall and cage traps, but you have to do it for weapon traps too?  I've never noticed my traps not work because there are 2-3 dead goblins already sitting on them (goblins like playing hopscotch with my line of traps for some reason.)

There's no reason not to kill any noble really, only disadvantage is that a new one willl be coming along shortly. I dont generaly worry about my nobles unless they have mandates I can never fulfill (curse you crystal glass). In my current fortress Im planning on setting up a seperate area with rooms, a farm and watering hole to place all my guard/nobles in. The only non-noble they will have acsess to is a farmer. The rest of my population will be safe on the other side of the air lock :3

Agreed, no noble offers any sort of actual advantage (except maybe the mayor because he still works).  You could say the DM does, but honestly he starts with such low stats in everything that I tend to give my workshops to other dwarves to stop him messing up my legendary weapon/armor smith when making batches of steel equipment for my army.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Booze production issues.

Urist McBrewMaster cancels Brew Drink/R:  Too high off of booze fumes.

I wish, I keep running out of barrels.  I've only bough every barrel and bit of wood every caravan brings and clear cut my heavily forested map two or three times...

Also, glad I could be helpful.  Decided to figure that out after I kept running into my stockpile of food overflowing by huge amounts.

So, I'd suggest not producing coins in the future (Everyone will be completely honest in keeping track of how much money they have anyway), and that alone should reduce clutter and time wasted moving around coins by about 75%

Wouldn't having no coins reduce time wasted by moving them by, um, 100%? ;D

I meant reduce wasted time in the fortress overall by about 75% :P

For added fun, make all your coins either really cheap so their impossible to carry around, or really expensive so poor dwarves can't have any.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Question about wells and pumps.
« on: April 02, 2009, 08:08:12 pm »
With all these questions about your fortress, perhaps you should post a copy of it and/or saves, could help alot for people answering your questions.

Not sure off hand what the problem is with your pumps.

Not too sure about the second part of your question, but the rain won't mess up your magma moat.  Rain only forms into water in muddy pond tiles, so you don't need to worry about your moat turning into a roadway for the enemies.

I do know there are several threads and a wiki artical about what will and won't melt in magma (I think the wiki artical is called magma safe)

May not be an instant fix, but to help you out in the future, I've done some calculations, and found that if you plant and harvest 1 tile of brewable crop per season with a legendary grower (getting about 4-5 plants) you can liqueur and feed 2 dwarves (roughly).

So the numbers work out to about 2 plants per dwarf per season for booze.  So long as you can manage that you should have plenty of booze to keep everyone happy.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Just got a new Pc..

For comparison I have Intel core 2 duo 4400 @ 2.00GHz, and 2.00 GHz 2.00GB of RAM (If that makes sense, I suck at remembering how to find my computer's hardware.)

I can run a fortress with roughly 110 dwarves in a 4x4 area with a brook and bottom to open air magma pipe at about 30-45 FPS depending on how many dwarves are wandering around my exploratory tunnels (All 1 wide and tons of alternate routs, so lots of path blocking and recalculating)

Based on your stats I'd expect you could run about the same at 50-60 or so FPS, which is fairly good I think for that sized fortress.

Of course you could also run a somewhat smaller fortress, or one with fewer features, at the full 100FPS (Or more if you want to change the max FPS)

Edit: should note that I have a massive number of hauling jobs and am clear-cutting the entire area. (Roughly 60ish of my dwarves are on hauling jobs, maybe more)

Hmm, I know there is a wiki page that says what you can expect to do with different comps... let me go find it....

http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/System_requirements

At the bottom of that page.

Looks like you could run a regular sized fortress with all the bonus perks at a quite good rate.

The answer is obvious.  Armok took up smoking, and your fortress has been designated his ashtray.

The cabinet/chest thing is reasonably well known, however there have been alot of questions about what happens when rooms overlap a single container.  Even if all the stuff is laying in that one square, at least it still looks alot cleaner (Everyone was too lazy to actually test this and/or post results).

As to the coin thing... well first off why are you wasting time on coins?  Second, I think chests/other containers do have some kind of max holding limit (About equal to bins I think, so about 20ish items I think)

So, I'd suggest not producing coins in the future (Everyone will be completely honest in keeping track of how much money they have anyway), and that alone should reduce clutter and time wasted moving around coins by about 75%
