So, is it the presence of the HFS wall, or what you find IN a HFS that is the spoiler?

Yeah, gave them all shields.  But I thought I heard that armor stacks, so having them put on leather armor, then chain, then plate, you get all 3.

I got ambushed again, by about 4 goblins.  Still no siege.  Very boring.

Yeah, the hammer dwarves were legendary wrestlers.  I put on leather armor (still a bit reluctant to start making metal armors), but they still get a spine injury.

Meh, it's funnier to see them rip a goblin apart.

Yeah, I had a caged dragon, a whole goblin force including a elite bowmaster, who never broke out when transfered.  I even messed up, and the pit below was visible to the dwarves dumping the prisoners so they kept cancelling the job out of fear of naked, stripped goblins one level down.  I had to cancel the dump job, haul them back, build a floor over the hole, and ultimately decide to make the hole taller (nothing like laughing at broken legged goblins limping around!), then dumped them again.  They never broke out.

But the instant I cart about 6 gnome cages, they break out and cause havoc.

Cold hearted as I am, I just let the jerk die.  He'll never recover from a spine injury anyway.

No magma on this map (crazy, right?  NOT choosing your location other than making sure it has mountains and trees (maybe a river)?), so no go there.

As for sparring injuries, I might as well just forget about training hammerdwarves.  I haven't had a foe yet that couldn't be taken down by a few champion wrestlers (aside from one time a goblin bow lord one-shot them all), and no injuries from sparring.

DF Gameplay Questions / Dwarf dies for no reason

Ever have a dwarf just up and die on you?

1. I had one that "suffocated" and after searching my fort found him, dead, lying on his bed....  Maybe a murder? *cue ominous music*

2. What does "drowsy" mean?  Had a dwarf with little more than a spine injury in bed for a few years become "drowsy", then "very drowsy", before he eventually got up, dehydrated (dwarves were feeding and watering him before this), and wandered the halls until he died.  How can you get drowsy after being bed-ridden for 2 years?

Unrelated question:
3. How can I clean up the misc socks and cloaks littering my barracks?  They're all champs now, and with nothing better to do they just keep ripping the clothes off others

Last question:
4. My oh my, do my dwarves like giving each other spine injuries.  I've got 5 of my 15 military down for the count because of a spine problem.  Short of a massive construction project to move water from the brook in the opposite corner of the map to my fort to make a Kevorkian room, how can I dispose of them?

DF Gameplay Questions / Rules regarding caged enemies
« on: March 27, 2009, 08:56:16 am »
How exactly do the rules for caged hostiles work, when transporting them around?  Explanation follows:

For some reason, a horde of about 8 mountain gnomes decided to explore my dungeon.  They were scared of any dwarf that came by, but eventually the traffic died down enough that one by one they'd get caught in a cage trap.

Once in my animal stockpile, I thought I'd dump them into my pit, where my pet dragon is locked up (out of line of sight of anything flammable) so he could have a bit of fun.  The instant a dwarf arrived to cart it off to the pit they ALL broke out.  And this time, my dwarves were deathly scared of them, causing unbelievable amounts of "scared by mountain gnome" job cancellation messages, and even then my military weren't too worried about quick kills.

My question is, when caged goblins don't break out when ordered to be pitted, why did mountain gnomes?  Is it because the gnomes are "neutral" so my dwarves pulled them out rather than drag the cage itself?

I like to cage up my animals the instant they're born, as I don't like them wandering the halls, not only to reduce FPS, but also to optimize pathfinding.

Problem is, I can't get them to breed that way, so must let them out every few seasons to play in the front yard, so to speak.

I'd throw em all in a pit, but then how could I selectively slaughter specific animals without letting them all out, so I don't have to re-cage them (quick, in the case of cats) and re-dump them?

I have to heap praise on this as well.  I'd never known there was such a thing as this game, and now I want to help, if only to make this get developed faster.  But no amount of money I can throw Toady's way will make the work come faster.  Wish he'd hire me as a programmer... >.>

Only complaint I have with it is it's lack of explaining the save file system.  It was so infuriating, especially coming from his tutorial.   I assumed the "RegionX" folder was the original save file for the level, NOT the one that is replaced when "Save Game" is chosen.  I lost many a fortress when I quit for the day, tried to load the latest auto-save, and lost a whole season's work.  I restart out of frustration.

I will, howver, recommend that people refer to the wiki for most questions.  For some time, the WIKI and his tutorial were refered to all the time, but now only the wiki is needed.  But even then, I think I've read all I need from it (besides referring to the "stone" section to find out of chromite or lignite or limonite or... etc) is useful or not.  Needs to be a section in the wiki for "Usable to smelt/burn into coke" section"  "usable for crafts" section, and a "usable for construction" section.

I'm having this too.  After the last sneak attack (90% of my sieges have been sneaks, it's a PITA), I haven't gotten attacked.  Things are getting a little dull, might make a new fort (crappy materials, no underground ANYTHING).

Might have been caused by my guard dragon.  He set some goblins on fire who promptly left the map.  Maybe they returned home, set a stolen beer stash on fire, and blew themselves up?

You will need the Dungeon master to tame the dragon...
But please, do so
tame dragons are LOTS of fun hehe

Yeah, tamed him.  Chained him up near the lake that is near my gate.

In a goblin ambush, he set them all on fire, who then proceeded to leave the area.  Very neat and large area of effect, but fairly non-lethal (at least, it's a slow death, not as quick as I'd like.)

Maybe I'll just chain him in my murder pit.

Put the cage in her house and have it hooked up to a lever.

Oh! Oh! give her only Animal Caretaking and start spiking or dumping cats so she'll have something to do.

Hmm, since cats always land on their feet, can a cat have injuries anywhere other than on their feet?
